Targeting weed patches for site-specific herbicide applications potentially represents cost savings for operators, reduction in environmental herbicide effects, and increased efficiency of weed control. An experiment was initiated in a no-till corn field in Ontario, Canada, in 1998 and was continued in rotation with no-till soybeans in 1999. Weeds were intensively scouted, and distribution maps of the most common weeds (field horsetail, spiny sowthistle, dandelion, and common lambsquarters) were generated for both years. A prescription map for each plot was made using the weed density maps. Treatment decisions were based on a weed threshold value of 1 shoot m−2. Four herbicide treatments were compared: a conventional broadcast, a site-specific application targeting weed patches only, and two combinations of broadcast and site-specific applications. Treatments were applied using a direct-injection sprayer. Efficacy of weed control and yield were compared among treatments. In 1998 and 1999 there were no differences in the level of weed control or yield among treatments. The average percent area sprayed was reduced as much as 26% in the site-specific treatment in 1998 and up to 59% in the site-specific and broadcast combination treatments in 1999. For those species present in the field, patches ranged from highly aggregated to completely random, and patch stability ranged from very stable to very unstable over the 2 yr.

Summary
In transitioning from the analysis of RFID systems technology to actual deployment considerations of specific sites, the first area confronting project managers is the need to assess the range of other RF applications that may be operating at the same unlicensed frequencies.
A critical part of preparing for RFID system implementations is planning to support the various RFID applications infrastructures that may be implemented. Specifically, the opportunity to leverage a common IT infrastructure for supply chain, pedigree-tracking, and location-tracking RFID services promise higher return from investments in these technologies. One example is to consider levera-ging a wireless data (WiFi) network as the back-haul for RFID readers. Another would be to analyze the costs and benefits of combining RTLS applications with the same WiFi infrastructure, rather than using stand-alone systems for both. At a minimum, a gap analysis is required, in order to assess systems operating across the unlicensed spectrum that might interfere with the performance of RFID systems, or vice versa.
Introduction
Wal-Mart and the Department of Defense's announcement in 2003 mandating their suppliers to implement RFID tagging for all goods supplied to them caused a flurry of panic and speculation on how best to implement this requirement. Other agencies, including the FDA and corporations, have followed suit, with varying timelines and deployment plans. The area of passive RFID is more mature than that of active RFID with respect to the level of standardization and test data.

Outbreak patterns of Douglas-fir tussock moth, Orgyia pseudotsugata (McDunnough), over western North America historically appear to be synchronous, particularly in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and northern Idaho. Populations of the insect increase to outbreak and collapse in a variable cycle, averaging 9 years between peaks. A review of all outbreaks suggests repeated, widespread, nucleopolyhedrosis viral epizootics are responsible for the collapse of the population and, hence, the cycle. The virus appears to survive in the soil between outbreaks and to be carried incidentally to foliage where it is occasionally consumed by larvae. Ingestion of a single particle is probably sufficient to cause infection. Populations of the moth increase until density reaches the point where larvae to larvae infection is established. The viral inoculum builds rapidly following that point and spreads widely so that distant populations at all densities become infected, and collapse in the same year. The epizootic continues for another year. Then foliage contamination disappears, and populations reach their lowest densities before starting the cycle again.
