Source: Reported figures are from the U.S. censuses of 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880, and from the Massachusetts censuses of 1855, 1865, and 1875. Interim years are extrapolated on the assumption of constant arithmetic annual increases between censuses. Figures are for all races. (See discussion, Appendix C, Section 1.)
