Summary
ABSTRACT. In chronological order, the author shows the sea's entry onto stage with the Third Crusade, for Richard the Lionheart as well as Philippe Auguste, the absence of maritime policy in the two thirteenth-century dynasties, and the growing role of the sea in the activities of Aquitaine and Flanders. He shows that the Hundred Years' War was won at sea, with Charles V reorganizing the Clos des Galées and Henry V making his fleet into a war machine.
