Summary

The final part of this book examines some broader aspects of optimum wave energy system design and how various design decisions can be impacted by the control strategy employed. Chapter 13 begins with a focus on force and amplitude constraints and how they can be optimally traded off, from a control perspective, to maximize energy capture. The first part of Chapter 14 examines broader aspects of the WEC geometry and shows how the optimal device shape is sensitive to the control algorithm employed, suggesting that both control and geometry need to be designed concurrently, rather than sequentially. A similar message is conveyed in the latter part of Chapter 14, which examines the sensitivity of an optimal WEC farm layout to the array control strategy employed. Again, a strong interaction between optimal layout and control is evidenced, especially for closely spaced devices.
