Summary

This chapter presents the transcripts of two interviews dealing with slavery in Kano. It presents abridged versions of Yusufu Yunusa interviews with Malam Isyaku, an ex-slave; and Malam Idrisu, a descendant of a nineteenth-century Kano title holder. Yunusa interviewed Idrisu and Isyaku at a time when scholarly debate on slavery and the slave trade had shifted from a focus on the consequences of the Atlantic slave trade on Africa to a debate on the nature of slavery in the continent. Idrisu and Isyaku also suggest that there were avenues for the slave's advancement in Kano. In particular, the testimonies indicate that while many slaves could rise to important positions in the household and in society through hard work, bravery, and sexual union with male masters, others could buy their freedom. Finally, the testimonies point to various ways in which Islam influenced the character of slavery in Kano.
