Summary
Almost nothing is known about Susan Evance, including the dates of her birth and death. Since she was said to be young when her first book of poems appeared in 1808, we have arbitrarily placed her among those poets born twenty years earlier. Melancholy and despair were frequent themes in Romantic poetry; compare this sonnet with Keats’ “Ode on Melancholy” (p. x). “Mystic transports” may be a quotation from a sonnet on a similar theme by Charles Lloyd, which began “When witching evening wove her shadows dim” (1797).
