Summary

The United States health care system is undergoing a rapid transformation to value-based care, and performance improvement is at the core of this transition. Effective performance improvement requires an advanced infrastructure of health information technology capable of delivering critical information to patients and providers at the point of care to facilitate shared decision making. Patient registries and interoperable electronic health records will be instrumental in achieving the overarching goal of managing the health of populations. As programs implemented by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and parallel efforts in the private sector continue to evolve, quality measurement and reporting will remain central to performance improvement efforts. Electronic health records play an essential role in successfully measuring, reporting, and achieving meaningful improvement in the quality of health care. The success of value-based care models in the United States is dependent upon the progress of performance improvement initiatives.
