Summary
Coming from outside Israel/Palestine are most notably the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), The Christian Peacemaking Team (CPT), The Christian Witness for Peace in Israel/Palestine, and The World Council of Churches (WCC). Other groups are: Women Peacemakers of the World, a project of Global Coalition for Peace, which sponsors Mother-to-Mother for Peace and Non Violence (a program that links mothers of different cultures, who support one another in bringing up their children in a nonviolent environment); Women Shaping Society (for non-child bearing age women); Young Women in Action (for young women from thirteen years of age and up). These are only a representative portion of a wide-ranging variety of secular and religious international peace groups involved in Israel/Palestine at this time.
The International Solidarity Movement is a secular peace group that comes out of Palestine itself, and is led by Palestinians. ISM is comprised of volunteers from all parts of the world, who are trained in Gandhian nonviolent techniques. They do many things, from assisting with the olive harvests, protecting homes about to be bulldozed, to standing in silent protest against the occupation and what they call the ‘Apartheid Wall’.
The Christian Peacemaking Team is, according to their brochure, a group dedicated to giving support to ‘…faith-based nonviolent alternatives in situations where lethal conflict is an immediate reality or is supported by public policy’. CPT began in 1984 when delegate Ron Sider spoke before the Mennonite World Conference in Strasbourg, France, challenging attendees to address the need for a nonviolent solution to the Palestinian/Israeli situation.
