We use new neutron scattering instrumentation to follow in a single quantitative time-resolving experiment, the three key scales of structural development which accompany the crystallisation of synthetic polymers. These length scales span 3 orders of magnitude of the scattering vector. The study of polymer crystallisation dates back to the pioneering experiments of Keller and others who discovered the chain-folded nature of the thin lamellae crystals which are normally found in synthetic polymers. The inherent connectivity of polymers makes their crystallisation a multiscale transformation. Much understanding has developed over the intervening fifty years but the process has remained something of a mystery. There are three key length scales. The chain folded lamellar thickness is ∼ 10nm, the crystal unit cell is ∼ 1nm and the detail of the chain conformation is ∼ 0.1nm. In previous work these length scales have been addressed using different instrumention or were coupled using compromised geometries. More recently researchers have attempted to exploit coupled time-resolved small-angle and wide-angle x-ray experiments. These turned out to be challenging experiments much related to the challenge of placing the scattering intensity on an absolute scale. However, they did stimulate the possibility of new phenomena in the very early stages of crystallisation. Although there is now considerable doubt on such experiments, they drew attention to the basic question as to the process of crystallisation in long chain molecules. We have used NIMROD on the second target station at ISIS to follow all three length scales in a time-resolving manner for poly(e-caprolactone). The technique can provide a single set of data from 0.01 to 100Å-1 on the same vertical scale. We present the results using a multiple scale model of the crystallisation process in polymers to analyse the results.

Robot navigation is a large area of research, where many different approaches have already been tried, including navigation based on visual memories. The Sparse Distributed Memory (SDM) is a kind of associative memory based on the properties of high-dimensional binary spaces. It exhibits characteristics, such as tolerance to noise and incomplete data, ability to work with sequences and the possibility of one-shot learning. Those characteristics make it appealing to use for robot navigation. The approach followed here was to navigate a robot using sequences of visual memories stored into a SDM. The robot makes intelligent decisions, such as selecting only relevant images to store, adjusting memory parameters to the level of noise and inferring new paths from the learnt trajectories. The method of encoding the information may influence the tolerance of the SDM to noise and saturation. This paper reports novel results of the limits of the model under different typical navigation problems. The SDM showed to be very robust to illumination and scenario changes, occlusion and saturation. An algorithm to build a topological map of the environment based on the visual memories is also described.

Summary
Abstract
Reasoning about quantum systems has gained prominence due to a big potential in applications such as information processing, security, distributed systems, and randomized algorithms. This fact has attracted research in formal reasoning about quantum states, programs, and processes. On the other hand, temporal logics have proved to be successful in the verification of classical distributed systems and security protocols. In this chapter we extend exogenous quantum propositional logic with temporal modalities, considering both linear and branching time. We provide a weakly complete Hilbert calculi for the proposed quantum temporal logics and study their SAT and model-checking problems.
10.1 Introduction
Reasoning about quantum systems has gained prominence due to their potential applications in information processing, security, distributed systems and randomized algorithms. This has attracted research in formal reasoning about quantum states (see for instance van der Meyden and Patra 2003b, a; Mateus and Sernadas 2006; Chadha et al. 2009; Caleiro et al. 2006) and quantum programs (cf. Knill 1996; Sanders and Zuliani 2000; Abramsky and Coecke 2004; D'Hondt and Panangaden 2004; Altenkirch and Grattage 2005; Selinger and Valiron 2005; Baltag and Smets 2006; Baltazar et al. 2007; Chadha et al. 2006, 2007; Baltazar et al. 2008). On the other hand, formal methods have proved to be successful in design and verification of classical distributed systems and security protocols (e.g., Clarke and Wing 1996; Meadows 2003). Herein, we present branching and linear temporal logics for reasoning about evolution of quantum systems composed of a fixed finite set of qubits.

Frequently, mathematical structures of a certain type and their morphisms fail to form a category for lack of composability of the morphisms; one example of this problem is the class of probabilistic automata when equipped with morphisms that allow restriction as well as relabelling. The proper mathematical framework for this situation is provided by a generalisation of category theory in the shape of the so-called precategories, which are introduced and studied in this paper. In particular, notions of adjointness, weak adjointness and partial adjointness for precategories are presented and justified in detail. This makes it possible to use universal properties as characterisations of well-known basic constructions in the theory of (generative) probabilistic automata: we show that accessible automata and decision trees, respectively, form coreflective subprecategories of the precategory of probabilistic automata. Moreover, the aggregation of two automata is identified as a partial product, whereas restriction and interconnection of automata are recognised as Cartesian lifts.
