Summary

The proliferation of understandings of both sexual consent and politics has persisted in South Africa into the present day. This multiplicity is a constitutive feature of postcoloniality. It continues to provide challenges for individual women and for feminist movements who confront the extremely high levels of sexual violence in contemporary South Africa. This book demonstrates that South Africa’s crisis of sexual violence has important roots in the nineteenth century, and perhaps before. While it does not offer an easy solution to this crisis, it underlines the importance of framing rape as a political as well as a social problem.
