Volume 2 of The Cambridge History of Global Migrations presents an authoritative overview of the various continuities and changes in migration and globalization from the 1800s to the present day. Despite revolutionary changes in communication technologies, the growing accessibility of long-distance travel, and globalization across major economies, the rise of nation-states empowered immigration regulation and bureaucratic capacities for enforcement that curtailed migration. One major theme worldwide across the post-1800 centuries was the differentiation between “skilled” and “unskilled” workers, often considered through a racialized lens; it emerged as the primary divide between greater rights of immigration and citizenship for the former, and confinement to temporary or unauthorized migrant status for the latter. Through thirty-one chapters, this volume further evaluates the long global history of migration; and it shows that despite the increased disciplinary systems, the primacy of migration remains and continues to shape political, economic, and social landscapes around the world.

Asian Americans play a prominent role in the state surveillance story, because Asian Americans play an ambiguous role in both international relations and domestic race relations.4 Although people of Asian descent have been arriving in the Americas since before the Civil War – Asian soldiers fighting on both sides of the internecine conflict – Asian immigrants and their American-born descendants, whatever their formal status and however assimilated, have been portrayed as “sojourners” only temporarily resident in the United States and likely to return to a homeland to which they have remained stealthily loyal.5 The persistent theme has been that Asians are inassimilable into American society, whether by biology, culture, or their own collective choices. The assumption that it is contradictory to be both Asian and American has been used, explicitly and implicitly, to justify discrimination against Asian Americans.

Scientists publish in academic journals, but the opportunity to significantly educate the public often comes from scientists’ interactions with the media directly. Unfortunately, students rarely are trained in how to handle media requests, or how to generate pieces for the media that can increase coverage of their work. This chapter, written by a former reporter, offers a helpful framework and specific tips for scientists’ successful interactions with the media

As we meet at the end of this journey, and before you and I embark on separate paths, let us reflect on the overarching theme of this book. My sincere hope is that you have gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of genome editing. This technology holds the power to fundamentally change the world, perhaps in ways we cannot yet begin to comprehend. How exciting it is that you and I are both alive at this time, when we can attest to having witnessed the world before and after the advent of genome editing!

The barriers to transfers and influences from Russia’s steppes were overcome by a series of “bridges”: Americans and Russians recognized similarities between the steppes and Great Plains; migrants to the United States from the Russian Empire, especially Mennonite farmers and Jewish people, acted as conduits, and assisted in overcoming the language barrier; Americans and Russians studied agriculture in each other’s grassland region and made contact with each other.

The subject of this chapter is the introduction and success of varieties of wheat from the steppes in the Great Plains. After considering the types of crops grown in the two regions, it analyzes the various ways in which they made the journey: with immigrants, especially Mennonites; introduction by government “plant explorers”; exchanges between Russian/Soviet and American crop scientists; and the international grain trade. The persistence of stories about the role of Mennonite immigrants is subjected to particular scrutiny.

− ESG–Agency scholars focus on the question of how knowledge can be a source of authority for a diverse set of state and nonstate actors, allowing them to influence environmental decision-making. − Key themes in the literature on agency in earth system governance over the past decade include the knowledge-based agency of scientists and local or indigenous actors, learning, and the link between knowledge and power.− ESG–Agency scholarship contributes to larger debates in the social sciences concerning the growing importance of participatory processes of knowledge co-production, moving beyond the conventional primacy of scientific expertise in environmental governance and elevating the role of nonscientific knowledge holders.
