Summary

In this chapter, the authors use data from their study of teaching materials and sex education practices in Sweden to present a critique of norm-critical pedagogy. They argue that, despite its progressive genealogy, the norm-critical approach to sex education contains inherent tensions. They assert that this approach focuses on privileged identities, neglects the challenges of competing power structures, and contributes to a "neo-assimilatory framework" that privileges certain (liberal) sexual values.
