Sediments from Rapid Lake document glacial and vegetation history in the Temple Lake valley of the Wind River Range, Wyoming over the past 11,000 to 12,000 yr. Radiocarbon age determinations on basal detrital organic matter from Rapid Lake (11,770 ± 710 yr B.P.) and Temple Lake (11,400 ± 630 yr B.P.) bracket the age of the Temple Lake moraine, suggesting that the moraine formed in the late Pleistocene. This terminal Pleistocene readvance may be represented at lower elevations by the expansion of forest into intermontane basins 12,000 to 10,000 yr B.P. Vegetation in the Wind River Range responded to changing environmental conditions at the end of the Pleistocene. Following deglaciation, alpine tundra in the Temple Lake valley was replaced by a Pinus albicaulis parkland by about 11,300 14C yr B.P. Picea and Abies, established by 10,600 14C yr B.P., grew with Pinus albicaulis in a mixed conifer forest at and up to 100 m above Rapid Lake for most of the Holocene. Middle Holocene summer temperatures were about 1.5°C warmer than today. By about 5400 14C yr B.P. Pinus albicaulis and Abies became less prominent at upper treeline because of decreased winter snowpack and higher maximum summer temperatures. The position of the modern treeline was established by 3000 14C yr B.P. when Picea retreated downslope in response to Neoglacial cooling.

Sediments of Balsam Meadow have produced a 11,000-yr pollen record from the southern Sierra Nevada of California. The Balsam Meadow diagram is divided into three zones. (1) The Artemisia zone (11,000–7000 yr B.P.) is characterized by percentages of sagebrush (Artemisia) and other nonarboreal pollen higher than can be found in the modern local vegetation. Vegetation during this interval was probably similar to the modern vegetation on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada and the climate was drier than that of today. (2) Pinus pollen exceeded 80% from 7000 to 3000 yr B.P. in the Pinus zone. The climate was moister than during the Artemisia zone. (3) Fir (Abies, Cupressaceae, and oak (Quercus) percentages increased after 3000 yr B.P. in the Abies zone as the modern vegetation at the site developed and the present cool-moist climatic regime was established. Decreased fire frequency after 1200 yr B.P. is reflected in decreased abundance of macroscopic charcoal and increased concentration of Abies magnifica and Pinus murrayana needles.

Approximately half of the variation in wellbeing measures overlaps with variation in personality traits. Studies of non-human primate pedigrees and human twins suggest that this is due to common genetic influences. We tested whether personality polygenic scores for the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) domains and for item response theory (IRT) derived extraversion and neuroticism scores predict variance in wellbeing measures. Polygenic scores were based on published genome-wide association (GWA) results in over 17,000 individuals for the NEO-FFI and in over 63,000 for the IRT extraversion and neuroticism traits. The NEO-FFI polygenic scores were used to predict life satisfaction in 7 cohorts, positive affect in 12 cohorts, and general wellbeing in 1 cohort (maximal N = 46,508). Meta-analysis of these results showed no significant association between NEO-FFI personality polygenic scores and the wellbeing measures. IRT extraversion and neuroticism polygenic scores were used to predict life satisfaction and positive affect in almost 37,000 individuals from UK Biobank. Significant positive associations (effect sizes <0.05%) were observed between the extraversion polygenic score and wellbeing measures, and a negative association was observed between the polygenic neuroticism score and life satisfaction. Furthermore, using GWA data, genetic correlations of -0.49 and -0.55 were estimated between neuroticism with life satisfaction and positive affect, respectively. The moderate genetic correlation between neuroticism and wellbeing is in line with twin research showing that genetic influences on wellbeing are also shared with other independent personality domains.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Developmental psychophysiological research is a relatively young field that is rapidly expanding partly because sophisticated, cost-effective technology now allows researchers to collect physiological data much more efficiently and effectively. This volume of developmental psychophysiology reflects both the newness as well as the growth of the field. As alluded to by many of the authors included in this volume, researchers collecting valid psychophysiological data in children face challenges that are magnified when compared to the collection of these same data in adults. However, developmental psychophysiologists are not alone in addressing these challenges as we can readily draw upon the experiences from specialists working in other related fields.
The fields of psychology and education have also contributed to our general knowledge about effective methods of assessing children. Notably, the number of texts written on behavioral and neuropsychological assessment of children is plentiful, and we can apply this knowledge to assessment of psychophysiological information as well. For example, the recent editions of assessment of children (Sattler 2001, 2002) comprehensively discuss skills necessary for test administrators to have in order to successfully assess children. Some of these skills include effective listening, building rapport with the child, and how to handle difficult behaviors and individual temperaments. A researcher who develops these assessment skills discussed by psychologists, neuropsychologists, and education professionals, along with the technical skills necessary for obtaining the desired psychophysiological measurements will be much more successful in obtaining reliable and valid research data.

Killer whale (Orcinus orca) encounters from commercial pelagic trawlers as well as other types of vessels have been documented in several regions of the northeast Atlantic; however, very little published information is available regarding such encounters in mackerel (Scomber scombrus) and herring (Clupea harengus) fisheries, in the waters between northern Scotland and Norway. Mackerel and herring are the two main fish species targeted by the Scottish pelagic fleet, primarily during October to March and June to September, respectively. Encounters with killer whales were recorded during January and February 2006 by observers on a pelagic trawler fishing for mackerel in this area. These recent data, along with historical records collected since 2000, demonstrate the existence of frequent encounters between commercial pelagic trawlers and killer whales. We describe the foraging behaviour displayed by the whales during fishing operations. Killer whales approached the vessels during retrieval of the net, and remained there until this was completed. They were sometimes sighted during steaming and towing, although there was no observed contact with the boat or net at these times. There is no evidence that the presence of killer whales reduced the amount of fish caught by the trawlers or that killer whales ever become entangled in the nets. We suggest that, during the mackerel fishing season, the whales may obtain a significant proportion of their daily energy requirements from this source.

Error trials are associated with faster responses than correct trials in simple discrimination tasks suggesting that errors result from impulsive responding. We investigated the relationship between error negativity (Ne/ERN), an event-related potential associated with error detection, and two behavioral indices of response control: response time (RT) differences between incorrect and correct trials (an index of impulsivity) and percentage of errors. Response-locked ERPs were collected from 17 young adults during a visual flanker task. Consistent with previous findings, participants were significantly faster on error trials. However, participants who exhibited larger Ne/ERN peak amplitudes had significantly smaller RT differences, suggesting a more controlled response strategy. Furthermore, Ne/ERN latencies were positively associated with percentage of errors. These findings are consistent with the view that the Ne/ERN reflects the activity of a monitoring system that is closely linked to remedial systems responsible for individual differences in response control or impulsive behavior.
