The paper presents the first detailed study on systematics, otolith structure and biology of Diaphus coeruleus, from the south-eastern Arabian Sea. The closely related and co-inhabiting species D. coeruleus and D. watasei are distinguished on the basis of morphometric, meristic and otolith characters. Analysis of gut content revealed that these fishes mainly feed on deep sea squids and shrimps. Six maturation stages of gonads are identified in males (immature, quiescent, mature, ripe, spawning and spent) and five stages (immature, quiescent, mature, ripening and spawning stages) in females. Overall sex ratio deviated in favour of males (1 male: 0.2 female) and the mean fecundity was 2150 ± 353 eggs. The length-weight relationship shows an overall isometric growth in males with N = 76 and b = 3.13 and for females with N = 17 and suggests negative allometric growth (b = 1.719). Otolith length (LO) and otolith weight (WO) are positively correlated to standard body length (LS) and body weight (BW).

Diel vertical migration of the cutlassfish Trichiurus japonicus larvae were investigated by consecutive 24-h collections at 3-h intervals at a station in the central Seto Inland Sea, Japan in June and September. Only one larva was collected in June 2017, while 224 and 40 larvae were collected in September 2016 and 2017, respectively. Larvae were present only at depths of ≥ 11 m during the day, whereas they were present at depths of 1, 6, 11 and 16 m during the night. Migration was observed in larvae in which swim bladder formation was completed. A similar pattern, namely nocturnal occurrence at shallow depths only of the developed larvae, was observed in another 24-h survey, suggesting that the swim bladder regulates the upward movement of larvae at night.

Although common in the Mediterranean, the morphological and biological characteristics of the moray eel Muraena helena are largely unknown. This study, based on 310 specimens caught using a longline at a depth of 50–100 m, addresses this knowledge gap for northern Tunisia, which is a stronghold of the species. There were significantly more males than females, with a sex ratio of 1:1.5. The number of vertebrae between individuals were variable, especially abdominal and caudal vertebrae (range 56–72; 70–84, respectively). Overall, the total number of vertebrae was less variable (138–146 ± 3.6 SE) and similar between males and females. The length-length relationship recorded for M. helena is provided for the first time, with the pre-anal length (paL), pre-dorsal length (pdL) and the head length (hL) growing faster than the total length (TL). According to the weight-length relationship (WLR), positive allometric growth was established for males (b = 3.6), females (b = 3.46) and combined sexes (b = 3.54). The relative condition factor (CF) did not show significant differences between seasons. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) indicated a significant difference between the seasons for females, whilst the hepatosomatic index (HSI) highlighted a significant difference between seasons for both males and females.

Grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) of the North-east Atlantic are protected at designated European Marine Sites (Special Areas of Conservation, SACs) typically during their reproductive periods and in the UK at Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). As a mobile marine species, grey seals spend other parts of their annual life cycle in non-designated habitat. There is limited information on individual grey seal movements in south-west England. Citizen science photo identification (PID) revealed the movements of 477 grey seals at a regional scale (54 haul-outs up to 230 km apart) for over a decade. Reconstructed movements showed considerable individual variability. Four SACs were linked to up to 18 non-designated sites and two SSSIs in Cornwall were linked to a maximum of 41 non-designated sites. Observations support the value of existing SSSIs at both the well-connected West and North Cornwall sites. Thirteen Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) were visited by grey seals from four SACs and two SSSIs in Cornwall. As a mobile species, grey seals could be included in English MPA management plans. The application of functional linkage from SACs and SSSIs, informed by the movements evidenced in this research, could aid management efforts. This analysis reveals grey seal movements occur across a complex network of interconnected designated and non-designated sites that need to be managed holistically for this species for which the UK has a special responsibility.

Urbanization and intense vessel traffic in coastal areas are obstacles for right whales when selecting breeding and calving grounds. Human activities might be the main cause for the recently observed drop in right whale sightings along the south-eastern coast of Brazil. Information concerning the biology and the activities that can potentially affect the presence of individuals along the coast are essential for management purposes, as well as for the recovery of the species stocks after a period of whaling pressure. This study correlated the occurrence of right whales in the northern limit of the breeding ground in the South-western Atlantic Ocean with local geomorphology, degree of urbanization and oceanographic features to better identify suitable areas for use by these whales. The study area was divided into 14 sub-areas based on local coastal geomorphology and discharge of large rivers. The following five ranking criteria were applied to each sub-area: presence of whaling stations and whaling activity in the past; presence and activity of ports; protection from swell, coastal slope and composition of the bottom substrate. The sub-areas that offered conditions conducive to the presence of right whales received higher scores. The proposed criteria were validated by overlapping the ranking scores with the records of right whales sighted in each sub-area. In south-eastern Brazil, protected areas with sandy bottom and gentle slope were associated with more sightings of female-calf pairs. The criteria can be used as a primary diagnostic indicating suitable sub-areas for right whales in poorly known breeding grounds.

Phenotypic differentiation among fish populations may be used for management of distinct stocks and helps in conserving biodiversity. We compared morphometric and meristic characters of the anchovy Anchoa januaria from shallow semi-closed bays between the south-eastern (Tropical, 23°S) and southern (Subtropical, 25°S) Brazilian coast. We hypothesized that differences between habitats and environmental conditions result in morphological divergence between conspecific populations. Fish size did not differ significantly between the two areas. Significant differences in the meristic and morphological characters were detected for individuals between the two areas, with specimens from the Subtropical region having significant larger head height, pectoral fin length and eye diameter compared with those from the Tropical region. Conversely, specimens from the Tropical region had significantly larger maxillary length, mouth length and body height than those from the Subtropical region. The number of rays for the dorsal and pectoral fins were higher for the specimens from the Subtropical region, whereas for the anal fin was higher for individuals from the Tropical region. Different morphological groups between the two regions were depicted by principal component analysis and discriminant function analysis, which suggest that morphological divergence is occurring. Local environmental influences and the lack of genetic interchange are likely to be the causes of such divergence. This is facilitated by the low tolerance of this species to marine waters that prevents connectivity between these stocks/populations.

Coastal environments are faced with constant habitat modification and biodiversity loss due to human occupation. Estuaries are considered to be highly productive and shelter heterogeneous habitats such as mangrove forests, tidal creeks, tidal mud flats and sandy beaches, which are important for the maintenance of natural resources. The present study aims to evaluate how different shallow juvenile habitats (sandy beaches, mangrove shoreline habitats and dense macrophyte habitats) influence fish during their early life stages in a tropical estuary of Brazil. Monthly samples using a beach seine net from July 2012 to June 2013 were collected in eight shallow areas of the São Mateus River estuary. The fish assemblage comprised mainly juvenile and small-sized fish, which included ecologically and commercially important species. Small recruits of Atherinella brasiliensis and Ctenogobius boleosoma were most abundant in the autumn, while Rhinosardinia bahiensis and Centropomus undecimalis were highly abundant during the winter. The water salinity recorded in the mid and lower estuarine portions was the most important variable for the distribution of A. brasiliensis and Sphoeroides spengleri, whereas Anchovia clupeoides, C. undecimalis, C. parallelus and Gobionellus oceanicus were positively correlated with the water depth of the upper estuarine portion. The fish species T. paulistanus, Genidens genidens and Achirus lineatus were related to the water turbidity in the upper portion. Thus, the heterogeneous shallow water habitats (and their associated environmental parameters) of the São Mateus River estuary are potential nursery grounds for the early life stages of a variety of fish species, which highlights the importance of these areas for local biodiversity management.

We examined the diet of pelagic juveniles of Trachurus japonicus in the surface layer in April, and subsequent demersal juveniles in the near bottom layer during May to June of the East China Sea (ECS) in 2005, 2008 and 2009. Diet composition of the pelagic juveniles showed a significant difference between 2005 and the other two years. That is, they preyed mainly on Paracalanus parvus s.l. and occasionally on Calanus sinicus in 2008 and 2009, while they fed mainly on Corycaeus affinis in 2005, partly corresponding with the between-year difference in prey densities. The demersal juveniles depended heavily on the fifth copepodites and females of C. sinicus which store lipids in the body, i.e. high-energy food for the juveniles, without a significant inter-annual difference. The markedly low occurrence of P. parvus s.l. and C. sinicus, which are considered to be energetically more favourable than C. affinis, from the stomach of the pelagic juveniles in 2005 corresponded with the lowest growth rates of the pelagic juveniles in the three years. Potentially, this resulted in the lowest observed recruitment level of the demersal juveniles for the ECS in 2005 over these three years.

Reproductive biology of Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) was studied based on samples from commercial catches in M'diq Bay, Morocco. Females predominated in the total catch (54%), their size at first maturity being 19.19 ± 0.43 cm TL. A minimum landing size (MLS) of 21 cm is suggested. The oocyte size frequency distribution and histological analysis confirmed that S. colias is a species with an indeterminate fecundity. The batch fecundity was estimated as 18,452–131,642, with a mean of 60,022 oocytes. The relative batch fecundity was 157–360, with a mean of 279 eggs g−1.

The gut analysis of 26 fish species caught in the deep waters of the Eastern Ionian Sea showed that crustaceans were a substantial resource for fish found in deep- water environments, comprising 37 crustacean taxa. Among all species examined, 77% included crustaceans in their guts. Dendrobranchiata/Caridea shrimps were the most frequent crustacean prey found in the guts of almost all examined fishes, with high values of relative abundance (N%). Season (summer, autumn) and fish behaviour (demersal, benthic) were not found to affect the diet of the examined fish species. Galeus melastomus could be considered to be a separate case showing the most diverse diet comprising all the crustacean groups. Differences in the proportion of the main crustacean categories consumed by the examined fish species were observed. The low richness and preference towards specific crustacean taxa or different crustacean species could be considered as an indication of interspecific competition for the same food resource in the oligotrophic waters of the Eastern Mediterranean. The occurrence of different crustacean taxa in the gut of some species through the analysed seasons, could be related to differences in prey availability or to selective preference for certain prey which in turn could be linked to different energetic requirements for growth and reproduction of predators.

Sampling at four salmon aquaculture sites along the west coast of Scotland has identified short-lived aggregations of planktonic hydrozoans (>280 individuals m−3), here termed blooms. Several such blooms were linked with increases in gill pathology and mortality in caged fish. Two types, Obelia sp. and Lizzia blondina, were found to cause blooms regularly and often concurrently. Species composition of hydrozoan populations and fluctuations in population sizes were spatially and temporally heterogeneous, with adjacent sites (within 30 km of one another and with similar oceanic exposure) experiencing no correlation between species composition and population density. Blooms appeared temperature-mediated, with all identified blooms by Obelia sp. and L. blondina taking place in water above 12 °C; however, temperature alone was not found to be predictive. Blooms were not significantly associated with change in salinity, water clarity, or photoperiod. Due to the apparent lack of broadly applicable predictors, we suggest that localized, targeted sampling and examination of planktonic hydrozoan populations is required to discern the presence or absence of a bloom. It is likely that many blooms have historically caused harm in salmon aquaculture while remaining unrecognized as the root cause.

Age and growth parameters were estimated for the deep-sea cardinalfish (Epigonus crassicaudus) from sagittal otoliths collected between 2012 and 2015 onboard commercial fishing vessels from the South-east Pacific off Chile between 33°04′S and 41°46′S. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters (VBGP) were estimated from assumed annual otolith growth zone counts. The verification of the first annulus of sagittal otoliths was determined by examining in detail daily micro-increments. These data helped inform the interpretation of the annual growth zones from transverse otolith sections. The von Bertalanffy growth model estimated to length-at-age data were asymptotic length (L∞) of 34.1 cm fork length (FL), a growth coefficient (k) of 0.1 cm/year and a t-zero (t0) of −0.85. The maximum ages observed were 67 and 65 years for female and male fish, respectively.
