The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) certifies a suite of Standard Reference Materials (SRMs) to be used to evaluate specific aspects of the instrument performance of both X-ray and neutron powder diffractometers. This report describes SRM 640f, the seventh generation of this powder diffraction SRM, which is designed to be used primarily for calibrating powder diffractometers with respect to line position; it also can be used for the determination of the instrument profile function. It is certified with respect to the lattice parameter and consists of approximately 7.5 g of silicon powder prepared to minimize line broadening. A NIST-built diffractometer, incorporating many advanced design features, was used to certify the lattice parameter of the Si powder. Both statistical and systematic uncertainties have been assigned to yield a certified value for the lattice parameter at 22.5 °C of a = 0.5431144 ± 0.000008 nm.

The application of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) for the detection and quantification of low levels of a solid-state chemical impurity, BrettPhos oxide, in an active pharmaceutical ingredient is discussed. It is demonstrated that with appropriate methodology and experimentation, the impurity levels of as low as 0.07% w/w could be detected reliably and limit of quantification of 0.10% w/w could be achieved by PXRD, using a laboratory X-ray source. Method development, validation, and benchmarking using conventional high-performance liquid chromatography are presented in the manuscript highlighting the robustness and reproducibility of such measurements.

A total pattern analysis suite of programs has been developed and incorporated into the ICDD® PDF-4 database. While the suite of programs is intended for the analysis of any diffraction pattern, particular attention was focused on the analysis of common amorphous, non-crystalline, or partially crystalline materials found in minerals, polymers, and pharmaceuticals. The suite of programs directly interfaces to the ICDD database and libraries of non-crystalline references.

Although the concept, first demonstration, and potential applications of X-ray transmission mirrors (XTMs) were initially described over 30 years ago, only a few implementations exist in the literature. This is attributed to the unsolved challenge of a thick frame supporting a thin, reflecting membrane which does not itself block the transmitted beam. Here, we introduce a novel approach to solve this problem by employing silicon microfabrication. A robust XTM frame has been fabricated by using a novel two-step etch process, which secures the thin-film membrane without blocking the transmitted beam. Specifically, we have fabricated delicate XTM optics with 90% yield, which consist of 280-nm-thick low-stress silicon nitride membrane windows that are 1.5 mm wide and 125 mm long on silicon substrates. The XTM optics have been demonstrated to be a more efficient high-pass X-ray filter; for example, when configured for 40% transmission of 11.3 keV photons, we measure the reduction of 8.4 keV photons by a factor of 56.

The I13 transmission X-ray microscope at Diamond Light Source (DLS) has been designed to cover a broad range of energies and field of views. The beamline operates on an undulator source, and a multilayer monochromator can be used to work at a larger bandwidth to enable faster acquisitions. The experimental design includes large working distances for the optics to allow installing in situ sample environments. This paper presents the current state of the experimental system and shows some of the latest results.

Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) and its doped analogues Li4Ti4.95M0.05O12 (M = Al3+, Co3+, Ni2+, and Mg2+) were synthesized and characterized using in situ PXRD to monitor the phase transitions during the sol–gel synthesis of the spinel material. These results are complimented by thermogravimetric analysis, which illustrates the decomposition of the materials synthesized, where the final LTO products are seen to form at approximately 550 °C. The material has an amorphous structure from room temperature, coupled with a crystalline phase which is speculated to be H2Ti2O5·H2O. This crystalline phase disappears at 250 °C, with the material still in the amorphous state. The crystalline LTO phase starts at approximately 550 °C, with anatase co-crystallizing with the spinel phase. Rutile appears at 600 °C and co-crystallizes with the final product at 850 °C, where anatase is no longer seen. The rutile impurity remains present after cooling the material to room temperature, and results indicate that prolonged heating at 850 °C is required to reduce the rutile content. Rietveld refinement of diffraction patterns show that the unit-cell parameter increases with increasing temperature, coupled with a decrease when cooling the sample. The crystallite sizes follow the same trend, with a significant increase above temperatures of 750 °C.

Laboratory X-ray powder diffraction was used to solve and refine the crystal structures of appended guest molecules within the pores of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Herein, we report the crystal structure of 1-propanethiol adsorbed in the pores of Co2(dobdc) (dobdc4– = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, MOF-74). Soaking the activated MOF in neat 1-propanethiol resulted in the formation of 1-propanethiol–Co2(dobdc). The thiol appendant MOF maintained the crystal symmetry, with a rhombohedral space group R-3 and unit-cell parameters a = 25.9597(9) Å, c = 6.8623(5) Å, and V = 4005.0(4) Å3. As expected, the thiol sulfur formed a bond with the open cobalt metal site. The alkane chain was directed toward the center of the pore, participating in numerous van der Waals weak interactions with neighboring molecules. For the final Rietveld refinement, soft restrains were applied using bond distances obtained by periodic density functional theory (DFT) geometry optimization.

Residual strain in electrodeposited Li films may affect safety and performance in Li metal battery anodes, so it is important to understand how to detect residual strain in electrodeposited Li and the conditions under which it arises. To explore this Li films, electrodeposited onto Cu metal substrates, were prepared under an applied pressure of either 10 or 1000 kPa and subsequently tested for the presence or absence of residual strain via sin2(ψ) analysis. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of Li films required preparation and examination within an inert environment; hence, a Be-dome sample holder was employed during XRD characterization. Results show that the Li film grown under 1000 kPa displayed a detectable presence of in-plane compressive strain (−0.066%), whereas the Li film grown under 10 kPa displayed no detectable in-plane strain. The underlying Cu substrate revealed an in-plane residual strain near zero. Texture analysis via pole figure determination was also performed for both Li and Cu and revealed a mild fiber texture for Li metal and a strong bi-axial texture of the Cu substrate. Experimental details concerning sample preparation, alignment, and analysis of the particularly air-sensitive Li films have also been detailed. This work shows that Li metal exhibits residual strain when electrodeposited under compressive stress and that XRD can be used to quantify that strain.

This paper describes a new flow-through capillary sample holder that allows the in situ study of re-solvation processes. The holder can be aligned to the goniometer's center using two perpendicular micrometric tables that move in y and z directions. The re-solvation of two ibrutinib solvates of anisole and fluorobenzene was tested using the holder to show the practical application of this technique.

A deconvolutional method for preprocessing powder diffraction data has been improved. The cumulants of instrumental aberration functions of Bragg-Brentano (Parrish) diffractometer calculated up to the fourth order are presented. The treatments of axial-divergence aberration and the effective spectroscopic profile of the source X-ray have been simplified from those used in previous methods. The current method has been applied to powder diffraction data collected with a Cu-target X-ray tube, used over 20 years, and a Ni-foil Kβ filter.

Particulate matter (PM) specimens from a traffic site were sampled on Teflon filters using a low volume sampler. The sampling campaign ran over a one-year period with sampling frequency of twice a week for both PM2.5 and PM10. X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods, which are not commonly used in PM analysis, have been utilized successfully to identify crystalline phases present, including secondary pollutants. XRD data confirmed results obtained by X-ray fluorescence, positive matrix factorization modeling, and scanning electron microscopy. PM2.5 consisted mainly of secondary sulfates, like Mascagnite [(NH4)2SO4], Koktaite [(NH4)2Ca(SO4)2·H2O], and Gypsum [CaSO4·2H2O]. For PM10, it was found that the major phases are mostly originating from natural sources, such as dust storms and sea salts, in addition to secondary compounds, such as sodium nitrate. The main phases identified were Calcite, Quartz, Gypsum, Halite, and Palygorskite.

The giant gypsum crystals of Naica cave have fascinated scientists since their discovery in 2000. Human activity has changed the microclimate inside the cave, making scientists wonder about the potential environmental impact on the crystals. Over the last 9 years, we have studied approximately 70 samples. This paper reports on the detailed chemical–structural characterization of the impurities present at the surface of these crystals and the experimental simulations of their potential deterioration patterns. Selected samples were studied by petrography, optical and electronic microscopy, and laboratory X-ray diffraction. 2D grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, X-ray μ-fluorescence, and X-ray μ-absorption near-edge structure were used to identify the impurities and their associated phases. These impurities were deposited during the latest stage of the gypsum crystal formation and have afterward evolved with the natural high humidity. The simulations of the behavior of the crystals in microclimatic chambers produced crystal dissolution by 1–4% weight fraction under high CO2 concentration and permanent fog, and gypsum phase dehydration under air and CO2 gaseous environment. Our work suggests that most surface impurities are of natural origin; the most significant anthropogenic damage on the crystals is the extraction of water from the caves.

Ag3O was synthesized by jet-milling magnetron-sputtered Ag–Ag2O thin films. Heating the jet-milled powders in air and N2 from 40 to 148 °C at ambient pressure produced Ag3O-rich powders. The phase composition and unit-cell parameters of the jet-milled powders were measured as a function of temperature with in situ X-ray powder diffraction experiments from −186 to 293 °C. Ag3O was also produced by ball milling and sonicating jet-milled films at ambient conditions. The phase composition, unit-cell parameters, and thermal-reaction rates indicate nonstoichiometric Ag3O was produced from the reaction of metastable, nonstoichiometric Ag2O (cuprite structure) and ccp Ag. The thermal expansion of Ag3O is anisotropic; below 25 °C, the a-axis expansion is about twice the c-axis expansion resulting in a negative slope of c/a(T). The reversal of the sign of c/a(T) near 25 °C is dramatic. The thermal reaction is arrested when the temperature is rapidly increased from ambient to 130 °C. Ag3O is metastable and decreases its unit-cell volume during kinetic decomposition to Ag when heated above ambient temperature in air and nitrogen. The relative volume expansion of Ag3O is about 80% less than Ag at room temperature and below. The suite of nonstoichiometric Ag3O produced by heating displays a linear relation between c/a and unit-cell volume at room temperature. The c/a and unit-cell volume of a hydrothermally grown Ag3O single crystal reported in a published structure determination was the Ag-rich, low-volume end member of the linear series. The c/a and unit-cell volume are sensitive indicators of the oxygen content and state of disorder.

In this paper, grandite core with Grs64±1Adr36±1Sps2 composition was crystallographically studied. This core represents zone A of the macroscopically visible five A–E zones of the optically anisotropic Grs58–64Adr36–42Sps2 grandite. The applied procedure includes the detailed analysis of the powder diffraction patterns, and the Rietveld refinements of the crystal structures in a series of 18 space groups and two mixtures, which were followed by the comparative analysis of the R-values, site occupancy factors, and the bond lengths and angles. Synthesis of all of the presented results allows us to undoubtedly conclude that studied grandite is not cubic, neither as monophase nor as multiple phases in a mixture. Namely, it was established that structural dissymmetrization occurred and that it crystallized in the disordered rhombohedral $R\bar{3}c$ or orthorhombic Fddd space groups, whereby the first one is more probable. Beside the established lower symmetry of the studied grandite, which could be treated as the primary cause, the residual strain is also not excluded as the second possible cause for its slight optical anisotropy.
