For a family of semigroups Sε(t) : ℌε → ℌε depending on a perturbation parameter ε ∈ [0, 1], where the perturbation is allowed to become singular at ε = 0, we establish a general theorem on the existence of exponential attractors εε satisfying a suitable Hölder continuity property with respect to the symmetric Hausdorff distance at every ε ∈ [0, 1]. The strong* topology s*(X) of a Banach space X is defined as the locally convex topology generated by the seminorms x ↦ ‖Sx‖ for bounded linear maps S from X into Hilbert spaces. The w-right topology for X, ρ(X), is a stronger locally convex topology, which may be analogously characterized by taking reflexive Banach spaces in place of Hilbert spaces. For any Banach space Y , a linear map T : X → Y is known to be weakly compact precisely when T is continuous from the w-right topology to the norm topology of Y. The main results deal with conditions for, and consequences of, the coincidence of these two topologies on norm bounded sets. A large class of Banach spaces, including all C*-algebras and, more generally, all JB*-triples, exhibit this behaviour.

This paper deals with the large-time behaviour of solutions to the exterior problem of the non-Newtonian filtration equation with first-order term and nonlinear boundary source. In particular, the critical global exponent and the critical Fujita exponent are determined or estimated. An interesting phenomenon is shown: there exists a threshold value for the coefficient of the first-order term such that the critical global exponent is strictly less than the critical Fujita exponent when the coefficient is under this threshold, while these two exponents are identically equal when the coefficient is over this value.

Dirichlet–Neumann operators arise in many applications in the sciences, and this has inspired a number of studies on their analytical properties. In this paper we further investigate the analyticity properties of Dirichlet–Neumann operators as functions of the boundary shape. In particular, we study the size of the disc of convergence of their Taylor-series representation. For this we use a complexification technique which requires a novel reformulation of the problem, coupled with methods for systems of elliptic partial differential equations. Numerical results to illustrate our theoretical conclusions are presented.

We consider weak solutions of parabolic systems of the type

This paper is concerned with the dynamics of a non-local delayed reaction–diffusion equation without quasi-monotonicity on an infinite n-dimensional domain, which can be derived from the growth of a stage-structured single-species population. We first prove that solutions of the Cauchy-type problem are positively preserving and bounded if the initial value is non-negative and bounded. Then, by establishing a comparison theorem and a series of comparison arguments, we prove the global attractivity of the positive equilibrium. When there exist no positive equilibria, we prove that the zero equilibrium is globally attractive. In particular, these results are still valid for the non-local delayed reaction–diffusion equation on a bounded domain with the Neumann boundary condition. Finally, we establish the existence of new entire solutions by using the travelling-wave solutions of two auxiliary equations and the global attractivity of the positive equilibrium.

This paper is devoted to the study of Nicholson's blowflies equation with diffusion: a kind of time-delayed reaction diffusion. For any travelling wavefront with speed c > c* (c* is the minimum wave speed), we prove that the wavefront is time-asymptotically stable when the delay-time is sufficiently small, and the initial perturbation around the wavefront decays to zero exponentially in space as x → −∞, but it can be large in other locations. The result develops and improves the previous wave stability obtained by Mei et al. in 2004. The new approach developed in this paper is the comparison principle combined with the technical weighted-energy method. Numerical simulations are also carried out to confirm our theoretical results.

In general, population systems are often subject to environmental noise. To examine whether the presence of such noise affects these systems significantly, we perturb the functional Kolmogorov-type system

into the stochastic functional differential equation

We show that different environmental noise structures have different effects on the population system with unbounded delay. Under two classes of different environmental noise perturbations, we establish existence theorems of the global positive solution to the unbounded delay stochastic functional Kolmogorov-type system. As the desired results for population dynamics, we also examine asymptotic boundedness, including the moment boundedness, stochastically ultimate boundedness and the moment average boundedness in time. To illustrate our idea more clearly, as a special case we also discuss a Lotka–Volterra system with unbounded delay.

We introduce the concept of quasi-completely continuous multilinear operators and use this concept to characterize, for a wide class of Banach spaces X1, …, Xk, the multilinear operators T : X1 × … × Xk → X with an X-valued Aron–Berner extension.

AC rings (rings satisfying Auslander's condition) have recently been studied by Christensen and Holm, among others. We will employ tilting theory to study Auslander's condition. In particular, we prove that the class of AC Artin algebras is closed under tilting equivalences.

We study the existence of a positive solution of a p-superlinear equation involving the p-Laplacian operator. The main difficulty here is that the nonlinearity considered does not necessarily verify the well-known Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz condition. As an application, by performing an adequate change of variables we obtain an existence result of a quasilinear equation depending on the gradient.

In feedback stabilization studies, a control scheme is designed so that the ‘state’ of the system decays with a designated rate as t → ∞. Thus, any linear functional of the state also decays with at least the same decay rate. We study a class of linear parabolic systems, and show the existence of a feedback control scheme with a specific property such that some non-trivial linear functionals decay faster than the state. In constructing the control scheme, we also solve the new problem of an arbitrary allocation of the eigenvalues of some coefficient matrix which is subject to constraint, and give the necessary and sufficient condition in terms of controllability and observabililty assumptions. This is an essential extension of the celebrated 1967 theory of pole allocation by W. M. Wonham.

Geometric Langlands duality relates a representation of a simple Lie group Gv to the cohomology of a certain moduli space associated with the dual group G. In this correspondence, a principal SL2 subgroup of Gv makes an unexpected appearance. This can be explained using gauge theory, as this paper will show, with the help of the equations of Nahm and Bogomolny.

We study orthogonal projections of embedded surfaces M in H3+ (−1) along horocycles to planes. The singularities of the projections capture the extrinsic geometry of M related to the lightcone Gauss map. We give geometric characterizations of these singularities and prove a Koenderink-type theorem that relates the hyperbolic curvature of the surface to the curvature of the profile and of the normal section of the surface. We also prove duality results concerning the bifurcation set of the family of projections.

The Grunsky map is known to be holomorphic on the universal Teichmüller space. In this paper it is proved that the Grunsky map induces a holomorphic map on the asymptotic Teichmüller space. The Caratháodory and Kobayashi metrics on the asymptotic Teichmüller space are studied as applications.

We characterize the boundedness of the Hardy operator between weighted amalgams, a problem studied, but not completely solved, by C. Carton-Lebrun, H. P. Heinig and S. C. Hofmann. We also characterize the weighted weak-type inequalities for modified Hardy operators on amalgams.

We investigate a non-cooperative reaction-diffusion model arising in the theory of nuclear reactors and are concerned with the associated steady-state problem. We determine the asymptotic behaviour of the coexistence states near the point of bifurcation from infinity, which exhibits the following very interesting spatial blow-up pattern: when the fuel temperature reaches a certain value, the free fast neutrons undergoing nuclear reaction will blow up in each spatial point of the interior of the reactor. Without any restriction on spatial dimensions, we also discuss the uniqueness and stability of the coexistence states. Our results complement and sharpen those derived in two recent works by Arioli and Lóopez-Gómez.

This paper investigates the existence of solutions for boundary variational–hemivariational inequalities of elliptic type at resonance as well as at non-resonance. Using the notion of the generalized gradient of Clarke and the property of the first eigenfunction, we also build a Landesman–Lazer theory in the non-smooth framework of variational–hemivariational inequalities of elliptic type.
