Summary

This appendix details the survey questions used to construct the variables used in the analysis of candidate behavior, with particular attention to questions asked in the 1999 round (the 1995 survey is similar, but omits some questions as discussed in the text). Questions that were not used in the analysis, as well as those capturing basic demographic information (interview number, region), are omitted for space considerations.

Block 1: Demographic Information

1.01. Do you consider yourself a professional politician?

1.02. Do you own your own business or part of a business?

  1. Yes

1.03. How much of your time during each week would you say you spend doing political work?

  1. 100 percent of my time

  5. Less than 25 percent of my time

Block 2: Activity in Parties, Blocks, or Societal Organizations

2.01. Why did you want to join a party organization (asked only of partisans)?

  1. Party leaders invited you to become a candidate with the support of their party.

  2. You wanted to join the party in order to run on the party list.

  3. You wanted the party to support you in your single-member district race.

  4. The party was popular in your district.

  5. The party was able to give you financial and material support for your campaign.
