Summary

The daughter of a ducal secretary, Sophie Friederike Schubart published poems as early as 1791 in Schiller’s journal Thalia. In 1793 she married Ernst Carl Mereau, a law professor; the marriage was unhappy and ended in divorce in 1801. In Jena she met not only Schiller but the Schlegel circle, the center of German Romanticism; at the home of Caroline Schlegel she met Clemens Brentano in 1798 (see p. x), and married him in 1804. She died in childbed.
