It is difficult to generalise or extrapolate about housing costs between the 1950s and today, not least because there is little comparative data with which to work (the House Price Indexes issued by the Australian Bureau of Statistics have been kept only since 1989). An advertisement in the Argus in July 1950 listed a six-room brick villa with a 70-foot frontage for £5000 (‘Owners ready to sell vacant homes at auction’, the Argus, 24 July 1950, p. 7). On one set of measures, the growth in Sydney property prices was less than 3 per cent between 1880 and 1950 (it grew, on average, 9 per cent in the fifty years after 1955).
