Summary
The book closes by discussing the power of drama ‘s emotional impact in the later eighteenth century and considering why the plays that spurred this response no longer have the ability to move modern audiences. It concludes that because we do not share the social, political, and cultural context of earlier audiences, we cannot share their emotions or experience their response.
