Water and paraffinic oils were used to determine variables that affect positive displacement pumps used to meter liquid flow in an air-assist spray system. Components needed to construct an air-assist spray system were described for use in spray chambers and on a tractor for field application of herbicides in ultralow volume (ULV). The flow rate of the pump varied less than 2% for the water and oil as the pump setting was varied from 0 to 100% of the pump's capacity. Linear relationships were shown for both liquids as the voltage input varied from 4 to 13 volts. Air pressures to 100 kPa and liquid temperatures to 35 C did not affect flow rate of the pump. Volume median diameter of the spray droplets decreased from 295 μm to 77 μm and 159 μm to 85 μm for water and paraffinic oil, respectively, as the air pressure was adjusted from 14 to 110 kPa.

Annual wormwood has been cultivated on a small scale for production of the artemisinin class of antimalarial drugs in sufficient quantities for preclinical and clinical trials. Large scale cultivation will require a reliable, efficient crop production system. Production systems using 32 herbicides alone or in combinations were evaluated in growth chamber, greenhouse, and field experiments at Stoneville, MS from 1985 through 1988. The herbicide treatments that provided the best weed control were (A) metolachlor at 2.2 kg ai ha-1 preemergence (PRE), (B) chloramben at 2.2 kg ai ha-1 (PRE), or (C) trifluralin at 0.6 kg ai ha-1 preplant soil incorporated (PPI) followed by fluazifop at 0.2 + 0.2 kg ai ha-1 postemergence broadcast (POST) and acifluorfen at 0.6 kg ai ha-1 (POST). These herbicide production systems provided excellent weed control (≥85%) and minimal crop injury (≤10%) with no effect on crop height or weight at harvest. Production of artemisinin was not reduced by herbicide treatments A, B, and C in 1987 and treatments B and C in 1988 when compared with the hand-weeded plots.

Field experiments were conducted in 1986 and 1987 to determine the efficacy of various herbicides applied in the spring or fall for redvine population reductions. Spring applications of dicamba and picloram reduced redvine populations 4 mo after application. These treatments also reduced soybean density. A sequential spring followed by fall application of dicamba reduced redvine stem counts 32 to 45% the following year. Spring or spring followed by fall applications of clopyralid and hexazinone were not effective in reducing redvine populations. A fall application of clopyralid, dicamba, Dowco 433, glyphosate, or imazapyr reduced redvine regrowth 78 to 97% the following year. Dicamba at 2.2 kg ae ha-1, 3.4 kg ae ha-1 glyphosate, and 0.28 kg ai ha-1 imazapyr increased soybean yield the following year because of reduced redvine competition and lack of herbicide injury. Redvine populations were unaffected by fall applications of fosamine, hexazinone, and picloram, or clomazone applied in the spring or in the fall followed by a sequential spring application. A sequential spring followed by fall treatment of 1.1 + 1.1 kg ha-1 dicamba or 0.14 + 0.14 kg ae ha-1 clopyralid reduced trumpetcreeper population 49 to 58% the following year.

Field studies were conducted in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to explore interactions among DPX-V9360 herbicide applied postemergence, terbufos insecticide applied as an in-furrow treatment, and the environment. Field corn (‘Pioneer 3751’) and sweet corn (‘Jubilee’) were planted with and without an in-furrow application of terbufos. DPX-V9360 was applied postemergence when the corn was in the 4- to 6-leaf stage at 0, 35, 70, 140, and 280 g ai ha-1 with nonionic surfactant and 28% N fertilizer solution. Crop response to DPX-V9360 was similar at all three locations, varying only in magnitude of injury. Crop injury was greater with Jubilee sweet corn than with Pioneer 3751 field corn. Injury to both hybrids increased as DPX-V9360 application rate increased. Application of terbufos increased injury from DPX-V9360 to both hybrids. Significant yield reduction did not occur with either hybrid when DPX-V9360 was applied at rates of 140 g ha-1 or less and no terbufos was applied.

Weed control is a limiting factor for adoption of conservation tillage systems on the Texas Southern High Plains. A field study was established to evaluate Palmer amaranth control with strip-tillage dinitroaniline herbicide incorporation in wheat residue. Preemergence herbicides were applied alone and in combination with strip-tilled incorporated herbicides. Significant cotton injury or stand reductions were not observed with any treatment. Effective (>80%) early season Palmer amaranth control was achieved with trifluralin or pendimethalin in conjunction with preemergence herbicides. Preemergence herbicides alone did not provide adequate control.

Experiments were conducted from 1987 through 1989 to determine the most effective and consistent control of velvetleaf in cotton with soil-applied herbicides. Norflurazon was applied at 1.1 or 1.7 kg ha-1 either preplant (PPI) or preemergence (PRE) or by splitting these rates and applying half PPI and the other half PRE. All methods of norflurazon application were compared with and without a PRE application of diuron at 1.1 kg ha-1. The most consistent control was achieved with PPI norflurazon at either 1.1 or 1.7 kg ha-1 followed by diuron. In 1988, crop injury at 2 wk varied and was 29% or greater for preemergence norflurazon tank-mixed with diuron.

Temporal changes in factors that contribute to the competitiveness of Florida beggarweed in peanuts were studied in 1986 and 1987. Florida beggarweed leaves were unifoliolate to the ninth node and trifoliolate thereafter. Peanuts grew taller than Florida beggarweed until the R-3 stage of peanuts, after which Florida beggarweed height increased logarithmically. Florida beggarweed branching was suppressed by the peanut canopy until the weed overtopped the peanuts. Florida beggarweed dry weight was reduced 80% by peanuts compared with Florida beggarweed grown alone. Peanuts reduced Florida beggarweed leaf area and canopy area. Percent light attenuation as a function of Florida beggarweed canopy area was described by the equation Y = lnX/25.5. Peanut yields in 60 cm of row on either side of a single Florida beggarweed plant were reduced 19%.

Preplant-incorporated (PPI) herbicides were applied to suppress annual weeds in new seedings of alfalfa, then additional annual weed control and crop tolerance from selected bentazon treatments were evaluated. Bentazon applied at 0.8 kg ai ha-1 without an adjuvant caused an average of 8% visual injury to newly seeded alfalfa but did not reduce first-harvest alfalfa yields. Bentazon improved common lambsquarters control in newly seeded alfalfa and reduced weed biomass in first-harvest forage. No significant difference in crop injury, weed control, alfalfa yield, or weed yield was observed when bentazon was applied at 0.6, 0.8, or 1.1 kg ha-1. Greater alfalfa injury occurred when bentazon was applied with 1.25% v/v oil-emulsifier mixture, than when applied alone or with 5% v/v 28% liquid nitrogen fertilizer (28% N). Ten alfalfa cultivars did not differ in sensitivity to bentazon applied early postemergence (POST) or POST.

Field research was conducted at Fargo, Langdon, and Prosper, ND to determine carryover of clopyralid applied at 70 to 560 g ae ha-1 in soil as indicated by response of crops planted 1 yr after application. Flax, potato, and safflower growth at Fargo were not affected by clopyralid residues. At Fargo, soybean height, stand, and yield were reduced by residues from clopyralid at 560 g ha-1, and sunflower heads ha-1 and yield were reduced by residues from clopyralid at 280 and 560 g ha-1 and 560 g ha-1, respectively. Potato and sunflower at Langdon and Prosper and lentil at Langdon were not affected by clopyralid residues. Soybean yield at Prosper was not affected by clopyralid residues, but plant height was reduced by residues from clopyralid at 280 and 560 g ha-1. These results indicate that residues from clopyralid applied at labeled cropland rates, of 280 g ha-1 or less, in silty clay, clay loam, and silty clay loam soils in North Dakota probably will not adversely affect the dicot crops tested in these experiments planted 11 mo or more after application.

Field experiments were established to investigate the influence of terbufos on the response of five corn hybrids to postemergence applications of CGA-136872. In 1987, Asgrow RX404, Dekalb DK656, Funk's G4673A, and Pioneer P3165 were tolerant to CGA-136872 when no soil insecticides were applied. In 1988, terbufos was applied at 1.1 kg ai ha-1 in-furrow at planting. Injury was observed on all hybrids following CGA-136872 application in 1988. With the exception of Funk's G4307, all hybrids were tolerant to CGA-136872 in 1989 when no soil insecticide was used. When terbufos was applied in-furrow, injury increased with increasing herbicide rate for these hybrids.

In 1982 and 1983, effects of soybean row spacing and irrigation on weed resurgence following postemergence herbicide applications were evaluated. Also, ‘Forrest’ and ‘Ransom’ cultivar effects and early and late planting date influences on weed resurgence were evaluated in 1982 and 1983, respectively. In both years, as row spacing increased, weed resurgence increased. Photosynthetically active radiation measurements indicated the amount of weed resurgence coincided closely with the differing amounts of light penetrating to the soil surface. Irrigation, planting date, and cultivars showed no significant effect on weed resurgence. In 1982, a significant cultivar by row spacing interaction was obtained. In 1983, the late planting date showed a trend for less weed resurgence under irrigated conditions, although the difference was not significant. Soybean canopy measurements indicated development was greater under irrigation.

Bentgrass was used to bioassay oxyfluorfen in leaching experiments done in columns of soilless potting media and soils, with herbicide incorporated into the upper 2 to 4 cm. Depth of herbicide leaching increased in order in the following soils: peat and sand (1:1) mix, Stockton clay soil, Yolo fine sandy loam soil, and redwood bark and sand (3:1) mix. Depth of leaching was not related to soil organic matter content. Equilibration experiments showed that peat adsorbed 4 to 5 times more oxyfluorfen than redwood bark. Less leaching was observed in potting mixtures containing peat than bark. Raising the oxyfluorfen dose from 20 to 200 ppmw increased the depth of leaching and concentration of herbicide in the leachate, while a 10-fold increase in water volume had only a limited effect. Twenty ppmw of oxyfluorfen incorporated in the top of a peat-containing potting medium has a low risk of leaching out of the container.

Experiments were conducted over 2 yr and at two locations in Central Georgia to determine the influence of paraquat applied for weed control in the spring and following first harvest on alfalfa yield and crown carbohydrate content. Paraquat at 0.28 and 0.56 kg ai ha-1 controlled most annual cool-season weeds at 20 d after March treatment. These rates controlled annual warm-season weeds when applied as early as 7 d after first harvest. Treatments applied during March and as late as 7 d after first harvest did not influence alfalfa production or crown carbohydrate content. However, paraquat applied 14 d after first harvest reduced alfalfa yield 40% and significantly decreased crown carbohydrate content at second harvest but the alfalfa had fully recovered by the third harvest. This indicates that alfalfa is resilient to chemical defoliation by paraquat applied for weed control.

Several precision postemergence-directed sprayers with different nozzle designs and arrangements were evaluated for potential use in sweet corn for wild-proso millet (PANMI) control in field trials from 1987 to 1989. Ametryn at 2270 g ha-1 plus oil-emulsifier mixture (OEM) at 1.3% v/v and sethoxydim alone or plus OEM applied postemergence-directed selectively controlled PANMI in sweet corn. Sethoxydim at 220 g ha-1 plus OEM controlled PANMI best when averaged over the 3-yr period. Ametryn plus OEM did not injure corn and sethoxydim at 110 g ha-1 plus OEM caused little or no corn injury and no yield reductions when applied with any of the sprayers. Generally, only sethoxydim at 220 g ha-1 plus OEM injured corn. The amount of injury was different among sprayers, with the nozzle designs and arrangements responsible for corn injury. Injury was minimized when sethoxydim was applied with a sprayer equipped with 150 degree dual orifice nozzles spaced 38 cm apart and mounted on skids that contacted the soil to assure constant nozzle height. This sprayer, or sprayers of similar nozzle design, show the most potential for use by sweet corn growers.

Tebuthiuron has been found in soils and plants a decade after application to rangelands in semi-arid areas. Forage production, length of growing season, and preference by grazing animals are greater on treated than on untreated areas. It is not understood how these differences occur. Blue grama forage was assayed for concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Zn in treated and untreated plants on adjacent paired plots in the field, 6 to 11 yr after tebuthiuron applications at three locations in Arizona. Only Fe and Mn concentration differed among treatments, being significantly higher (P = 0.05) in blue grama from treated plots.

Experiments were conducted in 1988 and 1989 at four sites in Virginia to test weed control efficacy in double-crop, no-till soybean production systems with reduced rates of nonselective herbicides. Chlorimuron plus linuron at 0.04 plus 0.46 kg ha-1 gave more than 94% control of five weed species, but only 81 to 86% control of three weed species. Tank mix additions of reduced rates of either glyphosate, HOE-0661 or paraquat to the chlorimuron plus linuron treatment increased large crabgrass and common ragweed control.

The effects of 1.24 kg ha-1 ammonium sulfate, 5 g ae ha-1 of the isopropylamine salt of imazapyr, and air temperature of 18, 27, and 35 C at 40 and 100% relative humidity on the phytotoxicity of 35 g ae ha-1 of the ammonium salt of imazethapyr applied postemergence to pitted morningglory were evaluated. Both ammonium sulfate and imazapyr increased imazethapyr phytotoxicity to pitted morningglory. Ammonium sulfate enhanced imazethapyr phytotoxicity the most at 40% whereas imazapyr was most effective at 100% relative humidity. Imazethapyr phytotoxicity was enhanced more by the combination of ammonium sulfate and imazapyr than with either alone regardless of relative humidity. Variations in temperature had little effect on phytotoxicity.

Three experiments evaluated sicklepod interference with soybean with and without preplant incorporated applications of chlorimuron plus metribuzin or imazaquin. Sicklepod density, weed-free period, and weedy period were examined. In the absence of herbicides, soybean seed yield was reduced with 2 sicklepod plants row m-1, whereas 8 plants row m-1 were necessary to reduce yield when herbicides were used. Herbicide use also increased soybean yield at higher sicklepod densities. Chlorimuron plus metribuzin reduced sicklepod dry matter at 8 plants row m-1. To maintain soybean yield, a weed-free period of 4 wk after emergence was required, regardless of treatment. Both herbicide treatments resulted in increased soybean yield at the zero and two wk weed-free periods; however, they did not affect soybean yield when the weed-free period was 4 wk or more. Imazaquin reduced sicklepod density when plots were left weedy full-season, and further reductions were noted with chlorimuron plus metribuzin. A sicklepod weedy interval of 8 wk reduced soybean yield when untreated, but either herbicide treatment extended that interval to 16 wk.

Suspected triazine resistant Pennsylvania smartweed plants were discovered near Holy Cross, Dubuque County, IA. Subsequent variable chlorophyll a fluorescence assays confirmed these selections to be triazine resistant. This is the first reported evidence of s-triazine resistance in Pennsylvania smartweed.

Eleven herbicides applied in May, were evaluated for yankeeweed control in East-Central Texas. Yankeeweed cover 1 yr later was reduced to 5% or less by 0.28 kg ha-1 of picloram; 0.56 kg ha-1 of clopyralid, glyphosate, or dicamba; 0.28 + 0.84 kg ha-1 of dicamba + 2,4-D, and 1.1 kg ha-1 triclopyr compared with 30% cover in the untreated area. Chlorsulfuron and metsulfuron at 0.07 kg ha-1 reduced yankeeweed cover to 12 and 7%, respectively. Dalapon, 2,4-D, and tebuthiuron were relatively ineffective. Most herbicides, reduced woolly croton cover within 1 mo after treatment compared to the untreated areas, but 2,4-D at 0.28 kg ha-1 and chlorsulfuron at 0.02 kg ha-1 and 0.07 kg ha-1 were most effective after 4 mo. All herbicides, except dalapon at 1.1 kg ha-1 or less and most rates of 2,4-D and tebuthiuron, reduced partridgepea cover during the year of application. Total grass cover was increased 4 and 12 mo following treatment with clopyralid, picloram, dicamba, and triclopyr. On separate sites, bahiagrass and coastal bermudagrass accounted for most of the increased grass cover.
