Summary
China’s remarkable growth is seen as an economic miracle – one that is having an increasing impact on the world. Like most things in China, working in Chinese firms differs in many significant ways from working elsewhere. This case focuses on the real-life experiences of employees working in two authentic companies that represent the two dominant forms of business ownership in China: privately owned enterprises (POEs) and state-owned enterprises (SOEs). Differences between working in the two types of companies are highlighted, particularly in the areas of career development, working environment and internal communication – all important areas that impact on the lives of employees. Understanding how Chinese business leaders and supervisors interact with their employees can inform Western business performance in China, as well as in international dealings with Chinese firms.
This case compares the experiences of Mr Qing, Ms King and Mr Wong, who worked for the Heilongjiang Yanglin Soybean Group (a POE), and Mr Su, Mr Gong and Mr Tian, who worked for Harbin No. 1 Tool Manufacture Ltd (an SOE).
Company profiles
Heilongjiang Yanglin Soybean Group (POE)
Heilongjiang Yanglin Soybean Group (‘Yanglin’), established in 1996, has become the second biggest privately owned cooking oil group in the Heilongjiang province of China, occupying a leading position in the national market. The core business of this enterprise is processing non-transgenic soybeans, but it also has extensive business involvement in grain marketing, rice processing, agricultural research, livestock and poultry breeding, hotel services, tourism resorts, logistics and other fields. It has 10 subsidiaries, with 1128 employees in total. The five existing soybean-processing production lines have an annual capacity of 1.8 million tonnes of soybeans, while the world-class refined rice production line annually processes 40 000 tonnes of rice.

Summary
‘Tasty Southern Seeds’ is a small business based in Central Otago, in New Zealand’s South Island. Bianca founded the business in 2004, looking for a lifestyle change. Having been a nurse for the previous 30 years, Bianca decided to reduce her working hours to part time (one or two days per week) and became a late-blooming entrepreneur. The business grew steadily (but not without challenges), and within four years Bianca was making a net profit greater than her after-tax wages. Locals were her initial customers, but tourists – especially foreign visitors – rapidly became the majority. Eight years after establishing Tasty Southern Seeds, Bianca faced a series of interlinked questions: Should she give up her ‘day job’ and focus exclusively on Tasty Southern Seeds? Should she sell the business under the assumption that because of her age she would be slowing down soon and could not devote enough energy to keeping it growing? Or – her personal preference – should she expand into overseas markets through either exporting or franchising?
As a nurse with an interest in diets, Bianca knew the health benefits of various foods, and had created her own personal mix of sesame, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Experimenting for over 20 years, she also developed a variety of seasoning mixes, with garlic and chilli being her favourites. Friends, family and visitors all appreciated sampling her seed mixtures at her home, and it was regularly suggested that she should sell her seeds at the local farmers’ market. She decided to test the saleability of her mixture at the annual arts and crafts festival in early 2004, selling her sample of 20 packs more quickly than she had thought possible. Tasty Southern Seeds was born – although the name wasn’t created until a few weekends later, when she arranged a stand at the weekly farmers’ market. Eight years later, the stand continues to attract regular customers, but the vast majority of sales occur in increasingly widespread and diverse locations outside Bianca’s home town – hence her interest in exploring overseas expansion, or alternatively letting her business fly under someone else’s ownership.

Summary
Andrew Protheroe, the general manager of Calder Stewart Roofing (a division of Calder Stewart Industries Limited, a New Zealand construction company), arrives at his office at nine o’clock on the morning of 23 September 2009. A few minutes later, Andrew is at his desk dealing with urgent correspondence when Linda Evans, his personal assistant, enters his office to remind him that Alan Stewart, the company’s CEO, will be arriving soon for the meeting they have at ten o’clock. Andrew asks Linda to bring Robert Cash, the financial manager, to his office. Robert and Andrew have been working on a project to produce a new roofing profile (the shape that is given to metal sheets to be used in roofing), which Calder Stewart Roofing plans to launch on the market in the next few months. Demand estimates look promising enough to justify investing in new bending machines. However, both acquisition and operation costs vary depending on the machines’ origin. Andrew is confident about the figures (see Table 19.1), but he wants to review them with Robert once again before the meeting commences. The company is considering the acquisition of three additional plate-bending machines. Andrew has to decide whether sourcing from a Chinese supplier instead of from one of its traditional suppliers in Germany, Switzerland, the United States, New Zealand or Australia is best. These machines form metal sheets used for roofs. Buying a new machine would normally not be a difficult decision, but the company experienced several problems in the acquisition of a new machine from the same Chinese supplier two years ago, and the issues regarding this purchase are still fresh in the minds of managers at Calder Stewart. Andrew knows that there are more than just ‘cost calculations’ that weigh on the final decision.
