Homozygous, sethoxydim-tolerant corn was field tested at two locations in 1989 and 1990. Sethoxydim at 0.22, 0.44, and 0.88 kg ha−1 was applied to sethoxydimtolerant corn in the 3- and 7-leaf stages. None of the sethoxydim treatments caused visible injury to the sethoxydim-tolerant corn, but all treatments were lethal to a parental corn line used as a control. Sethoxydim applied at either stage of corn development had no effect on number of days to 50% silk emergence, plant height, or grain yield, compared to nontreated plants. Sethoxydim-tolerant corn was also tolerant to mixtures of sethoxydim plus other postemergence herbicides that control dicotyledonous weeds. Sethoxydim mixed with atrazine or sethoxydim applied in sequential applications with dicamba or 2,4-D gave annual grass control similar to sethoxydim applied alone. However, the sethoxydim plus bentazon treatment resulted in reduced grass control in comparison to sethoxydim alone. When the broadleaf herbicides were mixed with sethoxydim or applied as sequential treatments, broadleaf weed control was the same as when the broadleaf herbicides were applied alone. The high level of corn tolerance to sethoxydim and the broad spectrum of weed control resulting from combinations of sethoxydim plus other postemergence herbicides indicates that sethoxydim-tolerant corn hybrids could increase the options available for weed control in corn.

Korscheltellus gracilis (Grote) is a pest of red spruce and balsam fir roots in the forests of the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. The larvae feed below ground on woody and non-woody plant tissues for 2 years before maturing. It was found at 18 localities across New England and Nova Scotia during the summers of 1987 and 1988. On Whiteface Mt., New York, and Mt. Moosilauke, New Hampshire, larvae were absent to uncommon at low (500 m) and high (1300 m) altitudes, but common to abundant in red spruce – balsam fir associations at 700, 900, and 1100 m. During September 1987, larval populations were estimated at 56 000 and 312 000 per hectare in soils at 900 m on Whiteface and Moosilauke, respectively. Dense populations occurred locally, e.g. 27 larvae were recovered from a single 0.25-m2 soil pit at 900 m on Moosilauke. By June 1988, larval numbers on Whiteface and Moosilauke had declined by 51% and 72%, respectively. Seedlings and mature trees of both spruce and fir were damaged by larval feeding on bark and cambium. Seedlings were girdled; mature trees had wounds paralleling the root axes.

Highly focused Q-switched Nd:VDG fundamental (1.05 micron wavelength IR) and second harmonic (0.53 micron wavelencth green) laser pulses have been shonm to produce bulk defects in single crystal silicon at peak power densities below the vaporization threshold for the IR and below the melting threshold for the green. The defects decrease the encess rinoritv carrier lifetime as measured by junction leakage, junction step recovery, the MOS CV method, bioolar transistor current qain, and pn junction photocurrent. Green pulses have no effect on the thermal oxide dielectric strength or pn junction breakdown voltage at power densities up to the melting threshold. IR pulses begin to lower the junction breakdown voltage below the vaporization threshold and oxide dielectric strength is drastically lowered at or slightly below this threshold. The defect density decreases exponentially into the crystal with effective ranges of 0.7 micron and 1.7 microns for the green and IR respectively. IR absorption is very nonlinear near the vaporization peak power density threshold. The defects are a point type; are unchanged by a subsequent 400°C anneal; and are completely removed by an 800°C anneal. The results suggest some detrimental effects of laser processing of silicon intergrated circuits as well as some new potential applications.

The design and performance of a spherically bent crystal x-ray spectrometer with variable curvature are given. A thin crystal with the diffracting planes parallel to the face is mounted on a vacuum chuck consisting of an O-ring in a brass mounting. A controlled partial vacuum is applied behind the crystal to cause spherical deformation of the lattice. Thus, rays from a point source on the focusing circle are diffracted to a line image also on the focusing circle. The differential pressure is automatically varied such that the source-to-crystal and crystal-to-image distances are equal and constant for all Bragg angles and hence the simple θ-2θ motion of a one flat crystal spectrometer is used.
The data are accumulated by a scanning proportional counter tube placed behind a vertical slit (perpendicular to the scattering plane) located at the image line. The fixed chord length is 22 cm and the instrument is designed to scan from zero up to 120° 2θ. Crystals are easily interchanged and the automatic vacuum regulator has sufficient flexibility to allow tailoring the spherical bending to crystals of materials of various thicknesses. The resolution is easily adjusted by either the size of the x-ray source or the width of the detector slit. The performance of the spectrometer has been evaluated by characteristic x-rays produced by various samples placed in a demountable x-ray tube. The main advantages of this three-dimensional focusing instrument are the very high signal-to-noise ratio and the very low levels of x-ray flux required.
