Summary

This chapter will present an overview of Italian anarchism and syndicalism during the era of liberal Italy and the fascist era (1870–1945) and will conclude with a discussion of the contrasting period after 1945. It will examine the personalities, the political culture, the conviviality and artistic manifestations, the social geography, gender relations, and emotional contexts, and the doctrines of Italian anarchism and syndicalism. This chapter employs a synoptic historical overview in order to understand how the anarchists retained a strong presence in the quotidian life of the Italian left in the era of liberal Italy even as the socialists were predominant and explains their relative marginalization after 1945.
