Summary

Over the sixteen years in which this book has been in preparation, I have accumulated debts of gratitude to an ever-increasing number of individuals and institutions.

For their tireless and invariably courteous assistance in the location, procurement and use of source material, I am indebted to the archivists, librarians and staff of the British Library; Cambridge University Library; the College of Ripon and York St John Library; the Cornwall Record Office; the Dean and Chapter Library, Exeter; the Devon and Cornwall Record Society Library; Devon County Library; the Devon Record Office; Exeter City Library; the Exeter Record Office; Exeter University Library; the Public Record Office; the library of Trinity College, Cambridge; and the York Minster Library. I am grateful also to Mr F. L. Harris for kindly loaning his transcript of the Antony churchwardens' accounts.

Amongst the many constructive suggestions and comments received from fellow-labourers in the field of Reformation studies, I have particularly appreciated those from Dr C. S. L. Davies, Dr J. Guy, Dr A. Kreider, Dr N. Orme and Dr W. J. Shiels. I wish especially to record my thanks to Professor J. A. Youings, who supervised the doctoral research on which this book is based and who has consistently encouraged me to secure its publication; her advice and support I have greatly valued. I am most grateful to Mr R. F. Whiting, Mrs C. I. Whiting and Mr D. Batten for the photographs in this book, and to Mr J. Lindley for his assistance with the maps.
