Magnesium (Mg)-based alloys have been emerging as innovative orthopedic materials due to their light weight and excellent biocompatibility. However, their too rapid degradation and subsequent loss of mechanical integrity before the bone tissue regeneration limits their applications. The presented study introduces in situ cross-linked gelatine (GEL) as a biomimetic coating onto Mg–9Al–1Zn-based alloys by carbodiimide chemistry and dip-coating. The bulk and surface morphology, chemistry, and bioactivity, as well as the corrosion behavior of uncoated and coated alloys were investigated in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution via in vitro testing and using various analytical techniques. The results revealed that the GEL coating mitigates the corrosion (from ∼2.08 to ∼1.19 mm/year) by forming a protective interface layer between the alloy surface and SBF solution, generating a bio-safer alkaline pH environment (pH ≈ 8.3), which minimizes the material resorption. GEL presence also stimulates the mineralization with calcium phosphate compounds, being patterned by its orientation and random coil conformation.

The effect of Cu addition varied from 0 to 4 mass% on the corrosion resistance and electrochemical response in Ni–Co–Cr–Mo alloys was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and Mott–Schottky analysis. Results indicate that the Ni–Co–Cr–Mo alloy with 2 mass% Cu exhibited the most superior corrosion resistance, and the presence of Cu greatly influenced the outer porous layer. The Ni–Co–Cr–Mo alloys’ corrosion resistance was not simply increasing with copper addition increasing from 0 to 4 mass%. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy etching analysis was also conducted to illustrate the fraction of Cu at various depths in the passive film, and the results reveal that a maximum limit on Cu content (appropriately 3.10 mass%) existed in the outermost surface in the present condition. Among the studied alloys, the Ni–Co–Cr–Mo–2%Cu alloy formed the thickest passive film with the lowest donor density.

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and its composites have a great potential for their applications in optoelectronic devices. In particular, small molecules can be used for tailoring optoelectronic properties of RGO. Here, we report the fabrication of a hybrid RGO/tetrasulfonate salt of the copper phthalocyanine (RGO/TSCuPc) nanocomposite phototransistor. The device shows p-type transistor behavior in the dark which changes to ambipolar behavior at the lower light intensity, and then shows a complete n-type property at the higher light intensity. The photoresponsivity of the device can be tuned by gate voltages, and the best photoresponsivity is recorded to be as high as ∼4.6 A/W for positive gate voltage and ∼6.3 A/W with a negative sign for negative gate voltage under solar light irradiation. The observations suggest that the photogenerated free electrons of TSCuPc molecules can be injected efficiently onto RGO sheets, resulting in increases in electron conduction and hole quenching.

In the past decade, nanomechanical techniques have become ubiquitous for mechanical measurement concurrently with the discovery of high-entropy alloys (HEAs). Different from large-scale testing, small-scale measurements offer quantitative details about mechanical behavior of materials at the micro/nanoscale, presenting new opportunities to probe fundamental nature of HEAs. This article will review the literature on using versatile nanomechanical tools for HEA studies, including nanoindentation, microcompression, high-temperature deformation, fracture measurement, and in situ electron microscopy. With these approaches, many interesting phenomena and properties of HEAs have been unveiled, for example, properties about incipient plasticity, strain-rate sensitivity, creep, diffusion, size-dependent strength, and fracture, which are difficult, or impossible, to be measured in macroscopic experiments. Despite current literature only focusing on a few HEA compositions and several methods, as nanomechanics and HEAs are developing rapidly, a new avenue of research is to be exploited. The article concludes with perspectives about future directions in this field.

Lignin-based phenol formaldehyde resin was synthesized using phenolated calcium lignosulfonate, and porous carbon with good wettability was prepared after carbonization and potassium hydroxide (KOH) activation. The results indicated that when the KOH to the carbonized sample mass ratio was 6:1, the prepared carbon had a rich porous structure and higher surface area, with a specific surface area of 1320.13 m2/g. Furthermore, the porous carbon exhibited a maximum specific capacitance of 204.88 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g in the potential range −1.0 to 0 V in a 6 M KOH solution and a low equivalent series resistance of 0.64 Ω. The phenolated calcium lignosulfonate-based phenol formaldehyde resin porous carbon demonstrated a favorable electric double-layer performance.

The solute equilibrium partition coefficients (ki) of C, Si, Mn, P, and S in high sulfur steel during the solidification process were investigated by the thermodynamic calculation. The effect of MnS precipitation on ki was explored. The results showed that the precipitation of MnS inclusion would influence the concentrations of solutes Mn and S, leading to the changing of ki. Due to the precipitation of MnS, the kC and kS decreased first and then increased with temperature decreasing, while kSi, kMn, and kP changed monotonously. The impacts of solidification temperature on kSi and kMn were greater than that on kC, kS, and kP. With the increase of S content, kC, kSi, and kP increased while kMn and kS decreased. Whereas, an opposite effect was found with the increase of Mn content. The order of influence extent by S and Mn contents was kSi > kS > kMn > kC > kP.

Seeking to improve the wear resistance of the Ti6Al4V (Ti64) alloy for biomedical applications, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and calcium phosphate (CaP) ceramics were added to Ti64 powder and successfully 3D-printed using a commercial laser engineered net shaping (LENS™) system. It was hypothesized that CNTs would allow for in situ carbide formation during laser processing, resulting in increased surface hardness. It was also hypothesized that CaPs would allow for protective tribofilm formation during wear, reducing material loss from wear-induced damage. Scanning electron microscopy images reveal defect-free microstructures with fine carbides evenly distributed, while X-ray diffraction confirms the presence of carbides without additional unwanted intermetallic phases. Vickers microhardness shows an increase in surface hardness in coatings containing both CNTs and CaPs. In vitro tribological studies found reduced coefficient of friction, reduced wear rates, and reduced metal ion-release concentrations in coatings containing both CNTs and CaPs. This study demonstrates the efficacy of CNTs and CaPs to improve wear resistance of Ti64 for potential applications in articulating surfaces of load-bearing implants.

N-(3-Carboxypropyl) triphenylphosphonium bromide chitosan (TPPB-CS) was synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR spectrometer, and Zeta potential. TPPB-CS showed a selectivity-toxicity among cancer cell lines (MG-63 and HepG2 cells) and mouse embryonic fibroblast cells (NIH3T3 cells). A significant effect on inhibiting cell migration in HepG2 cells was observed in vitro, and TPPB-CS could effectively inhibit tumor growth in H22-bearing mice in vivo. Furthermore, the distribution of cell cycle, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial transmembrane potential (∆ψm), the expression of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were examined to investigate the antitumor mechanism of TPPB-CS. The results suggested that the antitumor activity of TPPB-CS may be attributed to delay the cell cycle in S phase, alter the ROS and ∆ψm level, as well as regulate the TNF-α and VEGF secretion. TPPB-CS can become a promising anticancer drug for clinical therapy.

Direct polycondensation of L-lactic acid with a comonomer allows tailoring the properties of the product from the very first step. The viscous L-lactic acid co-oligomers with star-shaped architectures obtained were modified with three different acrylate monomers. Regardless the functionalization agent, UV curing was fast and all materials were cell compatible and promoted cell adhesion. The physical properties of the three star-shaped films exhibited a consistent trend as swelling capacity, hydrolytic instability, and gel content decreased simultaneously. A higher network density increased crosslinking degree and gel content among the films with an isocyanate group. The methacrylic end group functionalized material, lowest molecular weight, consistently exhibited the higher hydrolytic instability. Comparison of physical properties of these films with the corresponding linear materials reported previously confirmed the influence of precursor molecular architecture on the final material. The methodology developed herein is prone to scale-up and lead to the industrial production of new bioadhesives.

A commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) of grade 1 as a hard-to-deform material was processed successfully by ECAP processing up to four passes at room temperature via the core–sheath method using a die with an internal channel angle of 90°. The simulation and analytical calculations demonstrated that imposed back pressure on the core was increased at each pass due to strain hardening of sheath metal (AISI 1015 steel) during deformation which prevented damage accumulation and crack initiation at a high number of passes. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations of ECAP-processed Ti revealed a severely deformed microstructure which consisted of a high dislocation density and an average grain size of ∼250 nm. Mechanical properties of four-pass ECAP-processed CP-Ti showed a substantial enhancement of ultimate tensile strength up to 890 MPa associated with a reasonable elongation to failure of 15.3%.

Molten vanadate-induced hot corrosion is the major cause of failure of superalloys which are generally used at higher temperatures (such as in internal combustion engines, gas turbines, high temperature tooling and dies, and petrochemical industries and marines). This effect can be minimized by applying thermally stable coatings over the superalloy. In this aspect, the current work investigates the effect of nanostructured aluminum chromium nitride (AlCrN) and titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) coatings on the hot corrosion behavior of Co-based superalloy, Superco-605, in an aggressive environment of Na2SO4–60% V2O5 (ratio by weight) at 700 °C up to 80 cycles. Each cycle consisted of 1 h heating at 700 °C followed by 20 min cooling in an ambient temperature. Hot corrosion kinetics was studied using the thermogravimetric technique and found to follow the parabolic rate law. The corrosion surface morphology and phases formed during hot corrosion were studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was found that AlCrN coating had a better hot corrosion resistance than TiAlN coating.

Strong magnetoelectric (ME) coupling realized in magnetic/ferroelectric multiferroic heterostructures provides great potential for different integrated multiferroic devices for sensing, power, RF, and µ-wave electronics. Here, we present the most recent progress on new integrated multiferroic devices including novel integrated magnetic tunable inductors with a wide operation frequency range; integrated nonreciprocal bandpass filter with dual H- and E-field tunability based on magnetostatics surface waves; dual H- and E-field tunable RF bandpass filters with nanomechanical ME resonators; RF nanomechanical ME resonators with pico-Tesla DC magnetic fields sensitivity; a new antenna miniaturization mechanism, acoustically actuated nanomechanical ME antennas, which successfully miniaturize the magnitude in 1-2 orders with the advantages of the high magnetic field sensitivity, highest antenna gain within all nanoscale antennas at the similar frequency, and ground plane immunity on the metallic surface and the human body.

The TiCxN1−x(001)/TiC(001) interface was studied by the first-principles method to provide the theoretical basis for developing TiCxN1−x/TiC coatings. The partial density of state (PDOS), charge density, charge density difference, and Mulliken population analysis were utilized to investigate the bonding nature and the electronic characteristic of the TiC0.25N0.75/TiC interface. The corresponding results indicate that the bonding nature at the interface is ionic and covalent characteristics, which also exist in bulk materials. The extreme similarity of PDOS among interfacial C, N, and Ti atoms and their bulk counterparts reveals that the electronic structure transition at the interface is smooth. The results of Mulliken population analysis and plots of charge density and charge density difference demonstrate that the charge increased for C in the TiC side is less than that for N in the TiC0.25N0.75 side, which reveals that the ionic bond in TiC0.25N0.75 is stronger than that in TiC. Therefore, TiC0.25N0.75 coating can be an alternative choice to combine with TiC coating in the actual production process of multilayer coatings.

The effect of equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) at various temperatures (310, 330, and 350 °C) on precipitations and strengthening mechanisms of Mg–9Al–1Si alloys was investigated. The results indicated that the average grain size decreased gradually with decreasing of ECAP temperature. The distribution of the Mg2Si phase changed a little when the ECAP temperature increased. However, the different morphologies of β-Mg17Al12 phase were observed, including continuous and uncontinuous precipitation of particles at 310 and 350 °C. The continuous β-Mg17Al12 phase was hardly found and the refined β-Mg17Al12 phase was distributed dispersedly in the matrix at 330 °C. Thus, the mechanical properties of the Mg–9Al–1Si alloy was optimum: ultimate tensile strength and elongation were ∼350.8 MPa and ∼14.77%, respectively. It can be deduced that both grain refinement strengthening and precipitation strengthening play significant roles in strength increment of the alloy during the ECAP process. However, precipitation strengthening is the predominant mechanism.

The objective of the study was to modify the external surface of commercially produced polyethylene (PE) tubes made by Balton, Poland, to improve their hydrophilic properties. The process was conducted in a new dielectric barrier discharge reactor. The carrier gases were argon and air, whereas carbon dioxide and hydrogen were the doping gases. The influence of the gas composition in the plasma chamber on the surface free energy (SFE) of PE tubes was investigated. For the gas composition 50 vol% of Ar + 50 vol% of CO2, the highest value of the SFE (53.4 mJ/m2) was obtained. It means an increase in SFE approx. 17% as compared to the unmodified sample (46.0 mJ/m2). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) results indicates that on the surface of the tubes, carboxyl, carbonyl, and hydroxyl groups were formed. Those oxygen-containing groups could be responsible for the increase of the hydrophilic effect. The O/C ratio on the surface, measured by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy method, was three times higher in the case of the modified samples than in those which were not subjected to plasma treatment.

In this work, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to characterize and analyze the precipitation/dissolution kinetics of second phase particles during the cooling/reheating process in a vanadium microalloyed steel. The results indicated that three obvious exothermic peaks were detected on the cooling DSC curve. Furthermore, three corresponding endothermic peaks were also detected on the heating DSC curve. Combined with thermodynamic calculation and transmission electron microscopy analysis, these three exothermic peaks along cooling DSC curve were defined as the precipitation reaction of V(CN), the reaction of austenite transformation into ferrite and the precipitation reaction of VC, respectively. Meanwhile, three corresponding reverse reactions for cooling were also defined along the reheating DSC curve. The linear regression result revealed that the precipitation activation energies for V(CN) and VC were identified as 311.2 kJ/mol and 167.6 kJ/mol, respectively. The dissolution activation energies for VC and V(CN) were identified as 255.4 kJ/mol and 592.6 kJ/mol, respectively.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added to carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as additives to improve their electrochemical properties. In the present work, CNFs were prepared by using pressurized gyration with polyacrylonitrile as the precursor. The microstructure and electrochemical properties of samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical workstation, respectively. The results showed that the network structure formed in the fiber, and the fiber diameter decreased with the increase of working pressure. The integral area of cyclic voltammetry curve reached the maximum and the charge/discharge time of constant current charge/discharge curve reached the longest in the case of the CNT concentration is 0.50 wt% and working pressure is 0.2 MPa. At the same time, it exhibited the best electrochemical performance with a specific capacitance of 79 F/g at a current density of 100 mA/g. Compared with the specific capacitance of pure CNFs, the specific capacitance of CNFs with the concentration of CNTs 0.50 wt% increased by about 40%.
