Summary
This book would not have been possible without help from many people and institutions. It first took shape as a doctoral dissertation submitted to the University of Cambridge in December 1982. I am grateful to the Master and Fellows of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, for electing me into a Research Fellowship in 1981 and for making generous contributions towards the costs of research. I would like to thank the Government of West Bengal, India, for awarding me a State Scholarship in 1978 which supported the first three years of my studies on the subject. The Smuts Memorial Fund at Cambridge provided a grant for research and field-work in India and Bangladesh in 1979–80. The government of Bangladesh graciously gave permission to consult sources in the Bangladesh Secretariat Record Room and district record offices. Dr Sirajul Islam introduced me to these archives. It was a great pleasure to be a visitor at the Department of History, University of Dacca, where I received warm hospitality from everyone. The Home Department of the West Bengal government allowed me to use a large collection of Confidential Political files. Mr Debabrata Bandyopadhyay, Mr A.B.M.G. Kibria, Mr R.N. Sengupta and especially Mr S.P. Mallik helped make research in the subcontinent a success. A grant from the Nuffield Foundation enabled me to return to India in 1983 to look at new material which had become available.
