A microscopic theory of the kaolinite-water system is presented, based upon the assumption that the clay-water interaction may be envisioned as partly hydration of the exchangeable cations and partly adsorption by the oxygen and hydroxyl surfaces. The theory treats exchangeable cation hydration quantum-mechanically as an ion-dipole phenomenon and considers water adsorption by the mineral surface as a problem in hydrogen bonding. A statistical mechanical model incorporating the quantum-theoretical results is then invoked to find the contribution of each component interaction to the initial portion of the adsorption isotherm for homoionic kaolinite. Good agreement between the theoretical calculations and available experimental data is achieved for water vapor adsorption by Li-, Na-, K-, and Mg-kaolinite, without the use of ad hoc empirical parameters. The concordance, in turn, is used to suggest that the basis for adsorption hysteresis in kaolinite-water vapor systems is the irreversible transition: mineral surface water → cation hydration water.

The conditions under which an exchanger phase will behave as an ideal mixture are established from thermodynamic principles. It is shown that, if a stoichiometric cation-exchange reaction is reversible, the exchanger phase will exhibit ideal behavior if the Vanselow selectivity coefficient is independent of the exchanger composition. This criterion is applied to some recently published data for Na+-trace metal cation exchange on Camp Berteau montmorillonite. An analysis of the data suggests that, so long as the exchange process is reversible, Na+-trace metal cation exchange produces an exchanger phase that behaves as an ideal mixture.

The vibrational modes of clay minerals in aqueous suspension are uniquely accessible to Raman spectroscopy, but this potentially powerful approach has not been applied heretofore to study clays in aqueous samples. In this paper, Raman spectra in the 100- to 4000-cm−1 region were obtained for kaolinite in aqueous suspension and in air-dry samples. Contact with water perturbed the low-wavenumber Raman spectrum (100 to 1000 cm−1) significantly with respect to relative band intensities and resulted in a pH dependence of the integrated intensity in the OH-stretching region. Comparison of the Raman and infrared (IR) spectra of air-dry kaolinite samples confirmed five Raman-active OH-stretching modes at 3621, 3652, 3668, 3688, and 3696 cm−1, in contrast to four IR-active modes at 3621, 3652, 3668, and 3695 cm−1. The Raman spectra of two kaolinites of different origin showed differences in band positions and intensities. These results suggest that Raman spectroscopy may provide a useful method to study clay mineral-water interactions, colloidal behavior in clay suspensions, and variations in clay mineral structure.

The adsorption of citrate, at 10 4−10−3 M initial concentration, by pseudoboehmite suspended in 0.02 M NaC1O4 was investigated at varying pH. Citrate shows a strong affinity for the pseudoboehmite surface, as seen in the adsorption isotherm at pH 6. Adsorption envelopes of adsorbed citrate vs. pH for a given initial citrate concentration are characteristic for the adsorption of a polyprotic acid by a variable-charge mineral. The envelope data were fit well by the Constant Capacitance Model assuming a ligand-exchange adsorption mechanism, three monodentate surface species of citrate, and a reactive surface OH density of 0.4 mol kg−1. Aqueous speciation calculations suggest that solubility equilibrium with pseudoboehmite was attained at pH > 9 and that particulate or polymeric Al may have existed at 6 < pH < 9. Dissolved Al appeared to reduce the adsorption of citrate at pH < 5.5 via solution complexation reactions.

Specimen samples of Crook County montmorillonite and Silver Hill illite, purified and prepared in the Na-form, were imaged under 80% relative humidity using an atomic force microscope. The direct images showed clearly the hexagonal array of hexagonal rings of oxygen ions expected for the basal planes of 2:1 phyllosilicates. Fourier transformation of the digital information obtained by the microscope scanning tip led to an estimate of 5.1 ± 0.3 Å for the nearest-neighbor separation, in agreement with the ideal nearest-neighbor spacing of 5.4 Å for hexagonal rings as derived from X-ray powder diffraction data. The atomic force microscope should prove to be a useful tool for the molecular-scale resolution of clay mineral surfaces that contain adsorbed macromolecules.

The Nriagu polymer model of 2:1 layer type clay minerals develops from the premise that clay minerals are condensation copolymers of solid hydroxides. In the Mattigod-Sposito formulation of the model, standard state chemical potentials (standard Gibbs energies of formation from the elements) of 2:1 clay minerals are predicted quantitatively with a linear correlation equation relating the standard Gibbs energy of the polymerization reaction (ΔGor) to the half-cell layer charge of the clay mineral and to the valence and ionic radius of the exchangeable cation. It is now shown that this correlation equation can be derived from two basic assumptions: (1) that the standard Gibbs energy change for the transfer of a cation in a pure hydroxide solid to a hydroxide component in the tetrahedral or octahedral sheet of a 2:1 clay mineral is independent of the nature of the cation and (2) that the difference between ΔGor for the polymerization reaction to form a 2:1 clay mineral and ΔGor for the same reaction to form the zero layer-charge analog of the clay mineral is proportional to the number of interlayer exchangeable cations per unit cell of the clay mineral and to the radius of its exchangeable cation. Both of these assumptions can be tested experimentally, independent of the polymer model.

Infrared (IR) spectra in the fundamental and near-IR regions were obtained for Na-saturated Wyoming montmorillonite and reduced-charge Na/Li-saturated Wyoming montmorillonites hydrated under water vapor at 50% RH and dehydrated under vacuum. For the Na-montmorillonite, changes in the intensities of the structural OH-bending modes, particularly that of the MgAlOH group, were observed as the clay was dehydrated. This result was interpreted as evidence that exchangeable Na ions lose solvation water and settle into the ditrigonal cavities on the clay surface as it becomes desiccated. For the Na/Li-montmorillonites, the structural OH-bending modes also decreased in IR intensity because of Li+ migration into the octahedral sheet. The fundamental IR spectra of D2O adsorbed by the montmorillonites showed characteristic absorptions at 2685, 2510, 2400, and 1205 cm-1 that decreased in intensity proportionally to the cation-exchange capacity. This result, along with corroborating data from X-ray powder diffractograms and from near-IR diffuse reflectance spectra of H2O adsorbed by the clays, suggest that the exchangeable cations on Na-montmorillonite dissociated from the clay surface as it hydrated and played a significant role in organizing the structure of adsorbed water at low water contents.

Hydroxy-Al-montmorillonite was prepared by mixing Na-Wyoming montmorillonite with Al(OH)2.5 polycations and aging the mixture for 10 days. The reactions of this complex with citric acid at millimolar concentrations were investigated at different pHs for a 4-hr reaction time. The citrate sorption data, X-ray powder diffraction patterns of the montmorillonite adsorbent, and solubility products for Al(OH)3, estimated after computer speciation of the aqueous solution phase, suggested two reaction mechanisms, depending on pH. At 4 < pH < 5.5, the complex was stable, and only external hydroxy-Al polycations could react with citrate, yielding a sorption envelope characteristic of an acid having a low pKa. At higher pH, and particularly at pH > 7, the interlayer Al-polymers became accessible to the ligand and desorbed quickly from the montmorillonite basal planes to form a new, external, X-ray-amorphous solid phase with citrate. This reaction produced a large second peak in the sorption envelopes near pH 8, which was controlled by the increasingly negative surface charge at high pH and by the initial concentration of citric acid. This ligand accelerated, i.e., favored kinetically, the dissociation of adsorbed hydroxy-Al polymers from montmorillonite at pH > 7.

Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of interlayer molecular structure in monolayer hydrates of Na-saturated Wyoming-type montmorillonites and vermiculite were performed. Detailed comparison of the stimulation results with experimental diffraction and thermodynamic data for these clay-water systems indicated good semiquantitative to quantitative agreement. The MC simulations revealed that, in the monolayer hydrate, interlayer water molecules tend to increase their occupation of the midplane as layer charge increases. As the percentage of tetrahedral layer charge increases, water molecules are induced to interact with the siloxane surface O atoms through hydrogen bonding and Na+ counter-ions are induced to form inner-sphere surface complexes. These results suggest the need for careful diffraction experiments on a series of monolayer hydrates of montmorillonite whose layer charge and tetrahedral isomorphic substitution charge vary systematically.

Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of molecular structure in the interlayers of 2:1 Na-saturated clay minerals were performed to address several important simulation methodological issues. Investigation was focused on monolayer hydrates of the clay minerals because these systems provide a severe test of the quality and sensitivity of MC interlayer simulations. Comparisons were made between two leading models of the water-water interaction in condensed phases, and the sensitivity of the simulations to the size or shape of the periodically-repeated simulation cell was determined. The results indicated that model potential functions permitting significant deviations from the molecular environment in bulk liquid water are superior to those calibrated to mimic the bulk water structure closely. Increasing the simulation cell size or altering its shape from a rectangular 21.12 Å × 18.28 Å × 6.54 Å cell (about eight clay mineral unit cells) had no significant effect on the calculated interlayer properties.

A combined application of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopies with thermal methods was used to determine the chemical form of V(IV) in a Georgia kaolinite (KGa-I). Precise values of the EPR spectroscopic g-values and hyperfine coupling constants were obtained for an untreated sample (g∥ = 1.940, A∦ = 18.71 mT; g⊥ = 1.966, A⊥ = 7.63 mT). Heating the sample to 1000°C in steps while monitoring phase changes with EPR and FTIR spectra led to the following structural interpretations: 1) Vanadium (IV) occurs almost entirely as an isomorphically substituted species in the octahedral sheet of KGa-1 kaolinite; 2) during the dehydroxylation of kaolinite at about 500°C and the subsequent formation of metakaolinite, V(IV)-substituted octahedral sites are readily converted into truncated octahedra exhibiting fourfold coordination; and 3) in these highly distorted four-coordinated sites, V(IV) is metastable, being completely oxidized at about 800°C.

The surface microtopography of hematite over the course of dissolution in oxalic and citric acids was examined by in-situ and ex-situ atomic-force microscopy. In-situ imaging of the basal-plane surface of a centimeter-scale natural hematite sample immersed in 2 mM citric acid demonstrated that the basal-plane surface was relatively unreactive; rather, dissolution occurred along step edges and via etch-pit formation. Ex-situ imaging of synthetic hematite particles following batch dissolution in 1 mM oxalic acid showed similar dissolution features on basal-plane surfaces; in addition, etching along particle edges was apparent. The presence of etch features is consistent with a surface-controlled dissolution reaction. The results are in agreement with previous investigations suggesting that the basal-plane surface is relatively unreactive with respect to ligand exchange. Both in-situ and ex-situ imaging of particle surfaces can provide valuable information on the roles of surface structures and microtopographic features in mineral dissolution.

The surface charge components of 2 Georgia kaolinites of differing degrees of crystallinity (KGa-1 and KGa-2) were determined using procedures based on charge balance concepts. Permanent structural charge density (σ0) was determined by measuring the surface excess of Cs, which is highly selective to permanent charge sites. The values of σ0 determined were -6.3 ± 0.1 and -13.6 ± 0.5 mmol kg−1 for kaolinites KGa-1 and KGa-2, respectively. The net proton surface charge density (σH) was determined as a function of pH by Potentiometrie titration in 0.01 mol dm-3 LiCl. Correction from apparent to absolute values of σH was made by accounting for Al release during dissolution, background ion adsorption and charge balance. Lithium and C1 adsorption accounted for the remainder of the surface charge components. Changes in surface charge properties with time were measured after mixing times of 1, 3 and 15 h, the latter representing “equilibrium”. Time-dependent behavior is believed to be caused by mineral dissolution followed by readsorption or precipitation of Al on the mineral surface. Both the point of zero net charge (p.z.n.c.) and the point of zero net proton charge (p.z.n.p.c.) changed with mixing time, generally increasing. The “equilibrium” p.z.n.c. values were approximately 3.6 for KGa-1 and 3.5 for KGa-2, whereas the corresponding p.z.n.p.c. values were about 5.0 and 5.4. The p.z.n.c. results were in good agreement with previous studies, but the values of p.z.n.p.c. were higher than most other values reported for specimen kaolinite.

Monte Carlo simulations based on tested water-water, cation-water, and water-clay potential functions were applied to calculate radial distribution functions for O-O, O-H and H-H spatial correlations in the interlayer region of the two-layer hydrates of Na- and K-montmorillonite. The simulated radial distribution functions then were used to compute the total radial distribution function for interlayer water, a physical quantity that can be determined experimentally by H/D isotopic-difference neutron diffraction. The simulated total radial distribution functions were compared with that for bulk liquid water, and with a total radial distribution function determined experimentally for the two-layer hydrate of Na-montmorillonite by Powell et al. (1997). This comparison suggested that water molecules in the two-layer hydrate of montmorillonite have nearest-neighbor configurations which differ significantly from the tetrahedral ordering of nearest neighbors that characterizes bulk liquid water.

Atomistic simulations of 2:1 clay minerals based on parameterized forcefields have been applied successfully to provide a detailed description of the interfacial structure and dynamics of basal planes and interlayers, but have made limited progress in exploring the edge surfaces of these ubiquitous layer-type aluminosilicates. In the present study, molecular dynamics simulations and energy-minimization calculations of the edge surfaces using the fully flexible CLAYFF forcefield are reported. Pyrophyllite provides an ideal prototype for the 2:1 clay-mineral edge surface because it possesses no structural charge, thus rendering the basal planes inert, while crystal-growth theory can be applied to identify two major candidates for the structure of the edge surfaces. Models based on these candidate structures reproduced bulk crystal bond distances accurately when compared to X-ray data and ab initio molecular simulations, and the predicted edge surface bond distances were in agreement with those determined via ab initio simulation. The calculated surface free energy and surface stress led to an accurate prediction of pyrophyllite nanoparticle morphology, while surface excess energies calculated for the edge surfaces were always negative. These results are consistent with the observed pyrophyllite nanoparticle morphology, with the concept of negative interfacial energies, and conditions that may give rise to them including a role in the stabilization of layer-type nanoparticulate minerals. Molecular dynamics simulations of hydrated nanoparticle edge surfaces indicated five reactive surface oxygen sites on the dominant candidate edge, in agreement with a recent model of proton titration data for 2:1 clay minerals. These promising results illustrate the potential for classical mechanical atomistic simulations that explore edge surface phenomena at much greater length- and times-scales than are currently possible with computationally expensive ab initio methods.

The aqueous chemistry of water films confined between clay mineral surfaces remains an important unknown in predictions of radioelement migration from radioactive waste repositories. This issue is particularly important in the case of long-lived anionic radioisotopes (129I-, 99TcO4-, 36Cl-) which interact with clay minerals primarily by anion exclusion. For example, models of ion migration in clayey media do not agree as to whether anions are completely or partially excluded from clay interlayer nanopores. In the present study, this key issue was addressed for Cl- using MD simulations for a range of nanopore widths (6 to 15 Å) overlapping the range of average pore widths that exists in engineered clay barriers. The MD simulation results were compared with the predictions of a thermodynamic model (Donnan Equilibrium model) and two pore-scale models based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation under the assumption that interlayer water behaves as bulk liquid water. The simulations confirmed that anion exclusion from clay interlayers is greater than predicted by the pore-scale models, particularly at the smallest pore size examined. This greater anion exclusion stems from Cl- being more weakly solvated in nano-confined water than it is in bulk liquid water. Anion exclusion predictions based on the Poisson-Boltzmann equation were consistent with the MD simulation results, however, if the predictions included an ion closest approach distance to the clay mineral surface on the order of 2.0 ± 0.8 Å. These findings suggest that clay interlayers approach a state of complete anion exclusion (hence, ideal semi-permeable membrane properties) at a pore width of 4.2 ± 1.5 Å.

Compacted Na-bentonite clay barriers, widely used in the isolation of solid-waste landfills and other contaminated sites, have been proposed for a similar use in the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Molecular diffusion through the pore space in these barriers plays a key role in their performance, thus motivating recent measurements of the apparent diffusion coefficient tensor of water tracers in compacted, water-saturated Na-bentonites. In the present study, we introduce a conceptual model in which the pore space of water-saturated bentonite is divided into ‘macropore’ and ‘interlayer nanopore’ compartments. With this model we determine quantitatively the relative contributions of pore-network geometry (expressed as a geometric factor) and of the diffusive behavior of water molecules near montmorillonite basal surfaces (expressed as a constrictivity factor) to the apparent diffusion coefficient tensor. Our model predicts, in agreement with experiment, that the mean principal value of the apparent diffusion coefficient tensor follows a single relationship when plotted against the partial montmorillonite dry density (mass of montmorillonite per combined volume of montmorillonite and pore space). Using a single fitted parameter, the mean principal geometric factor, our model successfully describes this relationship for a broad range of bentonite-water systems, from dilute gel to highly-compacted bentonite with 80% of its pore water in interlayer nanopores.
