The formation of 10-nm ZnO nanopyramids using a simple synthetic route has been isolated from the reaction of Zn(OAc)2·2H2O in 1,4-butanediol followed by ripening at 90 °C. This was accomplished by establishing control over the Ostwald ripening process through the use of a carboxylic acid specific adsorbate. Using a variety of analytical methods, it is proposed that the carboxylate groups in the acetate precursor stabilize the {101} habit planes, creating septahedral shapes or nanopyramids. Particle assembly into crystallographically oriented dimers was observed with high specificity, and the association mechanism is suggested to relate to the crystal polarity and the variation in specific adsorption of the carboxylic acid to the surface facets. These materials are a candidate for biological labeling applications in living cells.

The relatively poor efficiency of phosphor materials in cathodoluminescence with low accelerating voltages is a major concern in the design of field emission flat panel displays operated below 5 kV. Our research on rare-earth-activated phosphors indicates that mechanisms involving interactions of excited activators have a significant impact on phosphor efficiency. Persistence measurements in photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) show significant deviations from the sequential relaxation model. This model assumes that higher excited manifolds in an activator de-excite primarily by phonon-mediated sequential relaxation to lower energy manifolds in the same activator ion. In addition to sequential relaxation, there appears to be strong coupling between activators, which results in energy transfer interactions. Some of these interactions negatively impact phosphor efficiency by nonradiatively de-exciting activators. Increasing activator concentration enhances these interactions. The net effect is a significant degradation in phosphor efficiency at useful activator concentrations, which is exaggerated when low–energy electron beams are used to excite the emission.

Phosphate glasses generally have lower glass-transition temperatures and greater thermal-expansion coefficients than silicate and borate glasses, and so are candidate materials for specialty glass-metal sealing applications. Phosphate glasses also have desirable optical properties (rare-earth stimulated-emission cross sections, low thermo-optical coefficients, ultraviolet transparency, etc.) and so are used as laser glasses. Recent developments of novel compositions for biomedical applications and as fast-ion conductors have also revived interest in the study of phosphate glass structures.

The structure/property relationships in simple phosphate glasses have not received nearly the attention paid to silicate and borate-based systems. This is partially due to the difficulty in preparing anhydrous compositions with more than 50-mol% P2O5. Ultraphosphate compositions (where the [O]/[P] ratio is less than 3) are highly reactive to ambient water. In addition because P2O5 sublimes at about 300°C, ultraphosphate glasses have not been studied to the extent that metaphosphate ([O]/[P] = 3) and polyphosphate ([O]/[P] > 3) compositions have.

Thin films of amorphous carbon/hydrogen, also known as diamond-like carbon or DLC, are of interest as an economical alternative to diamond in a variety of coatings applications. We have investigated the thermal stability of DLC films deposited onto tungsten and aluminum substrates via plasma CVD of methane. These films contain approximately 40 atom % hydrogen, and based on Auger spectra the carbon in the films is estimated to be approximately 60 % sp3 hybridized and 40 % sp2 hybridized. Thermal desorption, Auger, and Raman measurements all indicate that the DLC films are stable to 250–300° C. Between 300 and 500° C, thermal evolution of hydrogen from the films is accompanied by the conversion of carbon from sp3 to sp2 hybridization, and Raman spectra indicate the conversion of the overall film structure from DLC to micro-crystalline graphite or so-called “glassy” carbon. These results suggest that DLC of this type is potentially useful for applications in which the temperature does not exceed 250° C.

Samples of chemically-vapor-deposited sub-micrometer-thick films of polysilicon were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in cross-section and by Raman spectroscopy with illumination at their surface. TEM and Raman spectroscopy both find varying amounts of polycrystalline and amorphous silicon in the wafers. Raman spectra obtained using blue, green and red excitation wavelengths to vary the Raman sampling depth are compared with TEM crosssections of these films. Some films have Raman spectra with a band near 497 cm−1, corresponding to numerous nanometer-scale faulted regions in the TEM micrographs.

Diamond-like carbon films were prepared by high intensity pulsed ion beam ablation of graphite targets. A 350 keV, 35 kA, 400 ns pulse width beam, consisting primarily of carbon ions and protons, was focused onto a graphite target at a fluence of 15-45 J/cm2. Films were deposited onto substrates positioned in an angular array from normal to the target to 90° off normal. Deposition rates up to 30 nm per pulse, corresponding to an instantaneous deposition rate greater than 1 mm/sec, have been observed. Electrical resistivities between 1 and 1000 ohm·cm were measured for these films. XRD scans showed that no crystalline structure developed in the films. SEM revealed that the bulk of the films contain material with feature sizes on the order of 100 nm, but micron size particles were deposited as well. Both Raman and electron energy loss spectroscopy indicated significant amounts of sp3 bonded carbon present in most of the films.

We describe the acquisition of Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectra on porous silicon (PS) samples that emit visible light. Spectra were acquired in both ex situ experiments (after exposure to air) and in situ experiments (with the PS covered either with the hydrofluoric acid electrolyte used in the formation process or water). Our results generally show a correlation of blue-shifted PL with increased oxidation. In one set of ex situ experiments, however, we observed an inconsistency in the shift of the wavelengthof maximum luminescence intensity for PS samples that exhibit oxygenated character in the Raman spectra. A higher anodization current density produced a red shift in the PL spectra in one experiment, while chemical dissolution of the PS by hydrofluoric acid produced the well-known blue shift in the other case. In two in situ experiments, we observed very weak and red-shifted PL for a PS sample immersed in HF (compared to the same sample measured later in air) while in another we immersed air-exposed PS in water and observed a 15-fold increase in PL intensity along with a blue shift in the luminescence maximum.

The kinetics of hydrolysis of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane and di-t-butyldimesitylcyclodisiloxane in tetrahydrofuran solution have been determined and compared to hydrolysis rates of silica defects. In the presence of sufficient excess witer, the first-order rate constant of the cyclotrisiloxine, k= 3.8 × 10−3 min is similar to the rate constant, k = 5.2 × 10−1 min, of the disappearance of the D2 Raman silica defect band it has been proposed to model. Limited hydrolysis rate data for the cyclodisiloxane suggests that it hydrolyzes at least four times faster than does the cyclotrisiloxane. These data are consistent with rate data available for silica crack growth and support the assignment of highly strained siloxane bonds at the crack tip to cyclodisiloxanes. Infrared spectra determined for the cyclodisiloxanes lend further support to this model.
