The question-title of this article contains two implicit assumptions that I find thoroughly embarrassing. The first is that secularization is some inevitable process gradually” reaching out to the far corners of the Western world. The second is that Scotland is, frankly, a backwater; secularization has reached almost everywhere else, and now is about to reach this last bastion of the old order. Very soon the fate of old-style religion will be sealed, and secularization will have achieved its final victory somewhere in the wild mountains of the Scottish Highlands.

Professional and lay articles now appearing on immigrant physicians in the U.S. leave the impression that this is a quite new problem. In fact the earliest doctors in America were foreign medical graduates (FMGs), and for a couple of hundred years after that they were the most sought after practitioners in the Colonies. American medical school graduates date only from the 1760's, and until the beginning of this century the native-trained products of proprietary medical schools were viewed with considerable distrust. Respectable doctors had at least some European training.

A world without war, a world at peace, has long haunted the thoughts of man. High among those who have brought the concept to the level of a conscious dream are leaders of the world's religions. Within the last decade there has developed around the globe, slowly and arduously, a network of religious leaders Whose declared purpose is to bring reality closer to that dream. The World Conference on Religion and Peace, the formal name of this network, has now held two world conferences, the first in Kyoto in 1970, the second in August of this year in Louvain, Belgium.

In spite of the changing fortunes of the dialogue between Marxists and Christians, there is no doubt that it remains a permanent fixture on the horizon of mankind's hopes. The publication of the four books under scrutiny here is testimony to the continuing importance of the Marxist- Christian dialogue, both as a matter of pragmatic importance to the future of man and as a matter meriting serious intellectual consideration.
