Summary
I review what is known about the general trends of metallicity and element abundance ratios in Local Group galaxies, and some implications of the abundance trends for chemical evolution. The Local Group spirals show radial metallicity gradients and a mean metallicity that increases with luminosity. The composition gradients steepen with decreasing galaxy luminosity, but are roughly similar when the gradients are derived per unit disk scale length. This suggests that the evolution of the metallicity gradient is closely tied to the evolution of the baryon distribution. The M31 and MilkyWay bulges appear to have similar metallicity distributions. The high [α/Fe] in Galactic bulge stars indicates that the bulge formed rapidly. Metallicity distributions for M31 and Galactic halo stars are also similar, except that M31 has more globular clusters that are metal-rich, possibly related to its larger bulge. M33 is anomalous in that its halo clusters may be significantly younger than the Galactic halo. Local Group irregular galaxies are metal-poor, and their mean metallicity correlates with galaxy luminosity. They have low effective yields, as derived from a comparison of mean metallicity with gas fraction, and the effective yield is correlated with galaxy rotation speed (or mass). This is evidence that the irregulars have lost metals to the IGM, either through galactic winds or stripping. Dwarf ellipticals in the Local Group are also metal-poor, and follow a similar metallicity-luminosity relation. The fact that the dEs have no gas also points to loss of metals as a significant factor in their evolution.

Summary
In these lectures I present a highly opinionated review of the observed patterns of metallicity and element abundance ratios in nearby spiral, irregular, and dwarf elliptical galaxies, with connection to a number of astrophysical issues associated with chemical evolution. I also discuss some of the observational and theoretical issues associated with measuring abundances in H II regions and gas and stellar surface densities in disk galaxies. Finally, I will outline a few open questions that deserve attention in future investigations.
Introduction
The measurement of element abundances in galaxies other than our own has a roughly forty-year history, beginning with early attempts to measure helium abundances in giant H II regions in the Magellanic Clouds and M33 (Aller & Faulkner 1962, Mathis 1962) and pioneering studies of heavy element abundances from forbidden lines in extragalactic H II regions (e.g. Peimbert & Spinrad 1970, Searle 1971, Searle & Sargent 1972). Since then this field has grown tremendously, with high quality oxygen abundance data in some 40 nearby spiral galaxies and more than 100 irregular and compact dwarf galaxies. The amount of data for other elements (C, N, Ne, S, and Ar) has also improved tremendously, thanks largely to improvements in visible-wavelength detectors and the launching of spacecraft observatories, such as IUE, HST, and ISO, which have opened up the UV and IR spectral regions for spectroscopy.

I review measurements of heavy element abundances within H II regions in the Magellanic Clouds, highlighting in particular improved determinations of carbon abundances based on UV spectroscopy with Hubble Space Telescope. In general, the Magellanic Cloud H II regions show average underabundances in O, Ne, and S (relative to their Galactic counterparts) that are similar to those measured in Magellanic Cloud stars. However, comparison of stars and ionized gas shows discrepancies in C and N abundances that may be related to recently recognized mixing processes that may be operating in massive stars.

We present results from new HST imaging and spectroscopy of the peculiar Large Magellanic Cloud H II region N 44C and its ionizing star. While this nebula exhibits strong He II recombination emission, the source of the He+ ionizing photons has not been found. The UV spectrum of the ionizing star suggests an approximate spectral class of 07–08; the UV Si IV, He II, and N IV features do not show P-Cygni profiles, indicating that the ionizing star is not a supergiant. No companion star has yet been detected. Ground-based and HST optical spectroscopy of the ionized gas shows that the nebular abundances of C, N, O and He are not anomalous relative to other LMC H II regions, suggesting that no previous WR/SN companion has disappeared. Echelle spectroscopy has also ruled out the presence of high velocity shocked gas. Deep ROSAT imaging shows no X-ray point source in this location. The “fossil X-ray binary” hypothesis of Pakull & Motch (1989) remains the best explanation for the ionization of this nebula; however, convincing evidence for this hypothesis remains elusive.
