The once large Jewish community in Poland left numerous traces of its activities. Much information pertaining to the history of Jews in Poland can be found in the preserved records. The late Janina Morgensztern of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw edited between 1963 and 1969 records of the Crown Registry (Metryka Koronna) relating to Jews in Poland for the years 15 7 4-1696. She based her publication on two sections of records of the Crown Registry, namely the Libri inscriptionum, and the Sigillata (documents marked with the royal seal). The present editor, Maurycy Hom (a professor at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw), has decided to complete the work that Morgensztem began. In order to make the publication more complete, however, Horn, has enlarged its scope, by adding to it four other sections of the Crown Registry. These are Books of Public Business (Ksifgi spraw publicznych), erroneously called Chancellor's Books (Ksifgi Kanclerskie); Books of the Referendary Court (Ksifgi Sądu Referendarskiego); Books of Legacies (Libri legationum, Ksifgi poselstw); and books of various courts. Incidentally, there is not very much information aboutJews in the Books of Legacies, or in those of the various courts.

Regesty dokumentów is divided into two volumes and covers the period of 1697-1795. Volume I deals with the Saxon era (1697-1763), while volume II, composed of two parts, is devoted to the reign of Stanislas August Poniatowski (1764-95). At the time of writing, only part I of the second volume, covering the years 1764-79, has come out. Part II was put in the hands of the publisher about two years ago. The publication is composed of an introduction, a list of abbreviations, ten chapters, and indexes of names, terms and places. As the Libris legationum have been preserved only until 1761, and as the Judiciary books of 1764-79 do not contain any information about Jews, part I of volume II contains only materials from the Libri inscriptionum; the Sigillata; the Books of Public Business; and the Books of the Referendary Court. Otherwise, part I of volume II has been edited in the same manner as volume one of the publication under review.
