Summary

Social media and electronic communication are ubiquitous in the 21st century, and they have transformed the way that libraries reach out to their patrons, especially students. At a time when many people question the relevance of libraries since so much information is available immediately on the internet, it is especially important for libraries to have a strong presence where students are already spending their time to remind them of the resources, services and other great reasons they should visit. Art and design libraries in particular can make their electronic communications visually stunning with the rich images available in their collections. However, for a message to be received and understood effectively, repetition through multiple channels is always the best strategy. For that reason, libraries need to have customized and well conceived marketing plans to engage target audiences using numerous methods. The chapters in this section offer strategies and recommendations to promote the library to art and design students through marketing, social media and websites as an integral resource for their research and art practice.
