Daily striae on the shell of the scallop, Argopecten purpuratus, were used to investigate its growth in a protected population within La Rinconada Bay, near Antofagasta (2nd Region, Northern Chile), and to determine how environmental forcings control shell growth. This sclerochronological approach was useful to describe daily shell growth a posteriori. Mean shell growth rates were calculated daily between February and October 1999 from shells of six specimens harvested on 15 October 1999. A multiple regression analysis performed on shell growth and environmental data shows that a temperature increase stimulates shell growth whereas particulate organic carbon concentration might be stressful above 2.5 mg L−1. The lunar cycle might also have an effect on growth, most potent around New Moons, by synchronizing an endogenous oscillator. The age at commercial size (90 mm) was only 10–11 months in La Rinconada Marine Reserve and the von Bertalanffy growth parameters were K = 2.24 y−1 and H∞ = 117 mm. Differences in shell growth performances between this study and previous ones dealing with A. purpuratus growth may be explained by the different methods used for shell growth modelling, higher growth rate on the seabed compared to suspended cultures, and particular environmental forcings (e.g. El Niño Southern Oscillation-ENSO events). Growth performance seems better during La Niña than during El Niño events, probably because of the large temperature increase (above the highest temperatures recorded in “normal” conditions) and the decline in coastal upwelling (which affects food availability) during El Niño. La Rinconada Marine Reserve appears as a very favourable site for A. purpuratus growth, probably because of the active upwelling zone off Antofagasta. These new insights on A. purpuratus shell growth confirm the importance of La Rinconada Marine Reserve as an area supporting repopulation of endangered wild stocks and scallop aquaculture in Chile.

Catchability is crucial for the economic performance of fisheries and their management. However, in many bio-economic simulation models it is assumed to be either constant or it is largely ignored, despite the fact that it is known to vary due to technical, environmental and behavioral factors. Such variation can cause the relationship between effort and fishing mortality to be nonlinear. This paper provides evidence for the possibility of nonlinear optimizing behavior from the Dutch beam trawl fishery, provides a methodology for estimating the curvature of the resulting relation, and a simple way of implementing these processes within a bio-economic model. Moreover, it shows the influence of a nonlinear relationship between effort and fishing mortality in a model of effort management (EU long-term flatfish management plan).

Patterns of annual freshwater flows in the Murray River and recruitment of mulloway, Argyrosomus japonicus (Scianidae) were reviewed in terms of recent age structures and historical catches and CPUE. Age distributions from the nearshore marine fishery were dominated by the 1993 age class which comprised 35% and 41% of 2001 and 2002 catches, respectively. In 1993 annual freshwater inflow was 2.4 times the 25 year average. Freshwater inflow explained 28% and 35% of the variability in year class strength in the nearshore marine fishery in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Over 80% of the current South Australian commercial catch of mulloway comprises juveniles taken from the remnant estuary of the Murray River. Our results suggest that recent low levels of recruitment in South Australia's fisheries for A. japonicus may reflect low fresh water inflows since 1993. Since 2000, southern Australia has experienced the worst drought in recorded history and management strategies for this fishery must take into account effects of both environmental factors and fishing mortality on this vulnerable sciaenid population. We suggest that the population of A. japonicus located about the Murray River system is estuarine dependent, that the estuary provides important refuge for juveniles, and that strong year classes, or their absence, may be related to freshwater inflow to this environment. We also suggest that age distributions of this apex predator may provide an indicator of environmental health for the Murray River estuary.

It has been previously shown that two guilds of predators, the sea kraits and their prey, the anguilliform fish (predator themselves), are far more abundant and diverse than previously suspected in coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific area. Based on diet, foraging range, feeding rate, and population size of two sea krait species, we estimated the annual uptake of anguilliform fish around Signal Island, New Caledonia. We found that more than 4000 snakes live on this 15 ha islet and that they can take up to 45 000 fish (>1.3 t) per year, essentially from 10 fish species previously considered as rare. One third of these fish are captured on the reef flat, the two other thirds within a 17 km radius surrounding Signal Island. We suggest that the foraging areas of the different snake populations belonging to numerous islets (and the surrounding reef flats) overlap greatly.

To protect public health, the European Commission established maximum levels of certain contaminants permitted in foodstuffs. The maximum amount of lead allowed in bivalve mollusc is 1.5 µg g−1 wet weight. In the Galician Rías, which are important areas of shellfish production in Spain, high levels of lead have been detected in the commercial bivalve Dosinia exoleta (Veneridae). Given the environmental and socio-economical problems this could represent, Pb concentration was tested in D. exoleta from two Rías, and the relation of lead accumulation with body size studied in detail. Implications for fisheries management are also discussed in this paper. Results showed a strong dependence of Pb accumulation on body size, with lead concentrations increasing exponentially with shell length. Larger animals presented a 5-fold increase in lead concentrations above the maximum permitted level. The size limit (length beyond which D. exoleta should not be extracted for commercial purposes) was initially established at 40 mm; but a more comprehensive geographical study of Pb concentrations in individuals from 35 to 40 mm long revealed that this size limit was not protective enough, and 35 mm is proposed as a safer limit.

Age and growth of the brown meagre Sciaena umbra (Sciaenidae) collected (n = 532) in the north-western Adriatic Sea was studied by means of transverse otolith sections. The maximum age estimated was 19 and 16 years for males and females, respectively. The length at age estimated for each sex indicated that females attain a larger size and grow slightly faster than males. Both marginal increment analysis and edge analysis confirmed that annuli are formed once a year, with opaque zones laid down in summer (June-July). Age readings were very precise, with a percentage agreement of 98% between readers and low values of the index of average percent error (0.9%) and coefficient of variation (1.3%). Von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to age-length data, and growth parameters were estimated for males (L∞ = 44.9 cm; k = 0.27,t0 = −2.17 years) and females (L∞ = 47.2 cm; k = 0.28, t0 = -1.82 years). In both sexes of brown meagre, growth rate was high until they attain 2–3 years of age, i.e. at sexual maturity. Most of catches were obtained in late summer-early autumn. On the basis of present data, the sampled population of brown meagre mostly consisted of small fish younger than three years of age (about 90%). In addition, landings of this species in recent years largely decreased. As reported elsewhere in north-western Mediterranean, brown meagre stock in the Adriatic Sea showed clear signs of depletion, thus specific management measures for this species are urgently required.

The change in catches and mean size of one-year-old perch (Perca fluviatilis) in Lake Geneva was studied between 1957 and 2005, and related to trophic changes and average temperature. The status of Lake Geneva, assessed on the basis of total phosphorus concentrations, switched from being oligotrophic before 1960 to eutrophic, with total phosphorus concentration reaching nearly 90 µg L−1 in 1976-1979. In response to management measures, the trophic status then returned to mesotrophy in the early 2000s. Zooplankton is the main food consumed by young perch, and quantities present (annual biovolumes of zooplankton) were recorded throughout the study period. The lake water temperature was also recorded. Data obtained from perch catches and perch spawns enabled eleven strong cohorts of perch to be identified. Strong cohorts dominated the stock for three years, until they were massively caught by fishermen. Yields have fluctuated widely, increasing rapidly until 1975, and subsequently decreasing, with an exceptional decline between 1976 and 1981. During the period 1977-1981, unfavourable climatic conditions in spring were probably the main cause of this fall in perch yields. For the other periods, perch yields and the mean size of one-year-old perch were significantly correlated with trophic parameters, total phosphorus concentration and zooplankton biovolume. Correlations are higher if only strong cohorts are taken into account. As a result of the re-oligotrophication process, perch growth has been progressively reduced, age at first maturity delayed and strong cohorts become less frequent; the mean size of 0+ individuals in strong cohorts is significantly smaller than in the other cohorts, suggesting a population density effect in the context of a limited supply of zooplankton. During the study period, trophic changes in Lake Geneva have had more impact on perch growth and yield than has temperature, since no significant correlation could be detected between water temperature and perch growth.

We analysed the patterns of variation that characterize 33 catch time series of large pelagic fishes exploited by the Japanese and Taiwanese longline fisheries in the Indian Ocean from 1968 to 2003. We selected four species, the yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), the bigeye (T. obesus), the albacore (T. alalunga), and the swordfish (Xiphias gladius) and aggregated data into five biogeographic provinces of Longhurst (2001). We carried out wavelet analyses, an efficient method to study non-stationary time series, in order to get the time-scale patterns of each signals. We then compared and grouped the different wavelet spectra using a multivariate analysis to identify the factors (species, province or fleet) that may influence their clustering. We also investigated the associations between catch time series and a large-scale climatic index, the Dipole Mode Index (DMI), using cross wavelet analyses. Our results evidenced that the geographical province is more important than the species level when analyzing the 33 catch time series in the tropical Indian Ocean. The DMI further impacted the variability of tuna and swordfish catch time series at several periodic bands and at different temporal locations, and we demonstrated that the geographic locations modulated its impact. We discussed the consistency of time series fluctuations that reflect embedded information and complex interactions between biological processes, fishing strategies and environmental variability at different scales.

The biochemical composition and biometry of different Artemia salina stages were determined in four ponds of increasing salinity (M1, M2, M3 and B1) in the Sfax solar saltern (Tunisia). Results showed the dominance of saturated fatty acids, which made up 48 to 57% of total fatty acids (FAs). Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) 22:6(n-3) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 20:5(n-3) eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) represented on average only 3.1 and 4.0% of total FAs respectively. A. salina nauplii, cysts and metanauplii, in ponds M1, M2 and B1 respectively, were found to have optimal DHA/EPA ratios (>2) for use as live feed for invertebrate and fish larvae. Significant inter-pond variation in DHA/EPA levels was also recorded. The predominant FAs in Artemia were negatively correlated with both temperature and salinity. FA and protein contents were strongly affected by high temperatures (>30 °C) and probably by food sources (e.g., Dunaliella salina) (r = 0.9, n = 27). The density of Artemiasalina was positively correlated with protein content in pond B1. The high DHA/EPA ratios (1 to 3.3) found in this study indicate that Sfax Artemia could be a valuable food source for larvae in large marine hatcheries and also for some aquarium species.

At the onset of sexual maturation, European eels Anguilla anguilla exhibit high locomotor activity which may correspond to migratory restlessness. We measured activity of captive eels and determined whether it correlated with downstream runs of silver eels as well as changes in environmental factors. Groups of eels at different stages of the silvering process (yellow to silver stage) were tagged and placed in separate tanks supplied with either river or tap water. Activity was measured by means of a flat-board antenna placed vertically in the middle of the tank at the surface of the water. Wild migrating silver eels were caught in the nearby river. Activity of eels in the river water tanks increased 1 to 2 days before downstream migrating eels were caught in the trap, and concurrently with a rise in turbidity and a decrease in conductivity. Activity of eels in the tap water tank showed a different pattern, which did not correspond to downstream runs. A peak in activity corresponded to a drop in tap water pH. It is concluded that eels do show periods of high locomotor activity at the onset of migration and this could be used to predict downstream migration. Movements are triggered by changes in water composition (as opposed to changes in discharge, atmospheric pressure and lunar cycle) measured using turbidity and/or conductivity as proxies. If eels are able to detect such small changes in water conductivity (80 µS cm−1), they may use it to find their way to the estuary.

In the marine environment, small forage species can predate on, or compete with, the pre-recruits of their larger predators. The “cultivation effect” hypothesis proposes that this mechanism can slow down the recovery of depleted populations of large demersal fishes by creating Allee effects that lower their recruitment success. Using an individual based fish community model applied to the southern Benguela ecosystem, we simulate situations of potential cultivation effect on a population of shallow water hake Merluccius capensis. We search for evidence of Allee effects due to cultivation and investigate how complex trophic interactions could influence their underlying mechanisms and impact. The resilience of the shallow water hake population was measured by following the variations of the ratio R/S (the number of recruits over the number of spawners) when population size decreases and the predators and competitors of shallow water hake pre-recruits were identified. Simulations suggest that cultivation effects are likely to emerge within the fish community of the southern Benguela ecosystem. Our twelve species model emphasizes that cultivation effects result from complex influences of predation and competition on the different pre-recruit stages, whose trophic role depends on both body size and geographical distribution. For realistic linkages between forage species and shallow water hake pre-recruits, cultivation effects occurring in the limits of the southern Benguela fish community are predicted to delay population recovery by several decades. These significant delays are not characterized by a decrease of R/S at low stock size, which is the sign usually tracked when looking for Allee effects. Our study suggests that cultivation effects could play a major role in the dynamics of overexploited large demersal fish populations and pleads for the development of improved detection techniques for these processes.

The aim of this study was to quantify the efficiency of different lengths of beach seine nets for each diel period in freshwater reservoirs. Only fish older than young-of-the-year were considered. Nets of 10, 20 and 50 m length (“in-nets”) were tested in an enclosed area framed by a 200 m long net (block net). The net efficiency estimate was calculated as the ratio of fish catches with the in-net and block net divided by the ratio of their respective areas. The net efficiency estimate was significantly different between day and night catches. At night, the efficiency estimate of nets depended on the size of the fish. The efficiency estimate of a 10 m long net decreased significantly in reverse correlation with fish size. A similar trend was found when using a 20 m long net. The efficiency estimate of a 50 m long net was independent of fish size. The variance in efficiency estimate between samples with a given net length was high, but decreased with longer nets. Of five species tested, only the efficiency estimate for catching bream (Abramis brama) increased significantly with the length of net. The biomass and abundance of larger fish was generally higher at night, although especially short nets exhibited a spuriously high efficiency estimate during the day, probably due to the concentrating (chasing) effect of the hauling ropes. We therefore recommend the use of a 50 m long net, since its nighttime efficiency estimate was about 0.9 in terms of both sampling abundance and biomass. A model relating the efficiency estimate and net length was developed with the data acquired.

Eighteen spermiating males were randomly selected from a hatchery-reared stock and electronically tagged to record changes in their sperm quality parameters (spermatozoa morphology, ultrastructure and motility, ionic composition and osmolality of the seminal plasma, and sperm volume and density) during the spawning season. Stripping was performed at the beginning of March, April and May. The Barbus barbus spermatozoon has a head without acrosome, a midpiece with 4–6 mitochondria and proximal and distal centrioles, and a flagellum with the typical 9+2 pairs of microtubules. Apart from posterior width of the midpiece, morphological and ultrastructural parameters changed significantly during the reproductive season; generally by decreasing toward the end of reproductive season. Sperm volume also decreased from 0.42 in March to 0.15 ml in May, and density from 18.81 in March to 12.45 × 109 spz ml−1 in May. Osmolality (mOsmol kg−1) was 268 ± 4, 276 ± 2 and 268 ± 2 in March, April and May respectively. Chloride, sodium, calcium and potassium ion concentrations (mM) did not show significant differences between March and April (Cl−: 125.3 vs. 120.5, Na+: 75.7 vs. 69.7, Ca2+: 0.4 vs. 0.3 and K+: 84.7 vs. 84.0). The percentage of motile spermatozoa at 15 s post activation did not show a significant difference between dates, but the highest spermatozoa velocity at 15 s post activation was observed in April (91.4 ± 3.2 µm s−1) and then decreased significantly towards the end of the reproductive season (80.6 µm s−1 in May). However, lowest spermatozoa velocity was measured in March (70.4 ± 1.9 µm s−1). This study supports the hypothesis that longer spermatozoa swim faster. Within one stripping, velocity and percentage motility decreased significantly with time post activation. In conclusion, changes observed in B. barbus sperm parameters during the reproductive season, suggest there is association between such changes and spermatozoa aging processes.

The swimming, air-gaping, and agonistic behaviours of Heterobranchus longifilis (318 ± 67 mm) were examined while fish were in a fasted state under 12L:12D and variable group size (2, 5, 10 and 15 fish) in a 1000-L aquarium. Fish exhibited a predominantly nocturnal activity pattern independent of group size. A diurnal peak of activity occurred, however, at the usual feeding time. A reduction in frequency of agonistic interactions was observed in larger groups. Five fish were then observed under 72L:0D and 0L:72D. The nocturnal activity pattern remained, contrary to the diurnal peak, and was independent of the duration of illumination or darkness. These results suggest the absence of biological clock in H. longifilis, although fish may somehow be influenced by past feeding experience. Behavioural plasticity in this species may provide potential for aquaculture in northern latitudes.

In recent decades, marine reserves have been established either to protect ecosystem structure and biological diversity or to serve as management tools to counter the overexploitation of fish stocks. The Cape Roux marine protected area (MPA), in the Mediterranean Sea, was established in December 2003 for the management of artisanal fisheries and enhancement target fish stocks.

Monitoring of littoral fish assemblages (0–30 m depth) in this zone began one year after the MPA was set up. The survey was conducted at 6 stations, located inside and outside the MPA, using three methods: underwater visual census (UVC) on transects, UVC using a new fish assemblage survey technique (FAST), and experimental net fishing performed by a fisherman. The FAST indices were derived from visual censuses, performed along a random pathway, scoring species on a presence/absence basis and size on a 2-class basis. Indices were calculated seasonally, by applying “weights” according to species and size. This study presents results obtained between October 2005 and June 2007. In the protected area, the experimental fishing yielded significantly higher abundance and species richness, and the FAST method highlighted a decrease in seasonal fluctuations. These two complementary methods (UVC and experimental fishing) revealed the early changes in fish assemblages in response to protection. The FAST method employed here seems to be relevant for the study of artisanal fishery target fishes, as a low-cost and sensitive UVC method.

We investigated the global relationship between diet and morphology for 42 fish species from a medium-sized river in French Guiana and checked the influence of the species taxonomic proximity on the implication of individual morphological traits in that relation. The 42 species were classified in eight trophic guilds based on analysis of more than 4000 stomach contents. Taxonomic proximity between species was accounted for by an autoregressive model applied to original data of diet and morphology. Original and taxonomic-free data were then submitted to a Canonical Correspondence Analysis in order to detect the relationship between diet and morphology. We compared the results obtained by analyzing the original data and the corrected data. The results confirm the existence of a significant global relationship between diet and morphology. However, morphological traits responsible for that relation were different when considering the taxonomic-free data. Particularly the well known relationship between gut length and detritivory was not observed on the taxonomic free analysis. It is concluded that controlling for phylogeny is essential to the detection of relationships between diet and morphology. It is also concluded that, despite the robustness of some relationships between morphology and diet, many diets cannot be inferred by a ecomorphological approach.

An 84-day experiment assessed the combined effects of two fresh water quality levels (H: 1.71 ± 0.15 mg O2l−1 and 0.28 ± 0.01 mg l−1 total ammonia nitrogen (T-AN), L: 5.15 ± 0.07 mg O2l−1 and 0.54 ± 0.01 mg T-AN l−1) and 3 stabilized stocking densities: 24.8 ± 0.2, 74.2 ± 0.5 and 120.0 ± 0.9 kg m−3) on rainbow trout. Fish were fed using demand feeders with rewards proportional to stocking density. Mass increase was significantly affected by water quality and stocking density, being highest in H water and the lowest at 120 kg m−3. There was no significant difference in final weight between 25 and 74 kg m−3, but at 120 kg m−3 it was 27% and 19% lower in H and L water respectively than at 25 kg m−3. Feed intake (FI) from day 0–85 was significantly affected by water quality, 1.5% in H compared to 1.1–1.0 in L, but there were no significant differences in apparent feed conversion (AFC). FI was not significantly affected by stocking density but AFC was impaired, it increased with stocking density. Marked changes in fish morphology and composition were related to water quality: Condition K factor and fillet fat content were significantly higher in H than in L groups. Dorsal and pectoral fin condition was affected by stocking density and water quality: fins were significantly longer and less eroded in L groups and at low stocking density. Physiological measures were within the usual ranges, but differed between treatments. Changes in plasma osmolarity, hydromineral balance (Na+) and acid base balance (HCO3–) showed that fish were more affected by water quality than by stocking density. There was no sign of acute stress in acclimated fish as cortisol and glycemia were similar under all experimental conditions. This study highlights the importance of water quality and feeding conditions when considering the effects of stocking density on fish welfare.

Despite extensive knowledge of the genetic structure of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) populations, no studies have investigated genetic structure within early life stages, or compared such structure between such stages and (sub)adults. Using nine newly developed microsatellite loci, we investigated patterns of genetic variation and relatedness among juveniles that settled in two NW Mediterranean nursery grounds in close geographical proximity. There was no evidence for differentiation among samples at settlement (θ = -0.0010), and no significant genetic relatedness. Nevertheless, significant departures from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were detected in each sample, which could not be attributed exclusively to the presence of null alleles and to Wahlund effect. These results are compared with and discussed in relation to the genetic structure of adults described in the same area 10 years ago.

Market position and its evolution were analysed in nine key fish and cephalopod species subject to long-term changes, using the Bay of Biscay fisheries as a case study. Although such long term changes have already been documented, and in some cases shown to be related to the impacts of fishing, changes in the physical environment, or both, relatively little work has been devoted to their potential consequences in economic terms. The nature and extent of these consequences was determined in the present study by looking at the composition of the affected fish production, and the status of different fish products on the markets. We propose a methodology to characterize market position for this set of nine species. The selected species represent a significant part of the gross turnover of French fishing fleets operating in the bay. These species were characterized in terms of their potential sensitivity to fishing and changes in environmental conditions due to global warming. We separated species potentially positively (Engraulis encrasicolus and Lophius budegassa) and negatively affected (Pollachius pollachius and Lophius piscatorius) by warming. Evolution of the value of production of the nine species was then depicted using analysis of macro-economic index (production and potential consumption) and price indices. This revealed the relatively high sensitivity of domestic production to the market crisis that occurred in France in the early 1990s, compared to imported and exported products. The relative position of individual species, with respect to the market and its evolution between 1990 and 2005, was analyzed by multi-factorial analysis. Results derived from the analysis clearly distinguish two groups of species, the first characterized by higher prices (monkfish, Nephrops, sole, seabass) and the second by larger volumes available on the French market (pollack, hake, anchovy, sardine, cuttlefish). We conclude that a major part (69 to 87%) of the gross turnover associated with catches of these fish species in the Bay of Biscay remains potentially unaffected by long-term changes related to climate.

Bonamiosis is a parasitic disease (causative agent: Bonamia ostreae) affecting the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis, responsible for a drastic decline in its aquaculture production. Selective breeding programs for resistance to bonamiosis have been undertaken to counter this disease. In the present study, a 6-month cohabitation challenge experiment was performed in order to transmit the disease from wild oysters injected with the parasite to two tested families of oysters (20 and 8-month old at the beginning of the experiment, with different genetic backgrounds) originating from a selective breeding program developed by IFREMER in France. Mortalities were checked daily and ventricular heart smears were performed on dying or moribund oysters to detect the level of infection by B. ostreae. Mortality started after 4 months of cohabitation in the tested oysters. The cumulative mortalities after 6 months were 58% for the wild oysters, 9% for Family 1 (20-month old) and 20% for Family 2 (8-month old). In the dying oysters, the parasite could be detected in 67% of the wild oysters, 68% of Family 1 and 89% of Family 2. It was detected in only 11% of the surviving oysters of Family 2. The mortality and the level of infection by the parasite were significantly higher in Family 2 than in Family 1. Our results demonstrate that prespawning oysters as young as 1 year-old can become infected with the parasite and, most importantly, can die from bonamiosis. This result is inconsistent with the commonly accepted critical age of 2 years-old for the disease development. Additionally, no clear relationship between shell length and level of infection was observed. We also review the different methods for infection of the European flat oyster O. edulis with B. ostreae under experimental conditions and their main results.
