Summary
… we want to have pure and whole personalities … like Hitler's. He and his friends in the struggle seem to us like a gift from the God of past ages when races were still pure, men were greater, minds less deceived.
Grossdeutsche Zeitung, May 2, 1924The national-socialist revolution does not only mean that a party with sufficient strength takes power; this revolution means a total revolution in our German existence … Heil Hitler!
Martin HeideggerSo when I appear as a kind of shamanistic figure, or allude to it, I do it to stress my belief in other priorities and the need to come up with a completely different plan for working with substances. For instance, in places like universities, where everyone speaks so rationally, it is necessary for a kind of enchanter to appear.
Joseph BeuysI wanted to take in everything that was forbidden during Hitler's reign.
Joseph BeuysMore than is realized, the artist's attitude toward his audience, emblematic of the kind of reciprocity he wants to establish with it, is the fundament of his art. Indeed, aesthetic originality bespeaks an “original” attitude toward the audience. To put this in a more extreme and telling way, every art projects its own audience. Its character is determined by the fantasy of the audience the artist imagines he is relating to in the process of making the art.
