Abstract

There is no respite in the production of philosophical door-stoppers. Despite our animadversions in April 1995, at times it seems that 14, Gordon Square is submerged beneath an avalanche of Companions, Readers, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Guides, and now a new series: The Big Questions. All worthy stuff, but rarely original or idiosyncratic or even interesting, geared as so much of it is to the textbook market.
