This article describes the limiting distribution of the extremes of observations that arrive in clusters. We start by studying the tail behaviour of an individual cluster, and then we apply the developed theory to determine the limiting distribution of $\max\{X_j\,:\, j=0,\ldots, K(t)\}$ , where K(t) is the number of independent and identically distributed observations $(X_j)$ arriving up to the time t according to a general marked renewal cluster process. The results are illustrated in the context of some commonly used Poisson cluster models such as the marked Hawkes process.

Let f be the density function associated to a matrix-exponential distribution of parameters $(\boldsymbol{\alpha}, T,\boldsymbol{{s}})$ . By exponentially tilting f, we find a probabilistic interpretation which generalizes the one associated to phase-type distributions. More specifically, we show that for any sufficiently large $\lambda\ge 0$ , the function $x\mapsto \left(\int_0^\infty e^{-\lambda s}f(s)\textrm{d} s\right)^{-1}e^{-\lambda x}f(x)$ can be described in terms of a finite-state Markov jump process whose generator is tied to T. Finally, we show how to revert the exponential tilting in order to assign a probabilistic interpretation to f itself.

Consider the coupon collector problem where each box of a brand of cereal contains a coupon and there are n different types of coupons. Suppose that the probability of a box containing a coupon of a specific type is $1/n$, and that we keep buying boxes until we collect at least m coupons of each type. For $k\geq m$ call a certain coupon a k-ton if we see it k times by the time we have seen m copies of all of the coupons. Here we determine the asymptotic distribution of the number of k-tons after we have collected m copies of each coupon for any k in a restricted range, given any fixed m. We also determine the asymptotic joint probability distribution over such values of k, and the total number of coupons collected.

Measuring and quantifying dependencies between random variables (RVs) can give critical insights into a dataset. Typical questions are: ‘Do underlying relationships exist?’, ‘Are some variables redundant?’, and ‘Is some target variable Y highly or weakly dependent on variable X?’ Interestingly, despite the evident need for a general-purpose measure of dependency between RVs, common practice is that most data analysts use the Pearson correlation coefficient to quantify dependence between RVs, while it is recognized that the correlation coefficient is essentially a measure for linear dependency only. Although many attempts have been made to define more generic dependency measures, there is no consensus yet on a standard, general-purpose dependency function. In fact, several ideal properties of a dependency function have been proposed, but without much argumentation. Motivated by this, we discuss and revise the list of desired properties and propose a new dependency function that meets all these requirements. This general-purpose dependency function provides data analysts with a powerful means to quantify the level of dependence between variables. To this end, we also provide Python code to determine the dependency function for use in practice.

For a quadratic Markov branching process (QMBP), we show that the decay parameter is equal to the first eigenvalue of a Sturm–Liouville operator associated with the partial differential equation that the generating function of the transition probability satisfies. The proof is based on the spectral properties of the Sturm–Liouville operator. Both the upper and lower bounds of the decay parameter are given explicitly by means of a version of Hardy’s inequality. Two examples are provided to illustrate our results. The important quantity, the Hardy index, which is closely linked to the decay parameter of the QMBP, is deeply investigated and estimated.

We study Bose gases in $d \ge 2$ dimensions with short-range repulsive pair interactions at positive temperature, in the canonical ensemble and in the thermodynamic limit. We assume the presence of hard Poissonian obstacles and focus on the non-percolation regime. For sufficiently strong interparticle interactions, we show that almost surely there cannot be Bose–Einstein condensation into a sufficiently localized, normalized one-particle state. The results apply to the canonical eigenstates of the underlying one-particle Hamiltonian.

We present a study of the joint distribution of both the state of a level-dependent quasi-birth–death (QBD) process and its associated running maximum level, at a fixed time t: more specifically, we derive expressions for the Laplace transforms of transition functions that contain this information, and the expressions we derive contain familiar constructs from the classical theory of QBD processes. Indeed, one important takeaway from our results is that the distribution of the running maximum level of a level-dependent QBD process can be studied using results that are highly analogous to the more well-established theory of level-dependent QBD processes that focuses primarily on the joint distribution of the level and phase. We also explain how our methods naturally extend to the study of level-dependent Markov processes of M/G/1 type, if we instead keep track of the running minimum level instead of the running maximum level.

An extension of Shannon’s entropy power inequality when one of the summands is Gaussian was provided by Costa in 1985, known as Costa’s concavity inequality. We consider the additive Gaussian noise channel with a more realistic assumption, i.e. the input and noise components are not independent and their dependence structure follows the well-known multivariate Gaussian copula. Two generalizations for the first- and second-order derivatives of the differential entropy of the output signal for dependent multivariate random variables are derived. It is shown that some previous results in the literature are particular versions of our results. Using these derivatives, concavity of the entropy power, under certain mild conditions, is proved. Finally, special one-dimensional versions of our general results are described which indeed reveal an extension of the one-dimensional case of Costa’s concavity inequality to the dependent case. An illustrative example is also presented.

We consider solutions of Lévy-driven stochastic differential equations of the form $\textrm{d} X_t=\sigma(X_{t-})\textrm{d} L_t$, $X_0=x$, where the function $\sigma$ is twice continuously differentiable and the driving Lévy process $L=(L_t)_{t\geq0}$ is either vector or matrix valued. While the almost sure short-time behavior of Lévy processes is well known and can be characterized in terms of the characteristic triplet, there is no complete characterization of the behavior of the solution X. Using methods from stochastic calculus, we derive limiting results for stochastic integrals of the form $t^{-p}\int_{0+}^t\sigma(X_{t-})\,\textrm{d} L_t$ to show that the behavior of the quantity $t^{-p}(X_t-X_0)$ for $t\downarrow0$ almost surely reflects the behavior of $t^{-p}L_t$. Generalizing $t^{{\kern1pt}p}$ to a suitable function $f\colon[0,\infty)\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ then yields a tool to derive explicit law of the iterated logarithm type results for the solution from the behavior of the driving Lévy process.

We study a multivariate system over a finite lifespan represented by a Hermitian-valued random matrix process whose eigenvalues (i) interact in a mean-field way and (ii) converge to their weighted ensemble average at their terminal time. We prove that such a system is guaranteed to converge in time to the identity matrix that is scaled by a Gaussian random variable whose variance is inversely proportional to the dimension of the matrix. As the size of the system grows asymptotically, the eigenvalues tend to mutually independent diffusions that converge to zero at their terminal time, a Brownian bridge being the archetypal example. Unlike commonly studied random matrices that have non-colliding eigenvalues, the proposed eigenvalues of the given system here may collide. We provide the dynamics of the eigenvalue gap matrix, which is a random skew-symmetric matrix that converges in time to the $\textbf{0}$ matrix. Our framework can be applied in producing mean-field interacting counterparts of stochastic quantum reduction models for which the convergence points are determined with respect to the average state of the entire composite system.

Nonlinear Markov chains with finite state space were introduced by Kolokoltsov (Nonlinear Markov Processes and Kinetic Equations, 2010). The characteristic property of these processes is that the transition probabilities depend not only on the state, but also on the distribution of the process. Here we provide first results regarding their invariant distributions and long-term behaviour: we show that under a continuity assumption an invariant distribution exists and provide a sufficient criterion for the uniqueness of the invariant distribution. Moreover, we present examples of peculiar limit behaviour that cannot occur for classical linear Markov chains. Finally, we present for the case of small state spaces sufficient (and easy-to-verify) criteria for the ergodicity of the process.

We consider a spatial model of cancer in which cells are points on the d-dimensional torus $\mathcal{T}=[0,L]^d$, and each cell with $k-1$ mutations acquires a kth mutation at rate $\mu_k$. We assume that the mutation rates $\mu_k$ are increasing, and we find the asymptotic waiting time for the first cell to acquire k mutations as the torus volume tends to infinity. This paper generalizes results on waiting for $k\geq 3$ mutations in Foo et al. (2020), which considered the case in which all of the mutation rates $\mu_k$ are the same. In addition, we find the limiting distribution of the spatial distances between mutations for certain values of the mutation rates.

Let $(\xi_k,\eta_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ be independent identically distributed random vectors with arbitrarily dependent positive components. We call a (globally) perturbed random walk a random sequence $T\,{:\!=}\, (T_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$ defined by $T_k\,{:\!=}\, \xi_1+\cdots+\xi_{k-1}+\eta_k$ for $k\in\mathbb{N}$ . Consider a general branching process generated by T and let $N_j(t)$ denote the number of the jth generation individuals with birth times $\leq t$ . We treat early generations, that is, fixed generations j which do not depend on t. In this setting we prove counterparts for $\mathbb{E}N_j$ of the Blackwell theorem and the key renewal theorem, prove a strong law of large numbers for $N_j$ , and find the first-order asymptotics for the variance of $N_j$ . Also, we prove a functional limit theorem for the vector-valued process $(N_1(ut),\ldots, N_j(ut))_{u\geq0}$ , properly normalized and centered, as $t\to\infty$ . The limit is a vector-valued Gaussian process whose components are integrated Brownian motions.

We study generalizations of the forest fire model introduced in [4] and [10] by allowing the rates at which the trees grow to depend on their location, introducing long-range burning, as well as a continuous-space generalization of the model. We establish that in all the models in consideration the expected time required to reach a site at distance x from the origin is of order $(\!\log x)^{(\!\log 2)^{-1}+\delta}$ for any $\delta>0$ .

Two ensembles are frequently used to model random graphs subject to constraints: the microcanonical ensemble (= hard constraint) and the canonical ensemble (= soft constraint). It is said that breaking of ensemble equivalence (BEE) occurs when the specific relative entropy of the two ensembles does not vanish as the size of the graph tends to infinity. Various examples have been analysed in the literature. It was found that BEE is the rule rather than the exception for two classes of constraints: sparse random graphs when the number of constraints is of the order of the number of vertices, and dense random graphs when there are two or more constraints that are frustrated. We establish BEE for a third class: dense random graphs with a single constraint on the density of a given simple graph. We show that BEE occurs in a certain range of choices for the density and the number of edges of the simple graph, which we refer to as the BEE-phase. We also show that, in part of the BEE-phase, there is a gap between the scaling limits of the averages of the maximal eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the random graph under the two ensembles, a property that is referred to as the spectral signature of BEE. We further show that in the replica symmetric region of the BEE-phase, BEE is due to the coexistence of two densities in the canonical ensemble.

We clarify and refine the definition of a reciprocal random field on an undirected graph, with the reciprocal chain as a special case, by introducing four new properties: the factorizing, global, local, and pairwise reciprocal properties, in decreasing order of strength, with respect to a set of nodes $\delta$. They reduce to the better-known Markov properties if $\delta$ is the empty set, or, with the exception of the local property, if $\delta$ is a complete set. Conditions for each reciprocal property to imply the next stronger property are derived, and it is shown that, conditionally on the values at a set of nodes $\delta_0$, all four properties are preserved for the subgraph induced by the remaining nodes, with respect to the node set $\delta\setminus\delta_0$. We note that many of the above results are new even for reciprocal chains.

Let X be a continuous-time strongly mixing or weakly dependent process and let T be a renewal process independent of X. We show general conditions under which the sampled process $(X_{T_i},T_i-T_{i-1})^{\top}$ is strongly mixing or weakly dependent. Moreover, we explicitly compute the strong mixing or weak dependence coefficients of the renewal sampled process and show that exponential or power decay of the coefficients of X is preserved (at least asymptotically). Our results imply that essentially all central limit theorems available in the literature for strongly mixing or weakly dependent processes can be applied when renewal sampled observations of the process X are at our disposal.

In this paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of a random uniform parking function $\pi_n$ of size n. We show that the first $k_n$ places $\pi_n(1),\ldots,\pi_n(k_n)$ of $\pi_n$ are asymptotically independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) and uniform on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, for the total variation distance when $k_n = {\rm{o}}(\sqrt{n})$, and for the Kolmogorov distance when $k_n={\rm{o}}(n)$, improving results of Diaconis and Hicks. Moreover, we give bounds for the rate of convergence, as well as limit theorems for certain statistics such as the sum or the maximum of the first $k_n$ parking places. The main tool is a reformulation using conditioned random walks.

From the Poisson–Dirichlet diffusions to the Z-measure diffusions, they all have explicit transition densities. We show that the transition densities of the Z-measure diffusions can also be expressed as a mixture of a sequence of probability measures on the Thoma simplex. The coefficients are the same as the coefficients in the Poisson–Dirichlet diffusions. This fact will be uncovered by a dual process method in a special case where the Z-measure diffusions are established through an up–down chain in the Young graph.

It was recently proven that the correlation function of the stationary version of a reflected Lévy process is nonnegative, nonincreasing, and convex. In another branch of the literature it was established that the mean value of the reflected process starting from zero is nondecreasing and concave. In the present paper it is shown, by putting them in a common framework, that these results extend to substantially more general settings. Indeed, instead of reflected Lévy processes, we consider a class of more general stochastically monotone Markov processes. In this setup we show monotonicity results associated with a supermodular function of two coordinates of our Markov process, from which the above-mentioned monotonicity and convexity/concavity results directly follow, but now for the class of Markov processes considered rather than just reflected Lévy processes. In addition, various results for the transient case (when the Markov process is not in stationarity) are provided. The conditions imposed are natural, in that they are satisfied by various frequently used Markovian models, as illustrated by a series of examples.
