The modified ring test is used to determine the fracture toughness of synthetic, granular, fresh-water ice average density 0.891 Mg m−3 and firn (average density 0.605 Mg m 3) from depths between 26 and 27.2 m in the E core of the Greenland Ice Sheet Project II. Average fracture toughness is 145.7kPa m2 for the manufactured ice and 108.6kPam½ for the firn. Comparison between the ice and firn suggests that ice-fracture toughness decreases with decreasing density (i.e. increasing porosity), suggesting lateral and vertical variations in the near-surface fracture resistance of glaciers and ice sheets may be related to firn densification. The modified ring test has many advantages over conventional, notch-based specimens in that complications which arise in notched specimens due to crack-length, loading-rate, notch-acuity and specimen-size effects are irrelevant for a modified ring-specimen geometry.

Late-summer subglacial water pressures have been measured in a dense array of boreholes in the ablation area of Haut Glacier d’Arolla, Switzerland. Interpolated surfaces of minimum diurnal water pressure and diurnal water-pressure variation suggest the presence of a subglacial channel within a more widespread, distributed drainage system. The channel flows along the centre of a variable pressure axis (VPA), some tens of metres wide, that is characterized by low minimum diurnal water pressures (frequently atmospheric) and high diurnal water-pressure variations. These characteristics are transitional over a lateral distance of c. 70 m to higher and more stable subglacial water pressures in the adjacent distributed system. Water-pressure variations recorded in boreholes located close to the centre of the VPA reflect the delivery of surface-derived meltwater to the glacier bed and result in a diurnally reversing, transverse hydraulic gradient that drives water out from the channel into the distributed system during the afternoon and back to the channel overnight. Subglacial observations suggest that such flow occurs through a vertically confined sediment layer. Borehole turbidity records indicate that the resulting diurnal water flows are responsible for the mobilization and transport of fine debris in suspension. Analysis of the propagation velocity and amplitude attenuation cf the diurnal pressure waves suggests that the hydraulic conductivity of the sediment layer decreases exponentially with distance from the channel, falling from c. 10−4 m s−1 at the channel boundary to c. 10−7 m s−1 70 m away. These apparent hydraulic conductivities are consistent with Darcian flow through clean sand and typical glacial till, respectively.

We suggest that fine material is systematically flushed from basal sediments located adjacent to large, melt-season drainage channels beneath warm-based glaciers. This process may have important implications for patterns of glacier erosion, hydro-chemistry and dynamics.

Jakobshavns Isbræ (69 °10′ N, 49 °59′ W) drains about 6.5% of the Greenland ice sheet and is the fastest ice stream known. The Jakobshavns Isbræ basin of about 10 000 km2 was mapped photogrammetrically from four sets of aerial photography, two taken in July 1985 and two in July 1986. Positions and elevations of several hundred natural features on the ice surface were determined for each epoch by photogrammetric block aerial triangulation, and surface velocity vectors were computed from the positions. The two flights in 1985 yielded the best results and provided most common points (716) for velocity determinations and are therefore used in the modeling studies. The data from these irregularly spaced points were used to calculate ice elevations and velocity vectors at uniformly spaced grid points 3 km apart by interpolation. The field of surface strain rates was then calculated from these gridded data and used to compute the field of surface deviatoric stresses, using the flow law of ice, for rectilinear coordinates, X, Y pointing eastward and northward, and curvilinear coordinates. L, Τ pointing longitudinally and transversely to the changing ice-flow direction, Ice-surface elevations and slopes were then used to calculate ice thicknesses and the fraction of the ice velocity due to basal sliding. Our calculated ice thicknesses are in fair agreement with an ice-thickness map based on seismic sounding and supplied to us by K. Echelmeyer. Ice thicknesses were subtracted from measured ice-surface elevations to map bed topography. Our calculation shows that basal sliding is significant only in the 10–15 km before Jakobshavns Isbræ becomes afloat in Jakobshavns Isfjord.

Blue-ice areas (BIAs) are an extreme example of a local mass-balance gradient and are furthermore reasonably stable in time and space owing to local feed-back mechanisms. A meteorological experiment, performed in and around a blue-ice area in Dronning Maud Land. East Antarctica, showed that during drifting-snow conditions surface wind speed over the blue ice behind the mountain barrier is equal to that away from the mountains, when corrected for surface roughness and stability. This implies that use of diagnostic katabatic wind models to estimate divergence of drifting snow can be extended to the situation where nunataks are involved in preventing the drifting snow from passing, which is the case for most BIAs. A diagnostic model is tested for a two-dimensional profile in Terre Adélie. after which it is applied to entire East Antarctica. The present order-of-magnitude estimate shows that areas sensitive to blue-ice formation appear where precipitation is low and mean annual wind speed is high, i.e. in Dronning Maud Land and the drainage basin of Lambert Glacier. The results appeared to be especially sensitive to a change in inversion strength: a decrease in inversion strength weakens the katabatic flow, and thus the amount of snowdrift transport, reducing the area where BIAs can develop.

Landsat multispectral scanner and thematic mapper images were co-registered For the Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord region in East Greenland and were used to map glacier drainage-basin areas, changes in the positions of tide-water glacier termini and to estimate surface velocities of the larger tide-water glaciers. Statistics were compiled to document distance and area changes to glacier termini. The methodologies developed in this study are broadly applicable to the investigation of tide-water glaciers in other areas. The number of images available for consecutive years and the accuracy with which images are co-registered are key factors that influence the degree to which regional glacier dynamics can be characterized using remotely sensed data.

Three domains of glacier state were interpreted: net increase in terminus area in the southern part of the study area, net loss of terminus area for glaciers in upper Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord and a slight loss of glacier terminus area northward from Ryberg Fjord. Local increases in the concentrations of drifting icebergs in the fjords coincide with the observed extension of glacier termini positions Ice-surface velocity estimates were derived for several glaciers using automated image cross-correlation techniques The velocity determined for Kangerdlugssuaq Gletscher is approximately 5.0 km a−1 and that for Kong Christian IV Gletscher is 0.9 km a−1. The continuous presence of icebergs and brash ice in front of these glaciers indicates sustained rates of ice-front calving.

A meteorological and glaciological experiment was carried out in July 1993 at the margin of the Greenland ice sheet in Kronprins Christian Land, eastern north Greenland. Within a small area (about 100 m2) daily measurements were made on ten ablation stakes fixed in “light” and “dark” ice and were compared to each other. Simultaneously, the components of the energy balance, including net radiation, sensible-heat flux, latent-heat flux and conductive-heat flux in the ice were determined. Global radiation, longwave incoming radiation and albedo were measured, and longwave outgoing radiation was calculated by assuming that the glacier surface was melting. Sensible-and latent-heat fluxes were calculated from air temperature, humidity and wind speed. Conductive-heat flux in the ice was estimated by temperature-profile measurements in the uppermost ice layer. Net radiation is the major source of ablation energy, and turbulent fluxes are smaller energy sources by about three times, while heat flux into the ice is a substantial heat sink, reducing energy available for ice melt. Albedo varies from 0.42 to 0.56 within the experimental site and causes relatively large differences in ablation at stakes close to each other. Small-scale albedo variations should therefore be carefully sampled for large-scale energy-balance calculations.

The ice cap on Nelson Island in the South Shetland Islands, West Antarctica, was studied between 1985 and 1989. The ice cap has an average thickness of 120 m. it is temperate, exists under the sub-Antarctic maritime climate and almost completely covers the island. Owing to intense percolation of meltwater (and, to some extent, liquid precipitation), the snow-firn layer is in the soaked facies, with a firn-ice transition at a depth of 25-26 m at the summit. A force-balance model suggests that the ice is almost linearly viscous but has a high viscosity. The model further suggests that basal sliding makes a larger contribution to the ice movement than does ice deformation. From 1970 to 1988. the average accumulation rate was 120 kg m−2a−1 at the centre, and between 1985 and 1989 the equilibrium-line elevation averaged 110m a.s.l. Analysis of chemical impurities in the surface snow suggests that the precipitation source is mainly local marine air masses and that human activity has already exerted a detectable influence on the local environment.

In the foreland of the Vestari-Hagafellsjökull glacier, Langajökull, central Iceland, three scales of subglacial bed forms are found: drumlins, flutes and lineations. The smaller bed forms are superimposed upon the larger. These three bed forms probably formed as a result of the presence of a rigid suhglacial core producing a lee-side low-pressure area into which sediment flowed and collected. The cores of the drumlins are tumuli (lava blisters), whilst the cores of the flutes and lineations were large clasts.

Differences between the three scales of bed forms are that: (a) the flutes and lineations are far more mobile features as their cores could move within the deforming layer, whilst the drumlin bedrock cores were fixed; (b) the lineations formed in association with a clast pavement.

The change in scale of the bed forms may he related to changes in thickness of the deforming layer and size of the core. At this site, smaller bed forms were superimposed upon larger bed forms and these may have formed as the deforming layer progressively thinned in association with glacial retreat.

This paper presents radar-altimeter scattering models for each of the diagenetic zones of the Greenland ice sheet. AAFE radar-altimeter waveforms obtained during the 1991 and 1993 NASA multi-sensor airborne altimetry experiments over Greenland reveal that the Ku-band return pulse changes significantly with the different diagenetic zones. These changes are due to varying amounts of surface and volume scattering in the return waveform.

In the ablation and soaked zones, where surface scattering dominates the AAFE return, geophysical parameters such as rms surface height and rms surface slope are obtained by fitting the waveforms to a surface-scattering model. Waveforms from the percolation zone show that sub-sruface ice features have a much more significant effect on the return pulse than the surrounding snowpack. Model percolation waveforms, created using a combined surface- and volume-scattering model and an ice-feature distribution obtained during the 1993 field season, agree well with actual AAFE waveforms taken in the same time period. Using a combined surface- and volume-scattering model for the dry-snow-zone return waveforms, the rms surface height and slope and the attenuation coefficient of the snowpack are obtained. These scattering models not only allow geophysical parameters of the ice sheet to he measured but also help in the understanding of satellite radar-altimeter data.

The problem of improving the spatial resolution of ice-sheet elevations derived from satellite-altimeter observations is investigated theoretically in two dimensions. An equation for the echo is described that allows the elevation to be determined In linear operations on the echo. An approximate solution of the equation is explored to illustrate the behaviour of the solution. The modifications necessary to consider a regularly sampled solution are described and the effects of echo fluctuations on the reconstructed surface are considered. Numerical examples are described. It is shown that, in general terms, the resolution may be limited by sampling or by echo fluctuations but that in the case of current practical measurements it is the sampling that determines the resolution. This resolution is smaller than has been considered possible hitherto. Limitations of the method are discussed together with extensions to a wider class of problems including three-dimensional reconstructions.

Since snow avalanches are believed to release from zones of localized weakness, knowledge of snow-strength patterns is important for determining slope stability and for applying effective avalanche-control measures. In this study, the spatial variability of snow resistance (an index of snow strength) and depth were measured and compared with terrain features on two inclined slopes. A refined instrument allowed the strength of an entire snow slab to be characterized in a short time. The spatial pattern of trees appeared to affect the pattern of snow depth at one site, where a significant linear relationship was found between snow depth and average snow resistance. These results suggest that localized snow-depth variations may be important in snow-strength genesis. Although a linear relationship existed at that site, additional factors may be critically relevant. A second site with more complex terrain features and less localized wind drifting did not show a linear relationship between depth and average resistance. Instead, complex patterns of resistance demonstrated that many factors contribute to snow resistance. In particular, die snow overlying rocks was found to have significantly weaker resistance than that in adjacent areas not over rocks.

Three small Alaskan glaciers with different bed conditions were studied: Exit Glacier had a thin deforming layer and produced subglacial and proglacial glaciotectonic land forms; Childs Glacier also had a thin deforming layer but the upper part was frozen to the ice; Matanuska Glacier had no deforming layer but had subglacial debris-rich ice. Since it has been shown that sediment at the base can account for the majority of ice movement, it is suggested that there is a deforming bed/debris-rich continuum whereby similar processes occur throughout the different subglacial environments. These include: similar longitudinal deformation patterns (compression at the margin, extension and simple shear up-glacier); similar vertical deformation patterns, increase in deformation (and fabric strength) upwards through the sequence (leading to the attenuation of stratified ice into dispersed ice); and similar and interrelated incorporation processes. The major differences were that the processes occurred at a much faster rate within the deforming layer and that probably only the deforming layer will be recorded in the geological record.

For Yanamarey Glacier in Cordillera Blanca, Peru, mostly situated between about 5000 and 4600 m, maps of the surface topography at a scale of 1: 5000 obtained by terrestrial triangulation for 1973, 1982 and 1988 and by aerial photogrammetry for 1948 and 1962 are compared with the glacier boundaries from a 1939 map and an undated maximum extent inferred from moraine morphology. The glacier length decreased from the maximum, 2800 m to 1600 m in 1948. and to 1250 m in 1988, with an accompanying decrease in area from 17 × 105 to 10 × 105 and thence to 8 × 105 m2. The shrinkage of ice volume was 35 × 106 m3 from the maximum to 1948. and 29 × 106 m3 from 1948 to 1988. compared to a total remaining ice volume of about 25 × 106 m3 in 1988. This quantitative assessment of mass-loss rates creates the observational basis for sensitivity studies of the climatic forcing.

A new device for measuring air content in polar ice has been designed, built and tested with 22 samples of Antarctic ice. The new technique is based on the barometric method which implies: (1) air extraction under vacuum by melting refreezing of the ice sample placed in a calibrated cell, and (2) accurate air-pressure and temperature measurements. The new apparatus simplifies the experimental procedure, decreases the duration of measurement and can eventually be used in the field. It provides results with an accuracy equivalent to or better than other methods previously used.

A lattice Boltzmann technique for modeling Navier–Stokes fluid flow is extended to allow steady-state simulations of glaciers and other slow-flowing solids. The technique is based on a statistical mechanical representation of flowing ice as a set of particles (populations) which translate and collide on a face-centered cubic lattice. The average trajectories of the populations give the velocities of the ice at any point in the glacier. The method has considerable advantages over other techniques, including its ability to handle complex realistic geometries without additional complications to the code Examples are presented for two-dimensional simulations.

Mapping the spatial distribution of c-axis orientations in ice thin sections is not much more difficult than preparing c-axis scatter plots but can reveal additional information about processes responsible for the observed fabric and texture of the ice. Distributions of angles between c axes of neighboring grains from the Byrd Station (West Antarctica) ice core suggest that polygonization causes average grain-size to stabilize below 400 m depth.
