During the last few years Baker Library in Hanover, New Hampshire, has acquired, in microfilm, copies of logical and theological works by Calvinist scholastics. These works are either rare or unduly dispersed, and were much needed for any adequate study of the mind and art of Milton. I have therefore been able to draft a monograph, ‘Form and Faith,’ a study in the basic philosophy of Milton, Downham, and Polanus. Various parts of the monograph will doubtless appear in philosophical, theological, and literary journals; but being thus in their turn dispersed they may not easily come to the attention of Renaissance scholars.

In the introductory section of La Música en la Corte de Carlos V (Barcelona, 1944), Dr. Higinio Anglés published a series of documents from the Archives at Simancas which showed that a Chapel composed exclusively of Spanish musicians was attached to the Royal Court of Spain as early as 1526 and existed simultaneously with the Emperor's Flemish Chapel from that time. The Spanish Chapel was established by the Empress, Isabel of Portugal, the wife of Charles V, who acted as his regent during his many and prolonged absences from Spain. While the Flemish Chapel regularly accompanied the Emperor on his journeys, the chapel of the Empress belonged to her household and remained permanently in Spain. It is interesting to note the name of Antonio de Cabezón in the first list of cantors of this chapel. The name of the great composer of keyboard music appeared continuously among the musicians attached to the Royal Court until he died in 1566.

This, the most recent in the series of recordings of English music which have been issued by the British Council, is one of the most interesting. It is made up of twelve 12-inch 78 rpm. shellac records pressed by Decca. The entire set consists of music by the virginalists with the following composers represented; Byrd, Bull, Phillips, Farnaby, Gibbons, Tomkins, Peerson, Weelkes and Robert Johnson. Several short anonymous works are also included.

A document preserved in the Barbieri Collection at the National Library provides us with the following information concerning sums paid to the choir boys in the first third of 1561. No list appears in the ‘Roolos’ for that year.
