Summary

What does God want? To love. The God of thee wants us as homosexuals and wanted then for historical bar culture gay women: (1) to have each other, (2) to see each other, (3) to love each other, but more importantly (4) to see the other, especially to see the other in ourselves as an other, in contrast to the self, by which, then, the self can be defined. The ability to see the homosexual as something other than the sinner was only available for most women in the gay women's bar.

“I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach.” I love thee in the dirt as I pick you up from the straight male assault or rape. I love thee as I straighten your tie, the butch who has had the cop thrust his hands down her shirt and grab her breasts, taunting her, and saying, “So, you're a man, right?” I love thee as I bail you out of jail for being a gay woman and for loving me, or my community, enough to simply stand as one of us. I love thee in the way I keep the bar community alive with my presence, I love thee in the way that I tell straight people that this is a women's bar in 1950s in East LA and making it so. I love thee as I create space for thee, and make a possible we out of you and me.
