This paper studies the long-time behaviour of solutions to a one-dimensional strongly nonlinear partial differential equation system arising from phase transitions with microscopic movements. Our system features a strongly nonlinear internal energy balance equation. Uniform bounds of the global solutions and the compactness of the orbit are obtained for the first time using a lemma established recently by Jiang. The existence of global attractors and convergence of global solutions to a single steady state as time goes to infinity are also proved.

The abstract version of Struwe's monotonicity trick developed by Jeanjean and Toland for functionals depending on a real parameter is strengthened in the sense that it provides, for almost every value of the parameter, the existence of a bounded almost symmetric Palais–Smale sequence at the mountain-pass level whenever a mild symmetry assumption is set on the energy functional. In addition, the whole theory is extended to the case of continuous functionals on Banach spaces, in the framework of non-smooth critical point theory.

We show that if ξm+2/N /(−log ξ)β = O(f(ξ)) as ξ ↓ 0 for some 0 < β < 2/(mN + 2), one of the following holds: (i) all non-trivial solutions blow up in finite time; (ii) every non-trivial solution with an initial datum u0 having compact support exists globally in time and grows up to ∞ as t → ∞: limtt→∞ inf|x|<Ru(x, t) = ∞ for any R > 0. Moreover, we give a condition on f such that (i) holds, and show the existence of f such that (ii) holds.

We introduce the full expression of the curvature tensor of a real hypersurface M in complex two-plane Grassmannians G2(ℂm+2) from the Gauss equation. We then derive a new formula for the Ricci tensor of M in G2(ℂm+2). Finally, we prove that there does not exist any Hopf real hypersurface in complex two-plane Grassmannians G2(ℂm+2) with parallel Ricci tensor.

Let λ* > 0 denote the largest possible value of λ such that the system

has a solution, where is the unit ball in ℝn centred at the origin, p > 1 and n is the exterior unit normal vector. We show that for λ = λ* this problem possesses a unique weak solution u*, called the extremal solution. We prove that u* is singular when n ≥ 13 for p large enough and actually solve part of the open problem which Dávila et al. left unsolved.

This paper deals with the blow-up of solutions to a class of parabolic problems with time-dependent coefficients under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. For one set of problems in this class we show that no global solution can exist. For another we derive lower bounds for the time of blow-up when blow-up occurs.

Making use of the Karamata regular variation theory and the López-Gómez localization method, we establish the uniqueness and asymptotic behaviour near the boundary ∂Ω for the large solutions of the singular boundary-value problem

where Ω is a smooth bounded domain in ℝN. The weight function b(x) is a non-negative continuous function in the domain, which can vanish on the boundary ∂Ω at different rates according to the point x0 ∊ ∂Ω. f(u) is locally Lipschitz continuous such that f(u)/u is increasing on (0, ∞) and f(u)/up = H(u) for sufficiently large u and p > 1, here H(u) is slowly varying at infinity. Our main result provides a sharp extension of a recent result of Xie with f satisfying limu→f(u)/up = H for some positive constants H > 0 and p > 1.

The Green function of singular limit-circle problems is constructed directly for the problem, not as a limit of sequences of regular Green's functions. This construction is used to obtain adjointness and self-adjointness conditions which are entirely analogous to the regular case. As an application, a new and explicit formula for the Green function of the classical Legendre problem is found.

We prove the global existence of non-negative weak solutions for a strongly coupled, fourth-order degenerate parabolic system governing the motion of two thin fluid layers in a porous medium when capillarity is the sole driving mechanism.

We derive the one-dimensional bending–torsion equilibrium model for the junction of straight rods. The starting point is a three-dimensional nonlinear elasticity equilibrium problem written as a minimization problem for a union of thin, rod-like bodies. By taking the limit as the thickness of the three-dimensional rods tends to zero, and by using ideas from the theory of Γ-convergence, we find that the resulting model consists of the union of the usual one-dimensional nonlinear bending–torsion rod models which satisfy the following transmission conditions at the junction point: continuity of displacement and rotation of the cross-sections; balance of contact forces and contact couples.

For an endomorphism φ ∈ EndR(M) of a left R-module RM, we investigate the structure and the polynomial identities of the zero-level centralizer Cen0(φ) and the factor Cen(φ)/Cen0(φ). A double zero-centralizer theorem for Cen0(Cen0(φ)) is also formulated.

An anisotropic area functional is often used as a model for the free energy of a crystal surface. For models of faceting, the anisotropy is typically such that the functional becomes non-convex, and then it may be appropriate to regularize it with an additional term involving curvature. When the weight of the curvature term tends to zero, this gives rise to a singular perturbation problem.

The structure of this problem is comparable to the theory of phase transitions studied first by Modica and Mortola. Their ideas are also useful in this context, but they have to be combined with adequate geometric tools. In particular, a variant of the theory of curvature varifolds, introduced by Hutchinson, is used in this paper. This allows an analysis of the asymptotic behaviour of the energy functionals.

We consider the elliptic system

This paper is concerned with the following semilinear elliptic equations of the form

where ε is a small positive parameter, and where f and g denote superlinear and subcritical nonlinearity. Suppose that b(x) has at least one maximum. We prove that the system has a ground-state solution (ψε, φε) for all sufficiently small ε > 0. Moreover, we show that (ψε, φε) converges to the ground-state solution of the associated limit problem and concentrates to a maxima point of b(x) in certain sense, as ε → 0. Furthermore, we obtain sufficient conditions for nonexistence of ground-state solutions.

We discuss a new class of Banach spaces which are wider than the strongly convex spaces introduced by Congxin Wu and Yongjin Li. We prove that the new class of Banach spaces lies strictly between either the class of uniformly convex spaces and strongly convex spaces or the class of fully k-convex spaces and strongly convex spaces. The new class of Banach spaces has inclusive relations with neither the class of locally uniformly convex spaces nor the class of nearly uniformly convex spaces. We obtain in addition some characterizations of this new class of Banach spaces.

This paper is concerned with the dynamics of nonlinear one-dimensional beam equations. We consider nonlinear beam equations with viscosity or with a lower-order damping term instead of the viscosity, and we establish the existence of global attractors for both systems.

We use a simple direct and basic method to prove that there is a unique isosceles trapezoid central configuration of the planar Newtonian four-body problem when two pairs of equal masses are located at adjacent vertices of a trapezoid. Such isosceles trapezoid central configurations are an exactly one-dimensional family. Explicit expressions for masses are given in terms of the size of the quadrilateral.

We determine the critical coupling of the two-dimensional Brown–Ravenhall operator with Coulomb potential. Boundedness from below has essentially been proven by Bouzouina. However, that work contains a trivial error leading to an incorrect constant that is exactly half of the actual critical constant. Furthermore, we show that the operator is in fact positive. Our proof of that is, for the most part, analogous to Tix's proof of the corresponding result for the three-dimensional operator.
