The Cartulary

Summary

The first section of the cartulary is missing and an attempt was made to render the corresponding section of the Table of Contents illegible. Parts of it can, however, be read under the ultra-violet lamp and these are given below in translation. These items have been numbered 1-11, no. 12 is the first item in the second (first surviving) section of the cartulary, p. 2].

Here begins the calendar of bulls, charters, letters of bishops and other records which are contained in this register, and which may easily be found in it by the accordance of the numbers written by the items of the calendar, with those which are written at the head of the items in the register.

  • (1) I. First, the cause of the subrogation of the chapter of canonesses in the place of the canons who were previously at Canunleghe. Also a Bull assenting to the subrogation and empowering the bishop in the matter, and a letter of the bishop and chapter after the action.

  • (2) II. A Bull confirming the action of the bishop and chapter.

  • (3) III. Another Bull conferring the goods … to the abbess and convent.

  • (4) IV. Another Bull of the same nature.

  • (5) V. Another Bull … exactions of seculars.

  • (6) VI. Another Bull …

  • (7) VII. Another Bull … rents and privileges …

  • (8) VIII. Another Bull …

  • (9) IX. A process showing how the canons departed from the monastery.

  • (10) X. Another process of the same nature.

  • (11) XI. The subrogation of the canonesses in the place of the canons.

Date: 1285-6 [Bishop Quivil acknowledged the receipt of six hundred marks from the countess on 26 August 1285 (Reg. Quivil, 318)].

Letter by Peter, bishop of Exeter, and the chapter, in which are mentioned : Matilda de Clare, countess of Gloucester and Hertford and patroness of Leghe Canonicarum, Pope Martin IV, the Order of St. Augustine, six hundred marks sterling, two hundred pounds sterling a year, three canons, four canons and forty [canonesses.]
