La « transition démographique » comme cadre théorique

Après la seconde guerre mondiale, l'ensemble des démographes s'appuyait, dans un effort de systématisation, sur une classification des stades d'une évolution démographique que l'étude historique des populations occidentales avait dégagée. Ils estimaient pouvoir retrouver les caractéristiques de cette évolution dans tous les pays et surtout espéraient pouvoir s'en aider pour les projections démographiques des pays qui approchaient de leur indépendance politique et dont l'état de développement général appelait de rapides progrès. Peu à peu, cependant, la confiance trop entière qu'on avait accordée à ces vues s'est effritée pour faire place à des réserves de portée variée; ces dernières, sans compromettre l'utilité fondamentale de la systématisation acquise, soulignèrent la nécessité d'introduire de multiples nuances dans les généralisations proposées.
