Summary
WILLIAM BERKELEY PORTMAN, 1728–38
On the 23 February 1728 Henry Portman, esquire, of Orchard Portman, died at the age of eighty-eight at Sherborne in Dorset and was buried sixteen days later in the family vault at Orchard, being the last of the family to rest there. Elaborate provisions in his will for a monument to be set up on or near his grave have failed to enable any record to be kept of his features. His care to leave the wife who survived him properly equipped with chariot, horses, ornaments and jewellery indicate her tastes, and sundry references to costly ‘snugh’ boxes his own habits. He had married firstly Penelope, daughter of Sir William Haslewood, knight, of Maidwell in Northants, and secondly Meliora, daughter of William Fitch, esquire, of High Hall in Dorset; but, when he died without heir, the Portman property which he had inherited, including the manor of West Coker, passed under the will of the last Sir William Portman to the grandson of that baronet's cousin Philippa, who was the daughter of Sir George Speke of White Lackington and of his wife Joan, who in turn was daughter of King James's baronet, Sir John Portman. Philippa had married Edward Berkeley of Pylle and their grandson, William Berkeley, on succeeding to the Portman estates took the name of Portman only.
