Significant differences were found in the flavour characteristics of stewed minces from lambs raised on either lucerne or phalaris pastures. The meat from lambs raised on lucerne had a more intense ‘sharp’ and ‘sickly’ aroma and flavour and a significantly lower flavour acceptability. These characteristics were not significantly alter when the lambs were starved for up to 3 days before slaughter. However, the flavour of meat from lambs transferred from lucerne to phalaris 7 or 14 days before slaughter was not significantly different from that of lambs grazed solely on phalaris.

Merino wethers grazed pure stands of rape, vetch or oats for 76 days in 1969 and 35 days in 1970. A laboratory taste panel found that the flavour characteristics of meat from these sheep differed significantly from those of meat from similar sheep grazing ryegrass-white-clover pasture or native pasture.

Grazing on rape often produced a meat with a nauseating aroma and flavour, and with significantly lower acceptability of flavour than the pastures. There was no significant difference in the acceptability of flavour of meat from pasture and vetch fed sheep, although vetch gave an intense meaty flavour. Meat from sheep grazing oats possessed a pungent odour and flavour, but with a flavour only slightly, but significantly, less acceptable than that of meat produced on pasture.

Sets of data were selected from 66 nutritional experiments on crop plants with large beneficial effects of at least two of the nutrients, nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, and the data, the logarithms of the data, and the reciprocals were statistically analysed. It was shown that the beneficial effects of the nutrients were additive much more often on the reciprocal scale, than when a logarithmic transformation, or none at all, was used.

During the period 1968–71, 417 ewes of various breeds were radiographed for pregnancy diagnosis during the period 60–95 days of gestation.

Pregnancy per se was diagnosed by observing the presence or absence of a definite uterine outline with accuracies of 77, 97 and 100% of the period 60–70, 71–80 and 81 + days of gestation. During the periods 60–70, 71–80, 81–90 and 91 + days of gestation foetal numbers were diagnosed with an accuracy of 88, 94, 99 and 99 % respectively. Breed, size of ewe and number of foetuses carried did not affect the accuracy of diagnosis.

An experiment is described which investigated for a period of 12 years the effects of four methods of basic cultivation – ploughing, rotary cultivating, cultivating and discing – on crop yields in a four-course rotation of winter wheat, sugar beet, spring barley followed by either potatoes (on one half of each main plot) or ley (on the other). The cultivations were carried out at two different times and each crop was grown at two levels of fertilizer.

The method of cultivation had no effect on the yield of barley when weeds were controlled by chemicals but, in the absence of such control, the three deeper working methods of cultivation gave higher yields than discing towards the end of the experiment. In the case of wheat, ploughing generally led to the highest yields and rotary cultivating led to higher yields than either cultivating or discing after the ley. Discing led to relatively low yields, particularly with cultural methods of weed control at the lower level of fertility.

With the sugar-beet crop, yields of sugar were higher in all rotations after ploughing than after cultivating or discing, irrespective of the method of weed control and although yields after rotary cultivating were similar to those after ploughing in the second rotation they did not consistently exceed those after cultivating or discing in the other two rotations. With discing, in the absence of chemical weed control the yields were markedly reduced in the last rotation period. Ploughing also led to the highest yields of potatoes but there were no consistent differences between the other methods and an apparent trend to lower yields after discing in the absence of chemical methods of weed control had not reached significance by the end of the experiment.

It was concluded that ploughing was a more reliable method of seedbed preparation, not only with regard to consistency of performance under different conditions but also with regard to depth of working and extent of weed control.

Ploughing appeared to be of particular value with the root crops used but the other methods led to satisfactory yields of the cereals grown after roots.

Two fistulated rams were infused through the rumen cannulae with acetic acid or sodium acetate for 4 consecutive days. This infusion has caused a significant drop in the daily feed intake and in the concentrations of rumen ciliate protozoa. The holotrich protozoa were the most susceptible, whereas entodinia were the least sensitive, to the reducing effect of acetic acid or sodium acetate. Decreasing the daily feed intake by 30% has caused little or no change in the concentrations of rumen ciliate protozoa. The in vitro incubation of sodium acetate and rumen contents has resulted in a remarkable depression in the protozoal numbers. Most of this decrease occurred after 5 h of incubation. The addition of acetic acid or sodium acetate to washed suspensions of mixed populations of rumen ciliate protozoa has decreased the in vitro volatile fatty acid production. It is suggested that both the low pH and acetate, ion were responsible for the reduction in the protozoal numbers in the rumen of rams infused with acetic acid or sodium acetate. The effect of acetate on the ciliate protozoa could be an explanation of the diurnal changes in the concentrations of various protozoal groups usually observed in the rumen of the host animal.

Kloka spring wheat grown on a sandy-loam soil was given 50, 100, 151 or 201 kg N/ha as fertilizer, was irrigated during drought or not irrigated, and was sprayed with CCC (2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride) or not sprayed. Samples, taken approximately weekly from brairding to heading and less frequently to maturity measured the production of dry matter. The dried samples were analysed for percentage N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Na and the uptakes of these were calculated to measure the effects of treatments on the composition of the crop and the weights of nutrients it contained.

Increasing amounts of fertilizer-N up to 151 kg N/ha increased the maximum weight of straw without irrigation and up to 201 kg N/ha with irrigation; similarly, maximum weights of ears were with 100 kg N/ha without irrigation and 151 kg N/ha with irrigation. The maximum weight of straw was at flowering and of ears at maturity. Irrigation increased yields of straw and ears, more with the two larger than with the two smaller amounts of fertilizer-N. Spraying with CCC decreased the yield of straw, and did not affect the yield of ears.

Increasing amounts of fertilizer-N increased percentage nutrients in the green crop and in the straw, and of N, P and Mg in the ears. Effects of irrigation and spraying with CCC on composition differed between nutrients and between ears and straw, sometimes increasing, sometimes decreasing, and sometimes having no effect, on percentage in dry matter.

Increasing fertilizer-N increased the maximum weight of N, K, Ca and Na in the crop. P and Mg increased with up to 151 kg N/ha, but was no more with 201 kg N/ha. Maximum weight of N, P, Mg and Na was found at or near maturity, of K at heading and of Ca at flowering.

Groups of mature Merino ewes selected on the basis of either large or small bodysize were differentially fed during a pre-experimental period to produce subgroups of high and low body condition. These levels of body condition were maintained for 2 weeks before mating and for the first 5 weeks of gestation. Thereafter, the four subgroups grazed together until lambing.

Big ewes had more multiple ovulations than small ewes (14/41 υ 6/53; P < 0·01), and there was a significant linear regression of ovulation rate on body size. Body condition was positively related to the incidence of multiple ovulations, but the regression of ovulation rate on body condition at mating failed to reach significance. Body weight was significantly related to both ovulation rate and the incidence of multiple ovulations, and proved to be a more effective predictor of ovulation rate than either body size or condition.

These results make it clear that size and condition, the two components of body weight, each have a considerable independent influence on some aspects of reproduction, and that the precision of some experiments and the effectiveness of some production routines could be improved by considering them separately.

Three maize hybrids (Kelvedon 75A, Kelvedon 33, and Anjou 210) were grown under irrigated conditions at a wide range of density from 5·4 to 21·6 seeds/m2 at a rectangularity of 1:1. For yield of digestible dry matter at the time of silage harvest (7 October) a seed rate of 10·8 seeds/m2 (44000/acre) appeared adequate, as doubling the density to 21·6/m2 only resulted in 7% higher yield. K 33, which is a late·maturing hybrid bred for silage in south-east England (50·5–52·5 °N) produced the highest total yield of digestible dry matter due to a high yield of digestible stem. However, the dry matter % of this material would be too low for good ensilage and for a high level of feed intake. In the early grain hybrid K 75 A, 62% of the digestible dry matter was contained in the ear at the silage stage which improved the digestibility and dry matter % of the whole crop with only a 12% lower yield than K 33.

The optimum density for grain was 10·8 seeds/m2. This is a higher response to density than is believed to occur in field crops in Britain as in these experiments the seed was planted on the square and irrigation was applied at moisture sensitive stages. The parabolic relationship between grain yield and density was closely related to grain number per unit area. At 10·8 seeds/m2 all three hybrids were of similar yield and grain number per unit area. In Anjou 210 this was achieved with one large ear per plant, whilst for the two Kelvedon hybrids mean ear production was 1·34/plant but with 27% fewer grains per ear.

When an organic calcareous soil was air-dried for 2 days and re-wetted to a wide range of moisture contents, well below saturation, nitrite accumulated within 1–2 days. At the same time much nitrate was formed and more carbon dioxide was released than from soil kept moist. On further incubation of re-wetted soil for 3–5 days, the nitrite concentration decreased rapidly. Since 15N-labelled nitrate was reduced to nitrite after air-drying and re-wetting, and no nitrite was formed in autoclaved soil, nitrate was microbially reduced.

Eighty-three per cent of added 15N tracer was recovered from the soil 2 days after re-wetting to 70 % moisture, indicating that 58 ppm N had been lost; 10 ppm N of this was released as nitrous oxide. Autoclaved soil to which nitrite was added did not evolve nitrous oxide, suggesting that nitrite was reduced biologically rather than decomposed chemically.

Three other soils were treated similarly; two, which were non-calcareous, accumulated no nitrite. Fresh calcareous soils with high respiration rates and good capacities to denitrify when waterlogged are most likely to form nitrite after drying and moderate re-wetting.

Two inbred diploid lines of Secale cereale L. and their derived tetraploids were grown together with a commercial diploid and tetraploid in all possible pair combinations in a pot experiment. Comparisons between lines and varieties were made in respect to dry weight measured at 30 weeks.

The competitive effects within mixtures were not compensatory, the commercial varieties tending to increase in dry weight more than the homozygous inbred lines decreased. This gave rise to mixture means which tended to exceed their mid-constituent values.

The analysis of reciprocal differences in dry weight showed that the effects of competition between any one genotype and its associate in mixtures were constant (alpha competition), the sign and magnitude of the alpha effect being related to the pure stand values of the genotype.

The mean effect of competition was to increase the difference in dry weight between genotypes by 2·108 g for each gram by which the genotypes differed when grown alone. In each case the values for genotypes with the higher dry weight increased in mixture whereas the values for those with lower dry weights decreased.

Not surprisingly, the commercial varieties were found to be better competitors than the inbred lines, but of more interest was the ineffectiveness of chromosome doubling on competitive ability. Under the conditions of density and fertility reported here, the tetraploid inbred lines could not be distinguished from their diploid progenitors either in their competitive ability or in their reaction to increased density when grown in mixtures. The same is true for the tetraploid and diploid commercial varieties.

Results of this study show that daily intake of dry matter (DM) and digestible energy (DE) was lower for the ‘warm’ environment and ‘high’ fibre groups. Efficiency of DM utilization was also lower for these groups. However, efficiency of DE was essentially the same for both rations, being lower in the ‘warm’ group. The lower intake in the ‘warm’ environment was attributed mainly to the longer length of time that animals spent resting, which resulted also in lower growth rates. The data indicate that increasing the caloric density of feed, to compensate for reduced consumption, would make it possible to obtain proportional increases in energy intake. As interactions were negligible, this situation would apply to both environments studied.

Work that has been reported from some African countries indicates a dependence of grain yield in maize on the duration of leaf area after flowering. This paper studies maize yield in south-east England and confirms work at a similar northern latitude in Canada which has shown that considerable remobilization of photosynthate from the stem to the ear takes place during the main ear fill period.

A similar grain yield was obtained from two contrasting hybrids. In a short early hybrid, Kelvedon 75A, there was a low peak leaf area index (5·3) but the net assimilation rate was high due possibly to efficient light interception by leaves that maintained an erect posture. Stem dry matter was also low and hence in this hybrid the high reproductive/vegetative ratio shows that there has been economy in the production of leaves and stem, especially as a 48% stem loss occurred during the period of ear fill.

In contrast, in a later hybrid, Anjou 210, the final shoot dry matter was 20% higher as the peak leaf-area index of 7·7 gave slightly higher crop growth rates than K 75A. Although the remobilization of stem dry matter was similar in both hybrids it was notable that a different partition of dry matter in the ears of Anjou 210 gave a higher grain/rachis ratio.

In three experiments high quality, autumn-harvested dried Italian ryegrass and lucerne in the form of cobs and pellets and in one of these experiments in the chopped form were offered to mature castrated male sheep at a maintenance level of feeding. Only small differences were found between the physical forms of forage in digestibility of organic matter, retention of nitrogen and loss of energy in the urine, but the digestibility of crude fibre and the mean retention time of stained feed in the gut decreased with decreasing particle size. Increasing the level of feeding of cobs and of pellets from 800 g daily by three equal increments of 400 g caused a linear decline in digestibility but no difference was found between cobs and pellets in the rate of decline of digestibility. In three experiments the dried forages were offered ad libitum and in a fourth experiment a wide range of particle size was simulated by offering ad libitum five ratios of chopped and pelleted grass. Voluntary intake tended to increase as the particle size was reduced over the whole range, but there was no significant difference between the voluntary intakes of mixtures with a modulus of fineness of 4·4 or less. No difference was detected between the voluntary intake of cobs and pellets.

Three hundred and seventy-six isolates, or about 9% of the cultures collected in 1967 and 1968 from soil of permanent pasture, that, prior to 1883, supported mixed conifer and deciduous forest, were cultivated in the laboratory. Antibiotic production was detected in 27% of the cultures. Similarly, 329 isolates, or 9% of those collected in the same period from soil of permanent pasture reclaimed from tidal marsh, were grown in the laboratory and antibiotics detected in 30%. The forest soil, because it was already known to have a denser fungal population, thus had a greater antibiotic production potential than the marshland soil. There was a small increase in the number of isolates from the forest soil that produced antibiotics when those obtained in the spring were compared to those collected in the autumn. The opposite relationship was found when the marshland isolates from the two seasons were similarly compared. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the fungal populations of these soils are a parameter in the aetiology of the ill-thrift that is found in ruminants at Nappan, Nova Scotia.

Steer calves, underfed either from birth to 16 weeks of age, or from 16 to 32 weeks of age, recovered well on refeeding, but only the latter expressed compensatory growth.

Carcass characteristics (dressing percentage, carcass length, depth of muscle and fat at the tenth rib, yield and joint distribution of saleable meat, proportions of muscle, fat and bone) of steers underfed in early life were remarkably similar to those of continually grown steers when slaughtered at the same live weight, despite their greater age.

Plane of nutrition in early life had no apparent effect on the ultimate eating quality of meat (longissimus dorsi muscle) or on its connective tissue and fat content.

An experiment was conducted using 36 Hereford × Shorthorn bullocks of about 350 kg initial live weight. Winter planes of nutrition 13 December to 23 March were ‘low’ (hay only) and ‘medium’ (hay plus 1·8 kg concentrate); the former group of 18 bullocks lost on average 21·5 kg while the latter gained 26·5 kg. Each group was then stocked at 2·5 (low), 4·3 (medium) and 6·2 (high) bullocks per hectare and rotationally grazed on 10 plots, 7 of which contained H.I.-white clover mixture and the remaining 3 contained permanent pasture. Pasture digestibility and intake were determined for 16 weekly periods between early April and the end of September. Organic matter digestibility (OMD) of grazed herbage was determined in vitro on samples obtained by means of two rumen-fistulated bullocks. One gelatin capsule containing about 10 g of chromic oxide was daily administered to each bullock to estimate organic matter output. Winter feeding planes had no significant effect on OMD, and increasing the stocking rate increased herbage OMD only during the final 6 weeks. Significantly more organic matter was ingested during the grazing season by animals which had previously been fed on a low plane of nutrition. Stocking rates also significantly affected OMI. Bullocks fed on a low plane during winter were slightly more efficient subsequently in converting herbage into live-weight gain but this was a reflection of their lower average body weight; when feed efficiency was expressed on the basis of metabolic size, bullocks fed on a medium plane were more efficient in converting feed to live-weight gain. It is concluded that the higher daily gains on pasture of bullocks previously fed on a low plane is largely the result of a significantly higher feed intake by these animals.

The amino acid composition of barley grain was studied during the maturation of the grain and during germination of the mature grain. Samples of the variety Proctor, grown at two nitrogen levels in each of the years 1969 and 1970, were analysed together with one sample of Sultan grown in 1970. It was found that during maturation the proportions of glutamic acid and proline increased and that the levels of these amino acids were highest in those samples with the highest total protein content. During ripening the proportions of lysine, alanine, aspartic acid, threonine and glycine decreased. On germination the proportions of glutamic acid and proline rapidly decreased whilst aspartic acid, lysine, alanine and glycine increased.

The nutritive value of ripe barley grain is limited by its low lysine content. Whilst the germination process increases the level of lysine it is suggested that this does not increase the nutritional value of the grain due to the low level of cystine in the germinated grain.

Four experiments are described in which attempts were made to increase the number of live lambs born per ewe per unit time. In the first experiment 22 Scottish Half-bred ewes were subjected to an artificial photoperiod. This resulted in 95 % of the ewes being mated 128 days after their previous lambing. It was estimated that artificial photoperiod brought the breeding season forward by about 5 weeks. The use of 1500 i.u. Pregnant Mare Serum had no significant effect on mean litter size. In the second experiment three artificial photoperiods were compared with natural daylength. In Group 2 photoperiod was decreased rapidly on 2 April from 18 to 10 h, in Group 3 photoperiod was decreased gradually on 2 April from 24 h and in Group 4 photoperiod was decreased rapidly on 28 May from 18 to 10 h. Group 5 was the control. Median intervals from parturition to next conception for Groups 2–5 were 70, 138, 68 and 131–5 days respectively; median intervals from onset of decreasing daylength to conception were 129, 200, 83 and 118–5 days respectively. Treatments 2 and 4 significantly reduced the interval from parturition to next conception but treatment 3 was unsuccessful. The interval from onset of decreasing daylength to conception was significantly shorter for treatment 4 than for treatment 2.

In Exp. 3 an unsuccessful attempt was made to extend the natural breeding season by preventing photoperiod from increasing for 3 months after 22 December.

In Exp. 4 a similar photoperiodic pattern was used for Groups 9 and 10 (16 h photoperiod decreasing rapidly to 8 h on 18 February). The contrast was that in Group 9 most of the ‘light’ was natural, in Group 10 all the ‘light’ was artificial. This pattern was compared with the natural daylength pattern (Group 8), an equinoctial treatment (Group 11) and a short-day treatment, 8h light, 16 h dark (Group 12). The median intervals from parturition to next conception for Groups 8–12 were 194, 102, 99, 156, 155 days, respectively. There was no significant difference in this interval between Groups 9 or 10. Type of ‘light’ therefore had no influence on the median interval from parturition to next conception; but photoperiodic pattern did. A rapid increase to 16 h light followed by a rapid decrease to 8 h (Groups 9, 10) was more effective than either the equinoctial treatment (Group 11) or the short-day treatment (Group 12). The treatments imposed on Groups 11 and 12 were more effective in shortening the median interval from parturition to next conception than the natural daylength pattern (Group 8). Time of year of mating had no effect on lambing percentage.

It was concluded that the sensitivity of sheep to photo-stimulation varied directly, with time from the onset of the next natural breeding season and with the speed of photoperiodic decrease.

Results of a co-ordinated trial carried out at twenty centres indicated that performance of growing pigs (20–90 kg) was not affected by straw bedding in pens, or by small differences in the protein content of barley meal which was used as the main cereal in the diet. Also, no adverse effects were observed when cereals only were fed in the morning and an appropriately balanced compound mixture was fed in the afternoon.
