Summary
SUMMARY
Reception of Gardane's Mission by Prince Abbas Mirza in Tauris, painted by Michel François Préaux, a member of the mission of General Gardane, Extraordinary Minister of France in Persia (1807–1809), is main subject of the paper. Based on the information of the mission members, we assume that this painting represents the second audience of General Gardane with the Prince: the French wear boots despite a strict rule of Qajars’ etiquette, prohibiting to appear in boots at a Fath-’Ali Shah's and his heir's audience. Obviously, being at war with Russia and wanting to reorganize his on European model, Abbas Mirza deviated from the etiquette for these French officers, – his army instructors. From this exceptional modification of the etiquette, we compare audiences given by Fath ‘Ali Shah to other European ambassadors during the years 1809–1825.
