Single Atom Fabrication with Beams and Probes
Single atom fabrication with beams and probes. This issue of MRS Bulletin presents advances in electron- and ion-beam-based atomic fabrication on surfaces, in layered materials, and in three dimensions. The cover shows an artistic rendering of scanning transmission electron microscope-based single atom level manipulation and fabrication of 2D materials. Electron beams can be used to cut or remove material and control the position of atoms and dopants on or within a lattice. Image by Stephen Jesse, Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
