Summary
The link between circadian rhythms and mental health is extensive. Circadian rhythm disruptions are commonly observed across many different psychiatric disorders and perturbation of the circadian system can precipitate or exacerbate psychiatric episodes. Together, this demonstrates a significant reciprocal relationship between circadian rhythm and mental health. Despite the extensive evidence linking circadian rhythms and mental health, studies are only beginning to uncover the neurobiological basis of this relationship. This chapter will provide an overview of the link between the circadian system and mental health. With the idea of a reciprocal relationship in mind, we will first discuss examples of circadian rhythm disruptions that impact mental health, such has exposure to artificial lighting, jetlag, and seasonal affective disorder. We will then discuss examples of psychiatric disorders and the circadian contribution to the pathophysiology of these disorders. Lastly, we will discuss strategies aimed at treating psychiatric disorders by targeting the circadian system.

Reducing global warming will require enacting strong climate policies, which is unlikely to happen without public support. While prior research has identified varied predictors of climate change policy support, it is unclear which predictors are strongest for the American electorate as a whole, and which predictors are strongest for Democrats and Republicans. In a nationally representative sample of registered voters (n = 2063), we use relative weight analysis to identify the strongest predictors of public climate policy support. We find that, among registered voters in the USA, the five most important predictors of climate policy support are: worry about global warming; risk perceptions; certainty that global warming is happening; belief that global warming is human-caused; and general affect toward global warming. Collectively, these five variables account for 51% of the variance in policy support. Results split by political party indicate that pro-climate injunctive norms and global warming risk perceptions are the variables that differ most between Republicans and Democrats, accounting for significantly more variance in policy support among Republicans. These findings can inform policymakers and advocates seeking to build public support for climate action.

Researchers in different social science disciplines have successfully used Facebook to recruit subjects for their studies. However, such convenience samples are not generally representative of the population. We developed and validated a new quota sampling method to recruit respondents using Facebook advertisements. Additionally, we published an R package to semi-automate this quota sampling process using the Facebook Marketing API. To test the method, we used Facebook advertisements to quota sample 2432 US respondents for a survey on climate change public opinion. We conducted a contemporaneous nationally representative survey asking identical questions using a high-quality online survey panel whose respondents were recruited using probability sampling. Many results from the Facebook-sampled survey are similar to those from the online panel survey; furthermore, results from the Facebook-sampled survey approximate results from the American Community Survey (ACS) for a set of validation questions. These findings suggest that using Facebook to recruit respondents is a viable option for survey researchers wishing to approximate population-level public opinion.
