The formation and evolution of the heavy neutron-capture elements (Z > 37) are to date not well understood. Therefore, abundance and galactic chemical evolution (GCE) studies of these heavy elements may carry key information to this open question. Strontium (Sr) is one of the two heavy elements (Sr and Ba) that show intrinsically very strong absorption lines even in extremely metal-poor stars (and remains detectable at low spectral resolution). Hence, the 4077 Å Sr II line provides a unique insight into the behaviour of heavy neutron-capture elements at all metallicities and resolutions. Here the focus is on strontium, its 3D and NLTE (non-local thermodynamic equilibrium) corrections, as well as chemical evolution.

In general, most of the studies of terrestrial-type planet formation typically use ad hoc initial conditions. In this work we improved the initial conditions described in Ronco & de Elía (2014) starting with a semi-analytical model wich simulates the evolution of the protoplanetary disk during the gas phase. The results of the semi-analytical model are then used as initial conditions for the N-body simulations. We show that the planetary systems considered are not sensitive to the particular initial distribution of embryos and planetesimals and thus, the results are globally similar to those found in the previous work.

Gravity waves, which propagate in radiation zones, can extract or deposit angular momentum by radiative and viscous damping. Another process, poorly explored in stellar physics, concerns their direct interaction with the differential rotation and the related turbulence. In this work, we thus study their corotation resonances, also called critical layers, that occur where the Doppler-shifted frequency of the wave approaches zero. First, we study the adiabatic and non-adiabatic propagation of gravity waves near critical layers. Next, we derive the induced transport of angular momentum. Finally, we use the dynamical stellar evolution code STAREVOL to apply the results to the case of a solar-like star. The results depend on the value of the Richardson number at the critical layer. In the first stable case, the wave is damped. In the other unstable and turbulent case, the wave can be reflected and transmitted by the critical layer with a coefficient larger than one: the critical layer acts as a secondary source of excitation for gravity waves. These new results can have a strong impact on our understanding of angular momentum transport processes in stellar interiors along stellar evolution where strong gradients of angular velocity can develop.

We present three studies that use supernova (SN) environments within host galaxies (HGs) to constrain SNe properties. These studies are ordered from an indirect approximation to a direct determination of the environmental parameters of the SN. We find correlations between the galactocentric distance and several parameters measured from both the SN light-curve (LC) and the host galaxy spectroscopy. We are able to recover and strength previous results pointing to a sequence on the progenitor mass of different SN types. We also confirm no significant difference in the elemental abundances of the environment where different SN types exploded, measured with a more powerful technique such as Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS).

We studied the statistical properties of the magnetic fields of OB stars based on the recent measurements. As the statistically significant characteristic of the magnetic field we use the rms magnetic field of the star ${\cal B}$. The distribution functions f(${\cal B}$) of magnetic fields of OB stars are evaluated. The function f(${\cal B}$) has a power-law dependence on the ${\cal B}$ with an index of about 2-3 and a fast drop below ${\cal B}$ = 100 − 300 G. We proposed that the compact regions with strong local magnetic fields can contribute to the global magnetic field of O stars.

PAHs are among the most commonly proposed and popular candidates for DIB carriers. We present a critical assessment of the PAH-DIB model in view of the progress and the advances that have recently been achieved through a series of complementary studies involving astronomical observations of DIBs, laboratory simulation of interstellar analogs for PAHs (neutrals and ions), space exposure experiments of PAHs, theoretical calculations of PAH spectra and the modeling of diffuse and translucent interstellar clouds. What have we learned from these complementary studies? What are the constraints that can now be derived for the PAHs as DIB carriers? What are the strengths and the weaknesses of the PAH model to account for the DIBs?

The advent of Fermi is changing our understanding on the radio and γ-ray emission in active galactic nuclei. Unlike pre-Fermi ideas, BL Lac objects are found to be the most abundant emitters in the γ-ray band. However, since they are relatively weak radio sources, most of their parsec-scale structure and their multifrequency properties are poorly understood and/or have not been investigated in a systematic fashion. Here we are analyzing the radio and γ-ray emission properties of a sample of 42 BL Lacs selected with no constraint on their radio and γ-ray emission. Thanks to new Very Long Baseline Array observations at 8 and 15 GHz for the whole sample, we discuss their parsec-scale structure. Parsec-scale radio emission is observed in the majority of the sources at both frequencies. The comparison between our results in radio and gamma-ray bands points out the presence of a large number of faint BL Lacs showing “non-classical” properties such as low source compactness, low core dominance, no gamma-ray emission.

Weak line emission originating in the photosphere is well known from O stars and widely used for luminosity classification. The physical origin of the line emission are NLTE effects, most often optical pumping by far-UV lines. Analogous lines in B stars of lower luminosity are identified in radially pulsating β Cephei stars. Their diagnostic value is shown for radially pulsating stars, as these lines probe a much larger range of the photosphere than absorption lines, and can be traced to regions where the pulsation amplitude is much lower than seen in the absorption lines.

Highly non-coplanar extrasolar systems (e.g. Upsilon Andromedae) and unexpected spin-orbit misalignment of some exoplanets have been discovered. In Libert and Tsiganis (2011), a significant increase of the mutual inclination of some multi-planet systems has been observed during the type II migration, as a result of planet-planet scattering and/or resonant interactions between the planets. Here we investigate the effect of the inclination damping due to planet-disk interactions on the previous results, for a variety of planetary systems with different initial configurations and mass ratios. Using the damping formulae for eccentricity and inclination provided by the numerical hydrodynamical simulations of Bitsch et al. (2013), we examine their impact on the possible multiple resonances between the planets and how the growth in eccentricity and inclination is affected.

A fast moving infrared excess source (G2) which is widely interpreted as a core-less gas and dust cloud approaches Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) on a presumably elliptical orbit. VLT Ks-band and Keck K′-band data result in clear continuum identifications and proper motions of this ∼19m Dusty S-cluster Object (DSO). In 2002-2007 it is confused with the star S63, but free of confusion again since 2007. Its near-infrared (NIR) colors and a comparison to other sources in the field speak in favor of the DSO being an IR excess star with photospheric continuum emission at 2 microns than a core-less gas and dust cloud. We also find very compact L′-band emission (<0.1″) contrasted by the reported extended (0.03″ up to ∼0.2″ for the tail) Brγ emission. The presence of a star will change the expected accretion phenomena, since a stellar Roche lobe may retain a fraction of the material during and after the peri-bothron passage.

Fullerenes and their derivatives are amongst the most stable carbonaceous species known and have therefore been proposed as ideal candidates to carry some of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). Evidence for these species in space first came from a few DIBs that have been tentatively identified with electronic transitions of C60+; in recent years, infrared observations have furthermore revealed fullerenes in a variety of circumstellar and interstellar environments. With the presence of the fullerene family in space established, we review what is known about cosmic fullerenes and their derivatives and what role they could play as potential DIB carriers.

Using multi-band photometry we train a forward model to emulate the colour-change due to temperature and extinction for stars. We simultaneously solve for the astrophysical parameters (APs) extinction A0, temperature Teff and distance modulus μr in a Bayesian framework for individual stars. We introduce an HRD prior to account for previous knowledge about the distribution of stars in the temperature- absolute magnitude plane (see also Bailer-Jones 2011). This allows us to infer distance information. We obtain the full three dimensional PDFs of all the stars in a field, allowing us to determine extinction-distance profiles for a given line of sight.

High-quality data from space-based observatories present an opportunity to fit stellar models to observations of individually-identified oscillation frequencies, not just the large and small frequency separations. But such fits require the evaluation of a large number of accurate stellar models, which remains expensive. Here, we show that global-mode oscillation frequencies interpolated in a grid of stellar models are precise and accurate, at least in the neighbourhood of a solar model.

I have combined data from sky surveys in the UV to the mid-IR, along with radio and X-ray data, to identify the most luminous QSOs in the Universe. The primary sky surveys were the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) 7th Data Release QSO Catalog, which provides unambiguous broad-line QSO classification and robust redshifts, and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-IR catalog, because a large percentage of QSO bolometric luminous emerges in the IR. Out of the 100,000 SDSS/WISE QSOs, we find 140 (< 0.2%) with bolometric luminosity greater than 2×1014Lo, with redshifts ranging from about 1.7 to 5. The most luminous QSO found has Lbol ≈7×1014Lo. Merger-based galaxy evolution models predict that the host galaxies of such sources at peak QSO luminosity are undergoing a short-lived phase of extreme AGN feedback and massive star-formation activity after a major merger. Upcoming sub-mm observations with the new Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-millimeter Array (ALMA), for a subset of the sample, will soon reveal crucial host galaxy properties of this unique sample.

We present survey results obtained from the UBVRI optical photometric follow-up of 19 bright core-collapse SNe during 2002-2012 using 1-m class optical telescopes operated by the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Science (acronym ARIES), Nainital India. This homogeneous set of data have been used to study behavior of optical light/color curve, and to gain insight into objet-to-object peculiarity. We derive integrated luminosities for types IIP, Ibc and luminous SNe. Two peculiar type IIP events having photometric properties similar to normal IIP and spectroscopic properties similar to sub-lumnious IIP have been identified.

We present the first results of the estimation of gravity and effective temperature for some poorly studied chemically peculiar stars that were recently observed with the spectropolarimeter ESPaDOnS at CFHT. We have analyzed the spectra of HD71030, HD95608 and HD116235 to determine their radial velocity, vsini and the average abundance of several chemical species. We have also analyzed our results to verify for possible vertical abundance stratification of iron and chromium in these stars.

We construct axisymmetric mass models for dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies in the Milky Way to obtain realistic limits on the non-spherical structure of their dark halos. This is motivated by the fact that the observed luminous parts of the dSphs are actually non-spherical and cold dark matter models predict non-spherical virialized dark halos on sub-galactic scales. Applying these models to line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles along three position angles in six Galactic satellites, we find that the best fitting cases for most of the dSphs yield not spherical but oblate and flattened dark halos. We also find that the mass of the dSphs enclosed within inner 300 pc varies depending on their total luminosities, contrary to the conclusion of previous spherical models. This suggests the importance of considering non-spherical shapes of dark halos in dSph mass models.

Optical afterglow observations hold the indirect key to type-Ic Supernovae associated with Gamma Ray Bursts. In several cases where there is no spectroscopic confirmation available, presence of the supernova is inferred from the red bump seen in late afterglow light-curves. We do extensive afterglow modeling to extract the supernova contribution as residue. We compare the residual lightcurves of Supernovae associated with GRB041006, GRB030329, GRB050525A and GRB090618.

Stability boundaries of radial pulsations in massive stars are compared with positions of variable and non-variable blue-supergiants in the spectroscopic HR (sHR) diagram (Langer & Kudritzki 2014), whose vertical axis is 4 log Teff - log g(= log L/M). Observational data indicate that variables tend to have higher L/M than non-variables in agreement with the theoretical prediction. However, many variable blue-supergiants are found to have values of L/M below the theoretical stability boundary; i.e., surface gravities seem to be too high by around 0.2-0.3 dex.

We discuss observations of Sagittarius A* with NACO@VLT in K-band and recent synchronous observations with NIRC2@Keck II and OSIRIS@Keck I in L′-band and H-band, respectively. The variability of Sagittarius A* in the near infrared is a continuous one-state process that can be described by a pure red-noise process having a timescale of a few hours. We describe this process and its properties in detail. Our newest observations with the Keck telescopes represent the first truly synchronous high cadence data set to test for time variability of the spectral index within the near infrared. We discovered a time-variable spectral index that might be interpreted as a time lag of the L′-band with respect to the H-band.
