Let (M,gλ) be a 𝒞2-family of complete convex-cocompact metrics with pinched negative sectional curvatures on a fixed manifold. We show that the topological entropy htop(gλ) of the geodesic flow is a 𝒞1 function of λ and we give an explicit formula for its derivative. We apply this to show that if ρλ(Γ)⊂PSL2(ℂ) is an analytic family of convex-cocompact faithful representations of a Kleinian group Γ, then the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set Λρλ(Γ) is a 𝒞1 function of λ. Finally, we give a variation formula for Λρλ (Γ).

The dynamics of endomorphisms (smooth non-invertible maps) presents many differences from that of diffeomorphisms or that of expanding maps; most methods from those cases do not work if the map has a basic set of saddle type with self-intersections. In this paper we study the conditional measures of a certain class of equilibrium measures, corresponding to a measurable partition subordinated to local stable manifolds. We show that these conditional measures are geometric probabilities on the local stable manifolds, thus answering in particular the questions related to the stable pointwise Hausdorff and box dimensions. These stable conditional measures are shown to be absolutely continuous if and only if the respective basic set is a non-invertible repeller. We find also invariant measures of maximal stable dimension, on folded basic sets. Examples are given, too, for such non-reversible systems.

A renewal system is a shift space consisting of all bi-infinite free concatenations of some finitely many words. It is known that the zeta function of a renewal system generated by a circular set coincides with the generating function of the circular set. We extend this result to the systems generated by almost circular sets. Also we establish the formulas for the zeta functions of the systems generated by codes and pure codes, respectively. Using the formulas, we show that pure codes generating shifts of finite type are circular.

We show that every locally finite random graph embedded in the plane with an isometry-invariant distribution can be five-colored in an invariant and deterministic way, under some non-triviality assumption and a mild assumption on the tail of edge lengths. The assumptions hold for any Voronoi map on a point process that has no non-trivial symmetries almost surely, hence we improve and generalize previous results on six-coloring the Voronoi map on a Poisson point process (see Angel, Benjamini, Gurel-Gurevich, Mayerovitch and Peled [Stationary map coloring. Preprint, 2008]).

We study ergodic properties of invariant measures for the partially hyperbolic horseshoes, introduced in Díaz et al [Destroying horseshoes via heterodimensional cycles: generating bifurcations inside homoclinic classes. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 29 (2009), 433–474]. These maps have a one-dimensional center direction Ec, and are at the boundary of the (uniformly) hyperbolic diffeomorphisms (they are constructed bifurcating hyperbolic horseshoes via heterodimensional cycles). We prove that every ergodic measure is hyperbolic, but the set of Lyapunov exponents in the central direction has gap: all ergodic invariant measures have negative exponent, with the exception of one ergodic measure with positive exponent. As a consequence, we obtain the existence of equilibrium states for any continuous potential. We also prove that there exists a phase transition for the smooth family of potentials given by ϕt=t log ∣DF∣Ec∣.

For a measure-preserving transformation, the entropy being zero means that there is no increasing σ-algebra. In this note, we prove that a similar phenomenon occurs for C2 diffeomorphisms when considering the increment between the partial entropies associated with different exponents.

We provide examples of two-dimensional diffeomorphisms which cannot be topologically conjugate to any diffeomorphism of a higher smoothness.

We study how parallel chip-firing on the complete graph Kn changes behavior as we vary the total number of chips. Surprisingly, the activity of the system, defined as the average number of firings per time step, does not increase smoothly in the number of chips; instead it remains constant over long intervals, punctuated by sudden jumps. In the large n limit we find a ‘devil’s staircase’ dependence of activity on the number of chips. The proof proceeds by reducing the chip-firing dynamics to iteration of a self-map of the circle S1, in such a way that the activity of the chip-firing state equals the Poincaré rotation number of the circle map. The stairs of the devil’s staircase correspond to periodic chip-firing states of small period.

In this paper we give an example of a random perturbation of the Cat Map that produces a ‘global statistical attractor’ in the form of a line segment. The transition probabilities for this random perturbation are smooth in some but not all directions. All initial distributions on 𝕋2 are attracted to distributions supported on this line segment.

The study of fixed points is a classical subject in geometry and dynamics. If the circle acts in a Hamiltonian fashion on a compact symplectic manifold M, then it is classically known that there are at least fixed points; this follows from Morse theory for the momentum map of the action. In this paper we use Atiyah–Bott–Berline–Vergne (ABBV) localization in equivariant cohomology to prove that this conclusion also holds for symplectic circle actions with non-empty fixed sets, as long as the Chern class map is somewhere injective—the Chern class map assigns to a fixed point the sum of the action weights at the point. We complement this result with less sharp lower bounds on the number of fixed points, under no assumptions; from a dynamical systems viewpoint, our results imply that there is no symplectic periodic flow with exactly one or two equilibrium points on a compact manifold of dimension at least eight.

For a surface diffeomorphism f∈Diff l(M), with l≥8, we prove that if f exhibits a non-transversal heteroclinic cycle composed of two fixed saddle points Q1 and Q2, one dissipative and the other expansive, then there exists an open set 𝒱⊂Diff l(M) such that and there exists a dense set 𝒟⊂𝒱 such that for all g∈𝒟, g exhibits infinitely many invariant periodic curves with irrational rotation numbers. Moreover, these curves are C1 conjugated to an irrational rotation on 𝕊1.

Given a polynomial or a rational function f we include it in a space of maps. We introduce local coordinates in this space, which are essentially the set of critical values of the map. Then we consider an arbitrary periodic orbit of f with multiplier ρ⁄=1 as a function of the local coordinates, and establish a simple connection between the dynamical plane of f and the function ρ in the space associated to f. The proof is based on the theory of quasiconformal deformations of rational maps. As a corollary, we show that multipliers of non-repelling periodic orbits are also local coordinates in the space.

For any regular Markov operator on the space of finite Borel measures on a Polish space we give a Yosida-type decomposition of the state space, which yields a parametrization of the ergodic probability measures associated with this operator in terms of particular subsets of the state space. We use this parametrization to prove an integral decomposition of every invariant probability measure in terms of the ergodic probability measures and give an ergodic decomposition of the state space. This extends results by Yosida [Functional Analysis. Springer, Berlin, 1980, Ch. XIII.4], Hernández-Lerma and Lasserre [Ergodic theorems and ergodic decomposition for Markov chains. Acta Appl. Math.54 (1998), 99–119] and Zaharopol [An ergodic decomposition defined by transition probabilities. Acta Appl. Math.104 (2008), 47–81], who considered the setting of locally compact separable metric spaces. Our extension to Polish spaces solves an open problem posed by Zaharopol (loc. cit.) in a satisfactory manner.

The appearance of numerous period-doubling cascades is among the most prominent features of parametrized maps, that is, smooth one-parameter families of maps F:ℝ×𝔐→𝔐, where 𝔐 is a smooth locally compact manifold without boundary, typically ℝN. Each cascade has infinitely many period-doubling bifurcations, and it is typical to observe that, whenever there are any cascades, there are infinitely many cascades. We develop a general theory of cascades for generic F.

For the quadratic–linear polynomial differential systems with a finite singular point, we classify the ones which have a global analytic first integral, and provide the explicit expression of their first integrals.

We show that for a C1 generic subset of diffeomorphisms far from homoclinic tangencies, any infinite sequence of sinks or sources must accumulate on a homoclinic class of some saddle point with codimension one.

Attractors for hyperbolic diffeomorphisms are known to possess unique Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen measures with interesting properties. In this paper we investigate the case of non-invertible maps (endomorphisms) which have repellers Λ. We work with preimages of points in a neighbourhood of the repeller (assumed to be non-expanding); the situation here is different than the one for diffeomorphisms or positive iterates of endomorphisms. We give two methods to obtain invariant measures from local inverse iterates. We show that if Λ is a hyperbolic s-conformal repeller for f, not necessarily expanding, and if f is d-to-1 on Λ then for Lebesgue almost every x in the repelling basin of Λ there are histories of x asymptotically distributed like the equilibrium measure μs of the Hölder continuous potential Φs, with Φs (y):=log ∣Dfs (y)∣ for y∈Λ. The measure μs plays the role of an inverse Sinai–Ruelle–Bowen measure on the non-invertible repeller. We prove also that there exists a set A⊂Wuε(Λ) with λ(A)=λ(Wuε(Λ)) (where λ(⋅) is the Lebesgue measure) such that for any z∈A and any real continuous function g, with In particular, we obtain the asymptotic distribution of preimages of Lebesgue almost all points for a class of hyperbolic toral endomorphisms on 𝕋m,m≥2 .

Let π be a factor map from an irreducible shift of finite type X to a shift space Y. Let ν be an invariant probability measure on Y with full support. We show that every measure on X of maximal relative entropy over ν is fully supported. As a result, given any invariant probability measure ν on Y with full support, there is an invariant probability measure μ on X with full support that maps to ν under π. If ν is ergodic, μ can be chosen to be ergodic. These results can be generalized to the case of sofic shifts. We demonstrate that the results do not extend to general shift spaces by providing counterexamples.

In this paper, using the Kolmogorov–Arnold–Moser method we prove reducibility of a class of nonlinear quasi-periodic differential equation with degenerate equilibrium point under small perturbation and obtain a quasi-periodic solution near the equilibrium point.

We show the existence of a bounded Borel measurable saturated compensation function for any factor map between subshifts. As an application, we find the Hausdorff dimension and measures of full Hausdorff dimension for a compact invariant set of an expanding non-conformal map on the torus given by an integer-valued diagonal matrix. These problems were studied in [23] for a compact invariant set whose symbolic representation is a shift of finite type under the condition of the existence of a saturated compensation function. By using the ergodic equilibrium states of a constant multiple of a Borel measurable compensation function, we extend the results to the general case where this condition might not hold, presenting a formula for the Hausdorff dimension for a compact invariant set whose symbolic representation is a subshift and studying invariant ergodic measures of full dimension. We study uniqueness and properties of such measures for a compact invariant set whose symbolic representation is a topologically mixing shift of finite type.
